Why This Non-Techie Person Loves her Amazon Kindle Wireless eBook Reading Device
Have you heard? The Amazon Kindle family recently announced THREE new models. First is the new Kindle (aka Kindle 4), smaller and lighter and only $79. Amazing! Next is the Kindle Touch, a touch-screen e-ink Kindle for only $99. Also amazing! Third, is the Kindle Fire, a Kindle tablet in living color and priced at only $199. Click here to see and order all three new Kindles. Did I say "Amazing"? Wow!
My personal reviews of the new Kindle models are ready! Continue reading this page for an overview and history of why I think the Amazon Kindle can't be beat. Then, to read my personal reviews, check out Which Kindle to Buy? Reviews from a Kindle Owner.
Lighter than a paperback, more powerful than WiFi, able to leap the library in a single, uh, click? - it's Kindle, the portable wireless reader from Amazon.
A Kindle is the perfect anytime gift for your favorite book lover, or for yourself. Kindle is simple to use, no computer required. Read your favorite books, newspapers, blogs, or even your own personal documents with Kindle - anywhere! What's more, there's no monthly fee and no contract required! I recently upgraded from the original Kindle to the Kindle 3 (now called the Kindle Keyboard) with 3G, wi-fi, and Special Offers. Daisy and Iove it!
Looking for a Kindle review? Read on for my take on Kindle, from my first look at the original Kindle, to the improvements of the Kindle 2, 3, and now K4 (the current generation), and even my impressions of the large screen Kindle DX.
What IS this world coming to? Looks like it's coming to Kindle. Read on. . .

What's So Special About the Amazon Kindle?
Find out why this non-techie gal who can barely turn on her cell phone fell in love with Kindle.
- The screen is not backlit, so the display is easy to read, even outdoors in the sun. The display, in fact, gives the illusion of reading from paper. No glare like you get from a computer screen.
- It's small, compact, and lightweight (the latest Kindle- aka Kindle 4 - weighs less than 6 ounces), smaller than most paperback books. The controls are set up for both right and left-handed users and are very simple and convenient.
- You can do everything, searches, purchases, and downloads, without a computer or even a hotspot - and without a service plan or monthly fee. Now, that's quite a selling point!
- The battery charge lasts for days. "Read War and Peace on a single charge," or so they said for the original Kindle. The Kindle 2 battery lasts 25% longer; turn off the wireless connection and read for two weeks without a charge!
- I like the cute little dog-ear bookmark feature. I like the adjustable text size, perfect for those of us who need reading glasses.
- It's interesting that everything you buy or download to your Kindle is backed up at amazon.com, so you can access it in the event that something happens to your reader.
- You can subscribe to newspapers or magazines with the new editions updated and delivered automatically. There's a built-in dictionary, as well as a word search feature, and a subscription to Wikipedia is included.
- The 3G Kindle and the Kindle DX each holds 3500 books, no memory card needed!
- The Amazon Kindle really is handy and non-cumbersome, light and easy to use, perfect for anyone on the go - or even just for convenience at home. For me, trying to handle a book comfortably while reading in bed can be difficult. The size, shape, and weight of the Kindle makes it a perfect solution.
- Did we mention that Kindle talks? Oh, yes. Text to speech, in a female voice or a male voice, your choice. The quality is quite good, too.

Meet Kindle DX, the Big Screen Kindle
The large screen of the 9.7-inch Kindle DX broadens wonderful new horizons for a wide range of users.
The Amazon Kindle DX, introduced on May 6, 2009, and updated on July 1, 2010, has a 9.7-inch screen (compared to Kindle 2's 6-inch screen). Weighing in at just 18.9 ounces, the DX has a capacity of 3500 books, periodicals, or documents. The larger screen is perfect for reading newspapers, PDF documents, and graphic-heavy books such as textbooks, but still perfect for everyday reading of any of the books in the Kindle store. Look for the special notation on Kindle book listings for volumes that are formatted especially for big-screen e-readers and the Kindle DX.
Read and see a comparison of Kindle and Kindle DX or use this link if you're already ready to order the new Graphite Kindle DX.
SAVE on Kindle DX!
If you're looking for a bargain and plan to use it only in the United States, consider a refurbished or used Kindle DX.

Why Would a Non-Techie Person Like Me Want a Kindle?
(or, Hey, how do you turn this thing on?)
I'll admit it, I can barely work my prepaid cell phone. So, why would a non-techie person like me want an Amazon Kindle? I can think of a few reasons . . . (Sweetie, are you listening?)- It's easier to handle than a big, cumbersome best-selling hardcover book.
- There's no monthly fee, no contract.
- I can take it on a trip or vacation with reading material all loaded up and ready to go. Then I can load it up with the book that my new friend on the plane was reading - and convinced me I should read, too.
- There's no computer required, no searching for a wifi "hotspot." That truly is portability.
- It's actually simple to use, to turn pages, to bookmark my spot or make notes or highlight selected text.
- The font size is adjustable. It'll adapt to whichever pair of glasses I'm wearing. (So, my eyes are middle aged. Yours will be, too, someday.)
- When traveling, I can have access to a daily newspaper without having to find a newsstand. For that matter, I can read my daily newspaper before I even get up out of bed. Now, that's convenience!
- And speaking of traveling, both the 6" Kindle and the Kindle DX now work and are available to be purchased in the U.S. and over 100 countries worldwide, including Canada!

Kindle 3G Unboxing
Wow, it really is small, but the screen is the same size as before. Nice!
Note that the latest Kindle (Kindle 4) is even smaller than the Kindle 3, very compact and easy to hold, while the screen size remains the same. Amazing!

Apple Meets Kindle, Introduced by Whispersync
What do we mean by synchronize? Let's say you're reading War and Peace on your Kindle and you stop at page 400 to run an errand. Say you're now standing in a long line at the post office with nothing to do but wait. You could read, but you forgot to bring your Kindle. (Don't you hate it when that happens?) Hold on! You have your iPhone with you (or your iPod Touch) and your i-device has the Amazon Kindle app. Open to War and Peace, page 400, and read on. Now, say you read to page 405, mailed your package, then hustled back home. You settle back into your comfy reading chair and pick up your Kindle to read again, open War and Peace and page 405 is waiting for you. Simply pick right up where you left off. Ah, the wonders of Kindle and Whispersync!
