Tips, Tricks And Tools To Get The Most Out Of Your Kindle

I got my first Kindle for Christmas this year, and as expected, I immediately fell in love with it. I love to read and I'm a total computer & gadget geek, so how could I not love the Kindle? My Kindle and I have been inseparable for the last few weeks, and I expect this love affair to continue for a long time to come.

Since getting my Kindle, I've stumbled across a few tips, tricks and tools to help me love my Kindle even more (if that's possible).

I am creating this lens to share all the tips, tricks and tools I've learned about my Kindle so that others can enjoy their Kindle as much as I enjoy mine.

The Best Kindle Tool Ever!

The best Kindle tool, period is the Calibre ebook software. This software is totally awesome, and get this, it's free! Basically, Calibre is an ebook management program, which helps organize your ebook collection. But this software does so much more...

Why do you need Calibre? Well, if you want to read blogs on your Kindle without having to pay for them, if you want to read online magazines without paying for them, if you want to read your pdf files on your ebook reader without having to pay a fee for converting them to Kindle format, then you MUST get this software.

I don't know about you, but I have a ton of pdf files just sitting on my computer, many of which I've never read. Thanks to the Kindle and the Calibre software, I can transfer those pdf files to my ebook reader and take them with me wherever I go.

In addition to pdf files, the Calibre software allows me to fetch the rss feed for my favorite blogs and websites so I never miss an update!

This software is currently free, but they do ask for donations. This is my absolute favorite Kindle tool, so you can bet I'll be making a donation towards the maintenance and improvement of this software.

Collections Help Keep Your Kindle Books Organized

Did you know you can organize your Kindle books into collections? I had over a hundred books on my Kindle, and finding something was becoming increasingly more difficult the more books I added.

Recently I discovered that you can organize your books into categories (I'm assuming this feature was always available and I just didn't realize it until I stumbled across it one day, but I suppose it could have been added later).

Anyway, I have started organizing my books into various categories that I create. Right now I'm using broad categories like "business" or "romance" but as my collection of books grows, I may create even more specific categories like "personal finance" or "christian romance".

So now my books are organized and I'm a happy camper. I hope you find this tip helpful!

Kindle Tips and Tricks

The Kindle is much more than an e-book reader. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your Kindle:

  • Subscribe to magazines and newspapers for early delivery: If you sign up to receive subscriptions to print products on your Kindle, you'll often get access to them before they hit the newsstands.

  • Print screen: Make a screenshot by pressing Alt-Shift-G.

  • Improve the battery life by turning the wireless service off.

  • Kindle supports multiple formats: You can read .mobi, .prc, .txt, .jpg, .gif, HTML and Word files on the Kindle.

  • Need to skip more than one page? You can fast forward though pages by pressing and holding Alt plus the Next or Previous page keys.

  • Surf the web. You can find the Kindle's web browser under the "Experimental" section of the menu.

  • Send IMs: You can send instant messages with Yahoo! Messenger on the Kindle.

  • Increase or decrease the text size: The Kindle offers six different font sizes.

  • Get free file conversions: Email files to "name"@free.kindle.com to have them converted to a Kindle friendly format.

Have to agree with Joan4 below - adjusting the font is amazing (especially for us "just older" readers!). Good lens!

My favorite thing about my Kindle? Large font! Easy to read. I carry mine with me everywhere! Best electronic gift I have ever received. I enjoyed your tips, too!

There's a fantastic website that converts your kindle clippings into readable files, like Microsoft Word, Excel & PDF. It's called www.clippingsconverter.com. It's free too.

Kindle users will know that there’s a way to clip portions of the book they are reading for future reference. Those clippings get saved in “myclippings.txt” in the documents folder of your Kindle. Clippings converter is a simple tool that converts these clippings into Word, Excel or PDF files for better organization.

You’ll first need to get the myclippings file from your Kindle’s documents folder after connecting the device to your computer. Once you get that, you can upload that to the site and download it in your preferred format.
