The latest range of Kindle 4 Covers and Cases is growing day by day. Of course whenever a new ebook reader is released accessories need to be redesigned to fit. The 4th generation Kindles are so much smaller than their predecessors that old cases simply won't work.

Luckily some great cases have been released pretty much immediately, including the great neoprene sleeves from Built, and a new version of the lighted cover for the Kindle 4. Both the Kindle 4 and Kindle Touch are close enough in size that most covers designed for one will fit the other too, which takes some of the chore out of searching for one.

Why You Will Need a New Cover for the Kindle 4

Kindle 4 cases, covers and sleeves will all need to be a lot smaller than their previous incarnations. The latest model is around an inch shorter than the previous generation, so few old covers will fit the new model.

For sleeves and cases many will fit both the Kindle 4 and the Kindle Touch, however certain book style covers such as the lighted covers from Amazon will be tailor made for each one specifically so do double check before you buy.

As I anticipated (the rest of this article was written before we had even had a glimpse of the 4th generation Kindle)...

I know, I know, the specification for the Kindle 4 hasn't even been announced yet. In fact we don't even have a Kindle 4 release date. But you know it will come, and when it does you will most certainly want it.

The question is will you want a new case for it too? Well to be honest, it doesn't really matter whether you want one or not, the chances are pretty certain that you will need one.

This is because one of the biggest changes likely to occur when we eventually get a glimpse of the next generation of Amazon's ebook reader, is the introduction of touch-screen navigation. This opens up a whole world of possible changes. First of all, of course, that ugly old QWERTY keypad will have to go. But then what do you do with the extra space. You could remove it and simply reduce the overall size of the Kindle (and then none of your current cases will fit), or you could increase the screen size to fill all the available space at the front of the device. This would be cool for those of you clever enough to use your Kindle without a jacket attached, as simple sleeves might well still be workable. But anyone with a jacket knows there is always some fabric or leather attached across the front to frame both the display and the keypad. That would most definitely get in the way of your beautiful new bigger touch-screen!

See, I said you will need a new cover. In fact my guess is the only folks not bothering to buy a new Kindle 4 case will be those that enjoy the "naked" Kindle experience and never take their device out with them either!
