Lots of facts and perspectives! I was confused between Nook Glowlight and Kindle Touch.

The Nook Glowlight has a backlight feature that can help you read from it in any situation. It also has a slot to extend the memory. But I just learnt that the Kindle 3G is free and also works in India, which is awesome! I might go for the Kindle if I decide to buy an e-reader :-)

the regular kindles are great for me, while the fire one not so much. Too powerful on one hand and not powerful enough on the other.

Any idea on when they will be expanding the library lending program to have more libraries participating? Sounds like a great option but it isn't available here...
  • Susan52 May 9, 2012 @ 3:06 pm | delete
I don't know if they'll expand to another platform that other libraries use. You might talk to your library to see if there's anything they can do from their end. Certainly Amazon wants to make every book available to every person, so they may be working on it, but I really couldn't say for sure.

I had used the iPad (first version) but it keeps breaking. I bought my mother the Kindle last year and she loves it. Now I'm thinking of buying one for myself. Sure sounds simpler than constantly taking the iPad into Apple for repair.

Several friends have been trying to get me on the Kindle bandwagon. Although I'm a major bookworm, I just love the feel of having an actual book in my hand. I admit, though, that having a Kindle would save me tons of space on my bookshelves.
  • FunMoneyBusiness Apr 20, 2012 @ 5:10 pm | delete
I bought my after moving countries and having to part with nearly all my books - we had a house with a library, so we had a few! It took no time at all to get used to it, now I prefer it - I was re-reading an old, heavy book recently and found I got annoyed with it's weight! I haven't finished it!
Get a Kindle, you'll not regret it! :)

Congratulations on LOTD. Can you add a section or a new lens on Prime Lending and the Kindle? As an author, I've noticed customers are confused about the one borrow per month, and that even if they have a prime membership they must download the ebook from the prime to the registered Kindle on the account or they can get charged if they download the book from another Kindle ap on the account.
Also, some customers aren't aware that Amazon has a seven day return policy if they accidently download an ebook they don't want. :)
I love how responsive the Kindle ap is for PC and just ordered the $139 Kindle (on sale now for a limited time) myself.
    Thanks for a great article.
  • Susan52 Jan 3, 2012 @ 9:21 am | delete
LisaGrace, that's a great idea - and you gave a great explanation about how Prime Lending works. Thanks so much, and best to you in the new year!

I have never used a Kindle and have only seen one once so my views on them are not based on experience. I love reading real books so I have no intention of ever getting one, but I can see the benefits in having one if you travel a lot for extended periods of time.

Many congratulations on LOTD as this is such a great lens and a pleasure to read.

I don't have a Kindle (yet!) because I'm just an old-fashioned gal and still love the feel and smell of a real book. Mind you, having said that, I can't wait for the Kindle Fire to be available across the Pond (Ireland to be precise) then I might just have to change my mind!

I used to be such an avid advocate for printed books (books are supposed to get you away from the electronic devices, right?), well that was until I met my Kindle - a gift from a family member. I'm completely hooked, and now even got my not-so-frequent-reader husband pulling all-nighters (and leaving me wondering what I'm supposed to do).

Great lens, very informative! I personally love my Kindle. As someone with perpetually achy wrists, I have trouble holding large books. Before getting the Kindle, I had to choose my reading material based on weight, whereas now I can read whatever I want. I'm working my way through the free classics at the moment. :) The Kindle is also fantastic for visually impaired people, because of the ability to adjust the type size. Large print books are difficult to find, and usually very heavy. I love that the Kindle enables more people to enjoy reading.

Congratulations on LOTD! I have had my Sony Reader for three years and it is still going strong. I think the Kindle is fine, except I can read MS Word documents on my Sony and as a writer that is very helpful. Yea, Kindle, but I'll keep my Sony. Plus for me all I want to do is read, I have an Ipod Touch for games and other items. Still this is a great lens. Very thorough.

  • John_Michael Dec 28, 2011 @ 9:04 am | delete
great lens, good work. I do have a question: How do you get an author personally inscribed/autographed book on it?

Good question! For that you'll need a paper book and an author to sign it. Well worth the space on a "real" bookshelf in many cases, too. Store it safely there, then buy the ebook version to read!

I am planning on getting a Kindle next year. My son has one and he loves it. I am not sure which one I will be getting so I was happy to read about the different versions here. Still not sure. Leaning toward the 3G, though.

My sister's boss just gifted a Kindle to my sister and she hasn't stopped talking the Kindle up ever since. I just know that this Christmas she'll pretty much summarize this entire lens back to me whether I want her to or not, lol.

LOL Hooray for your sister! Truly, that's what happens when you have the opportunity to try Kindle. It's hard to stop talking about it!

Very helpful lens. Interesting tidbit I didn't know: that you can borrow Kindle books from libraries!
  • Susan52 Dec 14, 2011 @ 9:08 am | delete
Flicker, isn't that a great feature? Now, not all libraries are on the system needed to be able to participate in the Kindle lending program, but a huge number are on it. Happily, mine is and I hope yours is, too!

Susan, I had to plug in your lens to my Guide to Most Lovely and Unique Christmas gifts! :) There is still a lot of confusion over which Kindle to buy, and I think your lens is extremely helpful in getting a practical, hands-on comparison of these best-selling devices.

This is a fantastic lens! I never knew that you could borrow Kindle books from libraries! Also, I have used the Kindle DX and although it's not too heavy, it's no longer a one-handed device so I say stick with the original size.
  • TopToysForKids Dec 5, 2011 @ 10:23 pm | delete
The Kindle Fire is a wonderful entry level reader...but, it's much more! This wins in my book over a much more expensive iPad. Nice lens my friend.

The first thing I do when I get out of bed in the morning is to make a pot of coffee. The second thing I do is to read Seth Godin's blog. I think it is sooo cool that he linked to you in his blog! I haven't yet gotten a Kindle, but plan to do so. Kudos on this terrific lens!
  • Susan52 Dec 14, 2011 @ 9:10 am | delete

I bought my Kindle in 2008, so I'm still using the first version. I love it! I don't have to lug books with me anymore, and it's great having the (free) wireless when we go camping or other places. It's probably the best techie investment I've made, next to my Mac desktop. Great lens!
  • shaunkowalewski Dec 3, 2011 @ 10:17 pm | delete
I have a Kindle, and I found a lot about it that I did not know. I don't use my kindle as much as I used to. Maybe I'm getting tired of reading but hey great lens. I learned a lot about the kindle and I own one!!

Great lens on the Kindle. I really do like them a lot. My only problem is they left out the 3G option out of the Kindle Fire, otherwise it would be on my Christmas wish list. What is up with the slow implementation of 3G/4G on these new tablets??? It seems like iPad is the only real option for this :(
  • apcreates Dec 2, 2011 @ 7:33 pm | delete

  • Mozaika Nov 30, 2011 @ 9:43 pm | delete
Susan, you've got that right!!! I completely agree with your choice of a Kindle! My husband IS a techie, {big time}, so we have all (yes, I wrote "all") Kindle tablets available, as well as Nook Color. The reason? Well, first off, the guy loves gadgets :). However, there's more to it. He has fallen in love with his Kindle DX so much that he's started formatting the books for Kindle himself, adding a lot of unique useful features (like the DVJ navigation) in order to have the best e-books in use. After having tried all Kindle tablets (plus Nook) our verdict is same as yours - Kindle Keyboard 3G is a winner overall! I must note that the keyboard itself is a crucial part of it. While Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch are great android tablets, Kindle Keyboard is the best e-reader, due to its versatility and capability to be used with serious material like dictionaries, Bibles and larger books.
  • GreenGables Dec 3, 2011 @ 6:13 pm | delete
I, too, prefer Kindle Keyboard over newer ones. Kindle Fire is a super fun android tablet, and I use it a lot for movies on the go and other apps, but as a reader it is not that good, Kindle Touch is ok, but since the screen is no e-ink, I returned it. I read a lot, so e-ink is a must for me!
  • CaliforniaLaw101 Nov 30, 2011 @ 4:30 pm | delete
You know that you can install the Android Kindle App on a NookColor and have the best of both worlds?
  • Susan52 Nov 30, 2011 @ 8:48 pm | delete
    Cool! But no e-ink. :)
  • GreenGables Dec 3, 2011 @ 6:15 pm | delete
Yes, Susan, indeed! E-ink is definitely a must for an e-reader. I had Nook Color for a while but traded it for Kindle Keyboard 3G, and I can't be happier!

I am planning to buy a kindle.Do you think I will comfortable with the digitalbook? I am in my late 40s and have to wear a reading glass.
Don't you feel any eye strain??
  • Susan52 Nov 22, 2011 @ 11:17 am | delete
Hi Banyantree! The beauty of the e-ink screen is that it actually feels like you're reading on paper. It's much different from reading on a computer or on a shiny, lighted screen. I have never had a moment of problem with eyestrain with either of my Kindles and I have horrible vision. You may even be able to increase the text size so that you can read without your reading glasses if you prefer. If you get one, do let me know how it works out for you. Thanks for the comment and the question!

How reliable is the 79 Kindle? Thinking of giving one to my 12yo as she's a voracious reader.

    The leather acase looks NICE!
  • Susan52 Nov 22, 2011 @ 8:55 am | delete
David, my (adult) son has the $79 Kindle and is very, very pleased with it. In fact, he likes it better than my Kindle 3 since all he does is read on it. All the Kindles have a limited one-year warranty, so if there's a problem early on, Amazon will take care of it. I think the $79 Kindle and a case would be a fabulous investment for a 12-year-old voracious reader. Hope she enjoys it!

  • Susan52 Nov 18, 2011 @ 8:11 am | delete
Davies86, I'm not sure about the price difference but my guess would be that it might have to do with the 3G provider there. Click on the Kindle link above and look for the "Discussions" tab there. Bet you can find an answer from others in the UK who are in the know!

Thankyou, happy reading!

I think I want one, but am not sure it will work since I do not have cell phone service.Do you know?
  • Susan52 Nov 7, 2011 @ 7:47 am | delete
The great thing about Kindle is that you don't need cell phone service, you don't even need a computer! You do, however, need to be in an area that has cell phone service so if you live in the middle of some undiscovered wilderness, you might have to use a computer to download books. Otherwise, you should be good. Now, that said, some of the Kindle models (currently the $79 model) use only WiFi (and not 3G/cell phone service) to send your downloads. We have a wireless network in our house, so the new Kindle works fine for us. If you don't have it, you'd have to go somewhere where there is wi-fi service (i.e. Starbucks or McDonald's or any AT&T Hotspot) to get your books, or use the included USB cable from your computer. There are no Kindle fees for any of those. Hope that helps!
  • RinchenChodron Nov 7, 2011 @ 10:19 am | delete
Very helpful - they also seem to be a phone or to receive text messages but I might be wrong on that? Thanks

Thanks for the very informative lens.

I'm so glad I ran across your page! I've heard of Kindle, but I've been wondering just how good it is and what it's really all about. Now I am convinced that I have just got to have one. It's really nice to know that free 3G is included with no monthly fee and no contract required. Thanks for sharing all of the info you have put on this page. When I get ready to purchase one, I'll be sure to get it here. From 333ideas @ www.squidoo.com/anything-to-save-a-buck

I only recently purchased my wireless 3G Kindle and would not be without it. It exceeded my expectations. I also invested in the leather cover with light; so happy that I did. I take my Kindle everywhere. Great Lens!

The Kindle Fire is the true iPad killer. It has more CONTENT than Apple and Android combined! Jobs wanted to nuke Android, but Amazon was nipping in the back tablet door whilst Jobs was fighting Android! Jobs will be turning in his grave...a third tablet rival rises :)

Just love this lens and how you have organized this. Of course, I love the Kindle. Before the Kindle, we used to bring suitcases of books when we go for work in other countries. With the Kindle, we can download the latest books as well. We will move to Kindle Fire as clicking can be disturbing to others.

Lens is great, no doubt. But I hate these kind of devices Kindle, iPad etc. Book is book, nothing can change or replace the real book.

Probably one of the best lenses, period. After I write this comment, I'm heading over to your blog, 'I Squidoo Do You.'

I actually have a question. I want to buy the new iPad in January, so I can't decide if I should just get the Kindle app for that? I like the idea of the regular size Kindle but do I want two separate devices?

    Thanks, dee
  • Susan52 Sep 16, 2011 @ 9:02 am | delete
Oh, Dee, you ask difficult questions! I'll throw one more possibility into your equation. It is likely that there will be an Amazon/Kindle (no one knows the name) tablet out in November. You might want to check that out when it's released and compare features. That said, if you read a lot you might be much happier with the easy-on-the-eyes e-ink Kindle rather than the glare-in-your-eyes iPad. Since you can get a Kindle now for as low as $114, you might just spring for two devices. It's a tough decision, that's for sure. Let me know what you end up with! (And thanks so much for your very kind compliment!)
  • WorkitSmart Sep 16, 2011 @ 8:39 pm | delete
    Thanks for detailed response!

I want the iPad so I don't have to lug around my laptop on trips.. plus I LOVE to read. Just bought Vaynerchuk's new book and thought that it was one I really would have liked saved to a Kindle.

Anyway!! If I buy two devices, I always have the issue of deciding which one to take with me. But you did point out important factor I was not aware of: The iPad has the glare.

Hmm. well when I decide, I'll come back and purchase thru your link. Thanks for the great info.

    dee :)

This is a fantastically jam-packed page on the Kindle device: every little piece of information I found myself looking for was there. The snippet about Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing was very useful indeed!

The Kindle itself is a great device. Your recommendation for the 3G model is spot on! Who wouldn't want the freedom of having books wherever cellphone reception is available?

    Rock on!

Sorry if this has been asked. I have kindle software on my iPad. However, I would rather have a Kindle reader. Will all of my books from the iPad automatically be available on the Kindle.. I imagine they will be, but I want to make sure.
  • Susan52 Sep 9, 2011 @ 8:23 am | delete
Yes! Kindle's slogan is "Buy once, read everywhere." Kindle even synchs your reading across devices, which means that if you read a few pages on your iPad then open the same book on your Kindle, it'll open where you left off on the iPad (unless you've set it not to do that, in case you're sharing the book between people on the two devices). Hope you enjoy your new Kindle!

I´m getting more and more convinced to give Kindle a try... though must admit I love my books, the touch, the smell, the experience of closing the last page!
  • raesreviews Sep 6, 2011 @ 5:23 pm | delete
That was my biggest reason for not getting a Kindle at first. I love books too and was afraid I would miss them too much. However, the convenience of Kindle is pretty easy to get used to. Plus, so far, none of my Kindle books have had missing pages. Nothing drives me crazier than reading along and suddenly realizing I just jumped 5 pages in the last page turn. I will actually stop reading when it happens and find a copy that has the pages I need before I finish the book. Maybe this doesn't bother you as much as it does me, or maybe you make sure all the pages are there before you start a book. Whichever the case may be, I just wanted to share something about my experience that you might find helpful. Happy reading!

One of the best things about owning a kindle is the GREAT customer service. The screen on mine gave out a few days ago, and they shipped it to me for free in two days. Incredibly relieved that I have my kindle back, and the process to get it back was absolutely painless.

I have my Kindle, and love it! It's so small and lightweight that I actually thought the pictures of people holding it in their hands were faked somehow...maybe with models with especially large hands or something. The pictures aren't faked though, they really are that small. Also, this lens is very nicely done...great work! Thanks for all the information. I have had my kindle for several months, and I learned something new here...more than one something actually.

The screen on the Kindle is so easy on the eyes. I wish I could have a computer screen like the Kindle so my eyes won't hurt after looking at a computer screen all day. Has anybody heard of such a thing?
  • Susan52 Aug 31, 2011 @ 5:32 pm | delete
I haven't heard of such a thing, but I agree that it would be nice. Maybe when there's a good source of color e-ink screens, someone will put one in a computer monitor. Great idea!

Great lens on the Kindle! I don't own one, for various business reasons, I opted for the iPad. With that said, the readability of the Kindle, especially outdoors in the sunlight, is amazing and far superior to that of the iPad.

YES for Kindle! We got ours in 2009, and it's been THE reader since. My husband loves gadgets, so we've had (or have) Sony Reader, Nook Color, iPad, Motorola Xoom (hmm, now I see where all our money goes...), but Kindle is still the favorite. Some people argue that one can read books on iPad or other tablets, but I have to say that NOTHING comes close to Kindle when it comes to the easy and comfort of reading. And, YES, it is well worth to invest in the Lighted Kindle Cover for those middle of the night reading spells! :)

    Great article, Susan!

An amazing job on this lens! I think you've covered every thing a non-techie would want to know about the Kindle... my father in law loves His, I would get one too, but I usually only read technical books and like to highlight/bookmark/underline... so I still prefer an actual book for those, now reading for fun, if only I had the time... that only happens when I'm at an all-inclusive in Mexico :)

OK, I hear you all. But..... being a paranoid person, I chose an e-reader for myself that doesn't connect automatically via WiFi or 3G. I don't like the idea that Amazon can take the book back if they want. And they have done this in the past. They recalled one of George Orwell's books off of everybody's Kindle, and credited their accounts. They did this because of some or other distribution rights dispute. So I have an e-reader that I connect to my PC to get my books onto it. I get the books from the E-Book Store via the internet and ensure that the can't be "taken back". My books are precious and frankly, once I've bought them, I consider them mine.

I purchased the very first edition kindle for my boyfriend and I to share. I was added to the waiting list and I had to wait about a month for it to ship. When I surprised my boyfriend with it, he was completely shocked, I think I even saw a little tear in his eye! We have had the same kindle for about 3 years now (I think), and it is still in perfect condition! I love books, but it is just so nice not having to lug them around all the time! This is a great lens! I'm definitely going to have to get a t-shirt now! :-)

I'm planning to get a Kindle for myself as a birthday present! I live in Guatemala, so finding books in English is a challenge and gets expensive very quickly. Now I'm just trying to decide if I should get the simple version or the 3G . . .

    Hi Susan,

Great post and congratulations on doing so well in the rankings. It is good to see there are other Kindle lovers out there, that cares enough to share their experiences. I have had mine for a while now and just adore it! I've created my own little review on the kindle on Squidoo if you want to check it out.

    Thanks again for sharing,

I just bought me a Kindke with wi-fi only. But i can't get it to pick up wireless to use it. I did buy two books for my kindle but did the down load to my computer then into my kindle.
I read some where all you need it to do is connect one time, don't know if true or not. But im going to go around town by the banks and where i think it my get the connection and see.
    Great lens though.
  • Susan52 Apr 13, 2011 @ 5:31 pm | delete
Sounds like you need to find a McDonald's or Starbucks! For people who have wi-fi networks at home, the wi-fi version of Kindle is a great choice. I don't have wi-fi, so I'd have to go with the 3G. Currently, I have the original Kindle, so I'm used to receiving my books "magically" through the air. Love the convenience!

  • Bella_Stella Apr 5, 2011 @ 9:14 am | delete
The Kidle might be convenient to most of the readers but I am still stuck on the traditional books in which I can smell the paper... I think that they bring me closer to the text and its ideas. However, for blogs and online texts like journals etc, of course it is a really useful device and I would prefer it rather than a notebook.
I like the information of your lens! Good job.

I was thinking about buying a Kindle... but then I also considered an iPad. It's a tough decision - I don't NEED an iPad (I want one) but I do need an eBook reader. Suggestions?
  • Susan52 Jan 28, 2011 @ 7:56 am | delete
I wouldn't mind having an iPad either, though I really haven't been able to justify the cost (or a subscription fee). If you primarily want a device for reading, the Kindle 3G just can't be beat. I'd recommend the 3G unless you're absolutely sure you will always be in range of wi-fi. If you're more in the market for a device to surf the web, then the iPad would be a better choice. Bibliophiles, though, choose Kindle!
  • HiatusBath Jan 27, 2011 @ 9:25 am | delete
My husband got me a Kindle for my birthday. I love it! It's great to travel with and just sit around reading with. I really love that you can find thousands of free books for it. I've had it for 4 months now and have yet to pay for a book. It's coming, I know but I'm putting it off as long as I can.
  • Susan52 Jan 28, 2011 @ 7:59 am | delete
I have lots of freebies on my Kindle, too. Recently, though, I bought three Kindle copies of a particular bestseller - one for me, one each for my two sons. Sometimes it's really worth it to spend money, but no problem with taking advantage of generous publishers!

OK this is a lens i like to see ...even if it was created to sell something
you cover a lot of aspects of the product so if someone is interested to buy it you could easily convince him You didn't just put the basic modules only to publish it..it is not a cheap amateur awful look like lens like hundreds i ve seen in squidoo.....( i object with the idea of making a lens only to sell something just putting together 3 or 4 modules full of affiliate links and nothing else )
. Squidliked because if i was interested in buying kindle i would do it gladly from your lens

I didn't know you could have content on the Kindle before receiving it. That is a cool way to build a reading list kinda like having a que on Netflix. Congrats on making the Top 100 lenses!

Susan with all the new readers out - do you still recommend the Kindle as superior?
  • Susan52 Jan 7, 2011 @ 8:02 am | delete
Hi Kat. Yes, I still recommend Kindle - and so does Consumer Reports - for those who want a dedicated reading device. The iPad is more of a computer than a reader, and it's hard to read on with the backlit screen, so they're really in different categories. The Nook Color is getting great reviews and would be a wonderful choice if you favor magazines or colorful children's books. For bibliophiles in general, though, you just really can't beat Kindle. Thanks for asking!
  • katskloset Jan 7, 2011 @ 12:59 pm | delete
