New Kindle
Kindle 4 Reader
The Kindle 4 is available today. For a crazy low price which seems frankly amazing.
The most popular of the new Kindle options is certainly the option with no keyboard. This works simply by using the buttons on the side to navigate between pages. It has the same screen size as the previous model but it is much lighter and smaller as the keyboard is virtual, if you need to use it.
This option will actually fit into your pocket, so it is perfect for taking with you almost everywhere. But this is only the beginning of what is now available, as we shall see.

Amazon Kindle 4 Specs
The New Amazon Kindle Touch 3G or Wi-Fi
The Kindle 4 specs are different for the different models. We have the cheap Kindle 4 which is now available as we have just seen. And this is the one I personally own. And it is simply a brilliant device, and amazingly light too.The first release may be a little smaller but it is amazing value. No keyboard just simple navigation buttons which is really all that we need.
The Kindle touch comes in two forms. A Kindle 3G or a Kindle wi-fi and 3G. Both touch screen. We touch the left to go back a page and we touch the right to move a page forward.
And if we touch the middle we get the navigation menu.
Plus we get the Kindle color option which is a full tablet but without the usual hefty price tag.

What Do You Want From The Kindle 4?
Only thing I would ever want different is a change to the text to speech as the voice is very "automatic" and hard to listen to for long periods of time. Agree with Mike - speech to text was very useful. No speakers or earphone port on cheapest K. I want text to speech and more disabled features, especially so that it can be usable by the blind. That's a real deal breaker here if it doesn't have text to speech and things like that so blind people can use it. I agree the speech to text function of the existing Kindle takes it to many more people and uses. The cheapest version doesn't have speakers or earphone port. I totally agree about the Text to Speech function being a deal breaker. It is great to listen to while traveling in my car or while making dinner. It's a must have function that only the Kindle 3, Kindle Dx and Pandigital Novel offer. i realy want to know, is the new kidle fire's screen realy as plain as they say it is? can you cange your wallper, or maybee evn the color? (: Question for anybody in the know out there....I am in the States soon, if I buy a Kindle WIFI whilst there, (much cheaper anyway),can I use it in the UK and will downloading/WIFI connections work ok? yes all you will have to check is the charger, make sure it will work in 240 volt, usually they work for 110-240 for travel purposes. Otherwise yes you just set it up for your wifi system when you get home. Did you get any reply.I have just bought one and have the same question I'd be interesting in finding out if the colour kindly (kindle fire) can be used in the UK also. Hi, can you still transfer Mobi format books from your pc to the new Kindle 4?
Thanks Yes, I did it today on the Kindle 4.0 - no software needed; just operating system file copy to USB device :) Absolutely. My wife just bought one, and the first thing I did was transfer the .mobi book she was currently reading on her "old" Kindle plus the same-name file that tells where she was reading. She opened her book to exactly the same place. It's GREAT! Where is the keyboard on new Kindle? Do you have to buy it seperately? For the touch it just pops up on the screen. The cheap model has either buttons for page turning or a virtual keyboard can be made to pop up. Or you can buy the Kindle 3 which is the old model and still has a keyboard. Keyboard appears on the screen and you use the keys at the bottom to toggle between characters. I thought it would be "clunky," but it's actually pretty quick. Without a media card reader I will NEVER buy a Kindle. That is simply a deal breaker. why? This Kindle has about 1.4GB of storage, which will hold over a thousand books. Keep 'em on your PC and transfer to the Kindle when you're planning to read them. I've been doing that for years with the original Kindle. I don't want that many books on my Kindle, because paging through them would take FOREVER! So how do they make US$79 into GBP 89 ???? GBP$89 is for the kindle without offers (US$109). Kindle with offers US$79 only for US, as well as all others. I know, that sucks!!! And 110 euro in Ireland!!!! really like my kindle 3 and the only extra thing i would like on it is a screen back light so you can read at night / in poor light without having to carry a light source around with you . Even thinner and lighter. Improved battery life, higher screen resolutiona at the same size. Better and faster web browser. I think both color and touch can become more expensive the product, then color would be good to read magazines and would fit well into the 9-inch screen, and touch would be good for zooming and would fit well into the 6-inch screen, and this could replace the 9-inch to read pdfs. Now if the price is very good with both features, so be it! Now talking about my object of desire: essentially to read both books and PDFs and Web surfing (I read much in internet, LCD screen is awful). Eink screen. Screen good enough to read, using a consistent size or using the touch feature for ease of use of the zoom (read pdfs). I accept navigate using only the wireless, no problem. Lightweight. Durable battery. Color does not matter much, but color graphics on the origin must be clearly visualized in shades of gray. I will have a chance?? ..(smile) I would like to have a color display for sure. I hope it will be available in the next version of Kindle. There are lots of guestures both by Amazon and manufacturers of the Kindle display, which shows that they are serious about the color display.
But when it coems to the touch screen, I do not think I will need one. I am happy with the buttons for the time being.
http://www.squidoo.com/kindle-user color & touch screen. can i download and read italain books Oh yeah, I'm wouldn't be so optimistic that Amazon will be coming out with a new Kindle e-reader, specially a color one. That is because it's now known that Amazin is coming out with a table if their own. Read about it here: http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/02/amazon-kindle-tablet/
I would doubt that Amazon would want to put out a color e-reader at the sme time is launching it's new tablet.
But I would nit be surprised if they do come out with a higher resolution, may be even a touch screen, gray scale e-ink e-reader. That is to compete against te new Google e-ink reader (the Iriver Story HD). Which by the way, has much better resolution (much higher then any other e-ink reader on the market) and higher contrast settings then the current Kindle. And it's also priced at the Kinlde's price range. Hmm, may be that is why Amazon as lowered the price of their current e-ink reader. That and to make room for the new one...I hope!
Here is part of what Google says about it's E ink reader: "With the Story HD you can now browse, buy and read Google eBooks with your e-reader through Wi-Fi, rather than downloading and transferring them from computer to e-reader with a cord as you can already do with more than 80 compatible devices.
We built the Google eBooks platform to be open to all publishers, retailers and manufacturers. Manufacturers like iriver can use Google Books APIs and services to connect their devices to the full Google eBooks catalog for out-of-the-box access to a complete ebookstore. You can also store your personal ebooks library in the cloud—picking up where you left off in any ebook you’re reading as you move from laptop to smartphone to e-reader to tablet."
I wonder if being open to all manufactures, publishes, etc., means that you can buy books and use e-books meant to be used with the Kindle, Nook, or any other reader. Because if it does, then that would beat the pants off the competition.
I think that there needs to be a standard format of e-book file fir all e-readers, and you should be able to buy your e-book files from whoever you want or has the lowest price. In the same way you can chose where to buy a paper book from. @ang3lsCursr, relax there! You are getting too excited about a simple device. Everyone knows, except for you, that it is NOT supposed to resemble a tablet. If you read pretty much every review about the Kindle 4, it's often stated that it's only an e-reader. That's all, nothing more and nothing less.
For me, I love the idea of being able to highlight text and give it different colors. I do that with my paper books. Difference colors means different things to me based on importance. And I other reasons for wanting a color e-ink e-reader.
Many reviews keep bringing the point up, that a color e-ink e-reader would be great for periodical such as magazines. I can totally see the benefit in that.
So relax, it's OK, it's not the end of the world! Lol I can also see the benefit in reading a science or technical book with color charts or diagrams in them. Sorry for being a bit late there is actually a Colour E-ink e-reader shown at CES by Hanvon. But don't expect to use it like a tablet. What are you talking about Kindle 4 being in colour? Having a touch-screen? Kindle is an E-READER not a tablet computer. There is no colour E-reader close to being developed, unless you’re talking about the shell? The only colour “e-readers” are not e-readers because they use LCD Displays when an e-reader uses electronic ink. E-readers have high resolution physical pixels not coloured light emitting pixels. The results would be bad for your eyes, poor battery life and not for reading books. These features you describe are for tablet computers. If you want the features you are discussing buy a tablet. If there will be a colour e-reader you will hear about it long before Amazon will have one because a major electronics company that specialise in displays will announce it. Not an amazon Kindle. I love my kindle. I can read books. If I want colour and touchscreen and run applications I'll by a tablet, but for now I make do with my smart phone as I don't care for running apps. The only tablets I am interested in are ones running Windows 8 as it'll be the same operating system for desktops, smartphones, tablets etc. I don’t want to buy poorly written, overpriced applications for a phone or that can't even handle it. You be disappointed if you’re thinking you’re going to watch movies and flick about a touch screen on an amazon Kindle. You won’t be able to, and if you could it would be a tablet which is not what a Kindle is. Acer, Apple, Archos, Dell, HTC, Samsung, Sony, just to name a few, all make tablets.
My conclusions are to buy an e-reader for reading books and don’t buy a tablet unless you really will make use of it or are so rich it doesn’t matter if you wasted your money. Buy an ipad if you run a Macintosh on your workstation. Wait for windows 8 if you run windows on your workstation. Preferably just wait either way for OLED to mature and be equipped to a tablet with “Full HD” on apple and windows 8 tablets. I like my Kindle 3 just as it is. If I wanted a color touch screen I would have bought a tablet. I like not having to charge the Kindle every night. I like being able to read it outside. The only improvement I can think of would be a military spec Kindle - a G-Shock Kindle. Waterproof, impact resistant, etc. SPANICH TEXT TO SPEECH ... Please I want page numbers , it should be always in the same place in text (like in regular book) Color would be awesome, but only if its eink. I want to see things in the sunlight and have good battery life and a booklight easily cures seeing in the dark. and as other users said. better organization, and while I rarely use the browser, its limitation to not open separate windows is pretty limiting, I would be happy if those links could be overridden and be told to just open in the same window. i want the software to be like the latest Kindle Android app. I don't want a touchscreen. i have always sweeten hands, and the screen would become ditry soon :-( . Please non -touchscreen is ok.
I want color. I like National geographic, but i don't like to buy it printed because ina year is A LOOOOOT of paper, it weights and takes space, but once i buy it i don't wanna throw it ( even if recycle) after a month... i would like to read it anytime. That's why i wnat a coulor screen, to see my favouriute national geographic photos.
I bought a kindle 3, 6" are enough for books, and 9.7" without color are useless. I would like color to read my favourite comics too. Ok for manga (black and white) but what about my marvel comics? 1. Faster page turns, 2. NOt as flimsy as kindle-3. 3. tuch screen. why colorful? black-and-white e-inki is good to be ebook machine. At least a release date- please No color screen! Everyone that voted "color screen" is ignorant and misguided. If I purchase a reader it's because I want it to be a reader. If I wanted something with a color screen I would get a tablet. A back-lit color screen is harder on the eyes and difficult to read in bright light such as outside. Again, a e-reader should be simply that, an e-book reader. Put a color screen on there and it's no longer an e-reader, but rather some crazy bastard child of an e-book reader and a tablet, and functions as neither very well. Clearly, you are of the opinion the only genuinely practical purpose of an ereader is for the reading of black and white text, and that any technical books covering fields such as computer graphics, for instance, or mathematics or scientific texts and journals, which also benefit greatly from color presentation, should be published strictly in print, and not utilize in an ereader format.
This is the 21st century. Join it. Apparently - insider rumors are that there are multiple tech companies who have been working on color "e-ink" displays - so no backlighting, no LCD screen (LG is one such company). The drawback might be that it is limited to 4096 colors - at least at first.
Amazon is also rumored to be entering the tablet market, so they will want to get their "reader" functionally separate from any tablet they produce - so hopefully no useless "cross-breeding" creations ;) i think the color will still be electronic ink, NOT a backlit lcd. Not sure about color, a nice touch but not really a must. Anyway, if it came, it shoudn´t be LCD, e-ink is surely refreshing to the eye! What I would really like is better screen refresh, better navigation on the browser and pdf´s (similar to opera mobile, better refreshment will render this mostly unnecesary) and a way to personalize the screensaver w/o jailbreaking. Not much really, most of this can be done with a system update.
A better control for mp3 and maybe a pop-up panel would be the icing on the cake A faster colortouchscreen, V8 engine, some build-in adult toys ;-) Built in microwave oven, lightsaber and helicopter landing pad. That would make it ! They better release it soon or I'm just going to go buy a Nook. Where is "None of the Above?" I vote for that. No color, absolutely no touchscreen. What I want most is a better way of organizing my Kindle content. Oh I so agree... I absolutely hate the (lack of) organization on the Kindle!!!!! I had voted for touchscreen, but better organization would have been my first choice also!! I want a touchscreen and the ability to check out books from the library. I hope no touchscreen (or allow it to be turned off!) I utilize a speed reading technique that involves sliding my finger along the text. Touchscreen doesn't work so well! What do I really want? Release iiiiiit!!!!! The amazon idea of e-book reader is great but what I am missing a lot is a touch screen. Pls do one :) Other thing i don't like much when you go throw application the screen get funny, and have got this "effect blink " pls correct that as well and I will be the happiest owner of the amazing AMAZON KINDLE :) Many thanks Hierarchical Organization please. I really don't care about any additions /except/ being able to better organize my content. Collections are like a spare tire, it'll get you home but it's not what you should be driving around on. Model the organization structure just like an mp3 player. Browse by author, browse by genre, browse by series, browse by keyword/tag. This is basic stuff that should have been available from the start. Totally agree, JUstin. Don't need color, don't EVER want a touchscreen, but must have better organization of my ever-increasing Kindle content. Those post-it notes are beginning to bulge out of the pocket flap of my Kindle cover. Yes yes yes...what he said!!!!! To all those worrying about color being implemented through LCDs, color e-ink already exists, in the new revision, E-ink Triton. Havon has already demonstrated a device using the new e-ink, so it's likely Amazon will follow suit with the Kindle 4. touch screen
and also support chinese is enougth
yeah , shall be easy to make notes and marks~
:) flash support
touch screen
color display without backlight Touch screen would work, but keep the black and white e-ink please! I would like a color display. But I DONT want it to be LCD. The e-ink is kindle's biggest plus. If they compromise that, they're just like those other non-memorable tablet makers. I would change the colour of the casing to make it more personalized, quite fancy it in pink. if you want color display and touch screen, why not just go for iPad!? Quite. If Amazon ever compromise on the quality of the display for reading, it'll be the end of the Kindle as a competitive device What I'm looking for is GESTURES!! A touch screen that only recognizes taps & touches is a limited interface these days. A Kindle color would frankly be a mistake. The technology behind color e-ink isn't ready (the colors are all dim and pale) so the only alternative would be to dump e-ink and go to a conventional LCD screen. And there you've lost the primary advantage of an eReader, it would just become another iPad knock-off.
What would be a distinct improvement would be an eink touch-screen. If only to keep up with the Nook. I am after a colour and touch screen, I also like to have the full screen - is there someway that the keyboard can be hidden ie can this come up on the screen on request - rather than being on the device and holding this for the duration of reading and only needing it when you want to download? I am also after the ability to share books with nominated other kindle holders in my family - would this be possible? looking foward to when kindle 4 is released...advance notice greatly appreciated....regards, jenny barton431@bigpond.com Both color and touch screen is likely to decrease display quality. For color, they need to cramp many more pixels for red, green and blue. That could decrease sharpness. And touch screen usualy means less contrast because. Sorry, but whoever wishes these features from an ebook reader is more likely a flashy/fancy gadget lover rather than a serious reader. If all you ever do with your K is to ‘read’ then you are right about being a gadget lover. However I for one want to use the K (4?) for field work (I read dead trees for pleasure); it needs to hold field and identification guides and these need to be in colour to be properly useful. I will not be getting one until then. Current high resolution LCD displays *FAR* exceed DPI capabilities of e-ink.
E-ink wins hands down on issues of contrast though, particularly in daylight lit areas such as outside or near a window with the sun shining in.
Touch screen wouldn't have to impact image clarity at all, depending on which technology is employed.
What i want is a reader that I can read letter-sized documents in at full size, without having to pan or zoom. Scientific papers and articles are often formatted for such presentation, and the ability to view them as they were originally published is advantageous. God... number keys... if I'm adding notes with numbers in it's a huge pita to jump out to the nav panel and manually select the numbers. Custom characters yes, but numbers? Perhaps a scroll touch button like the blackberry to help navigate would help this too - I use conscious though of price - one or the other would really enhance the K3 for me... You can use (alt) + (top row or letters) to also type numbers, still slightly annoying, but way easier than the menu. There's a load of speculation about the Kindle 4, but really not much is known. KindleBar.com has a good round-up of all the latest information: http://kindlebar.com/2011/07/24/kindle-4-news-round-up/ Option to borrow books from friends. I would want the touch screen and be able to make notes as I am reading. Not a fan of colour. All i want is a color screen.
I hate touchscreen anything so the kindle is the perfect e reader for me. lcd screen would be cool but i dont really care about color lcd i just want a good e reader with bigger improvements from kindle 3 A backlit display with higher resolution. I don't really care about the grayscale or the touchscreen - I simply want to be able to read anywhere at any time. color screen, that seems better Yeah but i want to just read in the long term so lcd screen would be uncomfortable for us if we wanted to read in the long term 1. Able to read EPUB
2. Better browser
3. Better at reading PDF I don't see how they could introduce color without lowering contrast.
Higher resolution would be nice. Color eInk would be nice but I doubt it's economical at this point in time. Color LCDs aren't that good for long term reading. Add support for EPUB format. Add a memory expansion slot. Maybe add a touch screen if it's thoroughly debugged but keep the nav buttons as is to keep the grease off the screen. A designed replaceable lithium battery would be nice, too. Where was the "none of the above"? I want a reader, not another distraction. Go buy any of the other various tablet computers if you want that. The only thing I want from Kindle 4 is faster programing and better pdf scaling. I still want it to be a kindle. Count my vote for "none of the above" on your Kindle Poll better annotation tools, dictionary has vocabulary builder, dictionary show entry on a single page, shows original paper book page number, Non-English language support, printout of clips, bibliography support. IN ORDER of importance: Color. Touch. Memory expandable. Replaceable battery. no backlighting, its a reader, this is why tablets arnt good ereading device, backlghting = headaches etc etc. removable Battery, device last no longer than its battery, touch, color to some degree, better web browsing with or without video ability Additional memory, an improved web browser, 4G connectivity to better support the web browser, better pricing for an improved DX model, the ability to use removal storage media; easy access keys for the audio book feature, an improved PDF browser and an optional color feature which can be turned off to allow for the same great BW reading experence. When will there be an ebook that actually has two panels (like a book) and is as sharp as printed text? THEN it will take off. Color & the ability to read .cbr/.cbz colour I'd like to see the ablility to replace the battery, just in case. An SD slot would be nice, as well as being able to choose your own screen savers. I have K3G and I don't see anything wrong with it. I like that it's not touch screen, because I get enough of that with my phone and other electronics. (I also hate grubby fingerprints!) I like how the Kindle is keeping it basic. I enjoy that it is not backlit (that's what steered me away from nookCOLOR.) I have been able to read books quickly with no eye strain whatsoever. I think it would be nice to have color though, (or at least the option for it) for children's books. I have a younger brother and I would like to read books with him. (That's why I was thinking of nookCOLOR in the first place.) I can't think of really anything else because otherwise I'm completely satisfied with my K3G. It should have a touchscreen with the option of locking it, so you can either use the touchscreen or not. Also, a color screen would be a great addition. waterproof, shockproof, image compatibility for text book graphs/illustrations w/highlighting and note taking options. NO touch screen please, love current layout, indifferent to color- steer clear of lcds! built-in adjustable (intensity/positioning) light similar to that in the lit case would be cool.
