I've read that the Kindle speech feature works on a phonetic recognition basis. It may be noted that the Amazon ads clearly state the Kindle reads text in English. This may change in the future.

Also apparently the software cannot read PDF files. It can, I have heard, read text documents that you have created yourself. This is all information to check out before purchasing your Kindle if it is specifically important to you. Sure to aid blind visually impaired persons.
