A Quick Kindle Comparison

Amazon has several different choices now meaning that a Kindle comparison may be needed to make the decision on which Kindle is right for you. The Amazon website does a great job of giving a quick comparison between the different Kindle options available. However, I would also like to expand on this, explain some of the pros and cons, and hopefully help you better decide which one really is best for you.

A Quick Look at the Different Kindle Options

Listed below are the six different Kindles that Amazon is offering. It is great that they are offer so many different choices, but some of the Kindles look just alike, and it can be a bit hard to decide which one is just right for your purposes. Hopefully, we can cut through all the confusion and set you up with the right Kindle by offering a good Kindle comparison.

Amazon Kindle Fire

The Kindle Tablet

The Amazon Kindle Fire is Amazon's competition to the Apple iPad. The Kindle Fire is a sleek looking device that is more than just an ereader. Otherwise known as the Kindle tablet, it shows that Amazon is willing to step outside the pure ereader experience and provide customers with more functionality that many of them crave.

The Amazon Kindle Fire has a color touch screen which means you can now watch movies and view pictures on your Kindle device. Also, it is wonderful for children who still read picture books as the pictures are now in color. Of course, this would not be an ideal device for small children who would be left unsupervised with the Kindle, but it is great for those times in the waiting room and such.

If you have an Amazon Prime account then you can also watch over 10,000 movies and tv shows that Amazon has available for streaming on their website. Don't have an Amazon Prime account? You can get an Amazon Prime account free trial. Also, if you are a mom or a student then please check out the links provided as you may be eligible to get a free Amazon Prime account.

The other thing I like about the Kindle Fire is that you can now read magazines that are in color. The Amazon website has offered Kindle magazines in the past, however, their were not particularly fun to read on the black and white screen. If you are someone who wants to read lots of graphic rich magazines then this device is a good choice for you.

This Kindle would also be good for students who are wanting to purchase Kindle textbooks for their Kindle device. Many textbooks have graphs, pictures, and charts that look better on a color screen.

Who might enjoy the Kindle Fire?
If you are someone who wants a tablet, something more than an ereader, something where you can watch movies, where you can view your pictures, where you can have your children read children books with pictures, look at college textbooks, or read magazines then this device is a good choice for you. The Kindle Fire will give you the needed features with the color screen, apps, movies, magazines, textbooks, etc. so that you can get the best possible Kindle experience.

Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Keyboard 3G

The Amazon Kindle Keyboard comes in a Wi-Fi only version as well as a 3G version. They are of course the same device except for one can only connect to the internet when it is in a WiFi area while the other can use 3G to connect pretty much anywhere their is a 3G signal.

These devices are what many Amazon Kindle users are used to. If you own a Kindle 3 then you own this Kindle pretty much. I do not see any difference and so far the Amazon people haven't mentioned any.

For those who aren't familiar with the Kindle 3 I will explain a little more about it and what it has to offer. The Kindle 3 or Kindle Keyboard as it is now known, has an E-Ink display which means it is in black in white. It is an ereader which means its primary purpose is to allow you to read books (as well as magazines and blogs to a certain extent).

E-Ink technology is wonderful because unlike a tablet screen, it won't give you the eye strain often caused by staring at a computer screen. Instead, reading on this Kindle is like reading an actual book. Your eyes won't start to hurt after a little while. This E-Ink technology means you don't have to worry about glare from the sun or from a light which is nice if you want to be able to read on your Kindle Keyboard in the park or anywhere else outdoors.

The Kindle Keyboard also of course has a keyboard which comes in handy if you want to make notes in your books. You can type out a not in a particular section of a book and these can easily be printed out on your computer. My keyboard has come in handy on my Kindle on many occasions.

The battery life on he Kindle Keyboard is of course going to be a lot better than the Kindle Fire because it doesn't have that battery hogging color screen. However, it all depends on what you are wanting in a Kindle device.

Who might enjoy the Kindle Keyboard or Kindle Keyboard 3G?
If you are someone who wants just an ereader to read books on then this is a good device for you. Also, if you want to be taking notes on your Kindle while reading then the keyboard will come in handy. If you don't want to touch your screen or if you are sensitive to seeing fingerprints on your screen when you are trying to read then the Kindle Keyboard is the best choice for when comparing Kindle devices.

Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G

Kindle with Touch Screen

The Kindle Touch comes with a Wi-Fi only and 3G model like the Kindle Keyboard. The Kindle Touch has a touch screen without a keyboard for those who would prefer to just swipe or touch the screen instead of using a keyboard below the screen.

You can use the touch screen to swipe pages in a book, take notes, and shop for a new book.

I don't see any other major differences besides the lack of keyboard which is replaced by the touch screen. Also, it does have a metallic silver body as opposed to the white or black of the Kindle Keyboard.

Who might enjoy the Amazon Kindle Touch?
Some people prefer to have a touch screen on all their electronic devices. The Kindle Touch would be perfect for them. For those who have trouble with arthritis or pushing the small buttons on the Kindle Keyboard, this would also be a good option as well.

The Basic Kindle

The Amazon Kindle is the basic Kindle model without a lot of the extra bells and whistles. It doesn't have the keyboard or the touchscreen. Instead, you use a small 5-way controller at the bottom of the device. It is also Wi-Fi only, however, it is their cheapest Kindle.

It also has a body that looks metallic silver. There are also two buttons on either side of the 5-way controller at the bottom. In all this is the most basic of teh Kindle devices.

Who would enjoy this Kindle?
People who are wanting a basic e-reader without anything extra would enjoy this e-reader. This person probably doesn't want a touch screen and doesn't feel they would need a keyboard. Instead, this person just wants to be able to read books quickly and easily on one simple device. The basic Amazon Kindle is perfect for them then.

Which Kindle do you prefer and why?

What is missing in this compartison is the big screen Kindle DX. With its 9,7" (24,5 cm) it is much better for reading documents with diagrams and potentially a better bet for students or professionals looking for a device for reading technical documentation. One drawback are that it is too big for your pocket (or handbag), another is that it too only has a monochrome screen.

Thanks for clarifications - looking to get an e-reader for my grand daughter. Like the idea of the FIRE as she can grow/study with it as she enters Hight School. I wonder....should I just get an iPad? She can get books on that device too, and it's so much more......Why stop at Kindle?

The difference between the two is going to be on what you want and how much you are willing to spend. While the Kindle Fire is currently $199, the iPad starts at $499 and goes up from there. Both products I believe are great. However, it really is going to depend on what features you want and whether you feel it is justified enough for the higher price of the iPad.

THANK YOU! This succinct and straight-forward comparison was very helpful to me. Too many choices can be overwhelming, especially since I do not know anyone who has a Kindle device for firsthand input.

Great lens topic. I got a nook color and my hubby jailbroke it for me to do a similar function as the Kindle Fire and my mother loves it for playing games. However, the Android programs crash constantly. Once she is done with her Nook I am getting her a Kindle Fire.
