Kindle Fire Media Capabilities

If you're into watching films or TV shows on a mobile/tablet device then the Kindle Fire is a great choice. According to Amazon there are over 100,000 films and televisions shows including latest releases, available for download or rent from Amazon's media streaming service.

The Kindle Fire supports the following file formats if you are looking to use your own media. Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively, Audible (Audible Enhanced (AA, AAX)), DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, non-DRM AAC, MP3, MIDI, OGG, WAV, MP4, VP8.

The Kindle Fire also does well when it comes to music. It supports the usual formats such as MP3, allowing you up upload you own music collection to it, or to purchase from the several million tracks available from the Amazon music store. The clould service also allows you to store your music online and stream to your Kindle Fire when required.

Books. So this is the origins of the original Kindle, and the Kindle Fire also does not disappoint.

You can view all your ebooks, in the usual formats such as .mobi and, of course, you can download from a huge choice from the Kindle Store. Books and Comics look great on the colour screen and make for a great reading experience. In addition to books and comics, the Kindle Fire will also let you open other documents such as PDF files and Microsoft Word documents, for when you really must stop having fun and do some work!

Kindle Fire Online

As you would expect from a modern tablet device, the Kindle Fire gives you a great web browsing experience. The Amazon Silk browser is a fast, full featured browser that includes Adobe Flash support (so that you can fully enjoy flash based sites). The browser makes great use of the Kindle's dual core processor, along with cloud features, to give a fast browsing experience. You can find more of the technical details about Amazon Silk on the Amazon website.

In addition to web browsing, the Kindle Fire also includes an email client from which you can access the Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail and AOL webmail services. If you prefer though, you can of course download a different email application from the App Store.

The Techie Stuff

So, we've covered the functionality, but what about the hardware I hear you ask?

We'll, looking at the specs, once again the Kindle Fire doesnt disappoint. The most obvious point is that the screen offers a multitouch display with 1024x600 resolution, which makes your media look fantastic.

Weighing in at 14.6 ounces, it is comfortable to hold in one hand. The size means it is extremely portable. You will barely notice it in your bag or purse.

The Kindle Fire is a true mobile device. There is no real requirement to connect it to a desktop computer. It has 8GB of internal storage (with around 6GB available for use). This is enchanced by the availablity of cloud storage for your Amazon media content.

Connectivity: The Kindle Fire supports 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, which makes it versatile and suitable for connecting to Hotspots, Home or Enterprise wireless.

Battery life is great, with a full charge offering around 8 hours of usage. Fully recharging the battery takes only around four and a half hours.

So, Would you Buy a Kindle Fire?

We think that the Kindle Fire price makes it a great alternative to other, more expensive tablet devices. Android app support, makes the device a great option for people (or parents) that want to buy a tablet for themselves, or the kids without having the expense of buying something like the iPad 2.

Yes, I still prefer the iPad 2 (but then I like all Apple products) but the Kindle Fire offers a great, lower cost alternative. It compliments Amazon's online services, so is a fantasic device for consuming content. You get the feeling that the Kindle Fire isn't necessarily trying to compete with the iPad, but is offering an alternative and is a great option for people who may otherwise not take the plunge into the table market. If I found one in my Christmas stocking there certainly wouldn't be any complaints.
