Prince Charles - King in waiting

Destined to become King Charles III, Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne was 60 on 14 November 2008. In January 2008 Charles became the world's longest serving heir apparent, passing the record of 59 years and 73 days previously held by King Edward VII, when he succeeded his mother Queen Victoria.

Sources close to the Prince said he is not impatient to replace his mother, Queen Elizabeth, on the throne.

"Charles realised long ago that he would spend most of his life as heir, not as king," a former aide told The Sunday Times. "His is a family marked by longevity and his mother is in good health. He has made the most of it. He has enjoyed more freedom (than if he had been king) and achieved a tremendous amount in terms of charity and public life."

Charles' record comes after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her great-great-grandmother Victoria as Britain's oldest serving monarch late in 2007.

So who is the oldest Heir in the world?

Prince Charles biographer, Anthony Holden, explains that Prince Charles "descends over and over again from Charlemagne and Frederick Barbarossa and all the great dynasties, Hapsburg and Hohenstaufen, Guleph and Hohenzollern, Bavaria, and Saxony, Hesse and Baden ... in Italy, his forefathers include the Dukes of Savoy and the Emperor Frederick II ... and the medieval Kings of Sicily, as also the Orsini of Rome (Pope Nicholas III was his ancestral uncle)... in Spain, they include Ferdinand and Isabella ... and thus El Cid himself. The Prince's Anglo-Saxon and Danish royal forefathers sprang from Dark Age kings who incarnated the storm-spirit Woden (after whom Wednesday is named), and among his pagan Celtic royal forefathers were King Niall of the Nine Hostages and the Dynamic Iron Age sacral kings of Tara, the great sanctuary of ancient Ireland.

Through the Lusignan crusader kings of Cyprus, titular kings of Jerusalem, Prince Charles descends a millennium further back from king Tiridates the Great, the first Christian monarch of all (under whom Armenia was converted in AD 314, before even Rome itself), and thus from the divine Parthian Imperial House of Arsaces (247 BC), which reigned over Persia and Babylonia and was in its time the mightiest dynasty in the Ancient World."

Prince Charles is the first born son of Elizabeth and Philip

Prince Charles is only four years old when his mother becomes Queen

The Prince of Wales, eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born at Buckingham Palace at 9.14pm on 14th November 1948. A proclamation was posted on the Palace railings just before midnight, announcing that Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth had been safely delivered of a son. It was announced later that the baby Prince weighed 7lb 6oz.

On 15th December, Charles Philip Arthur George was christened in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace, by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Geoffrey Fisher. The Prince's mother was proclaimed Queen Elizabeth II just over three years later, at the age of 25, when her father, King George VI, died aged 56 on 6th February 1952. On The Queen's accession to the throne, Prince Charles - as the Sovereign's eldest son - became heir apparent at the age of three.

Under a charter of King Edward III in 1337, the Prince, as Heir to The Throne, took on the traditional titles of The Duke of Cornwall and, in Scotland, The Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.

Royal Wedding and Divorce!

Prince Charles' marriage to Diana was not a happy one

On 29th July 1981, The Prince of Wales married Lady Diana Spencer (born 1 July 1961, died 31 August 1997) in St Paul's Cathedral. The Prince and Princess of Wales had two sons: Prince William, born on 21st June 1982 and Prince Harry, born on 15th September 1984.

On 9th December 1992, the British Prime Minister, John Major, announced to a stunned Parliament that The Prince and Princess of Wales had agreed to separate. Rumours that the couple were unhappy had been spreading for quite some time. The marriage was dissolved on 28th August, 1996. The Princess was still regarded as a member of the Royal Family and retained the title Diana, Princess of Wales. However, she no longer held the title Her Royal Highness (HRH).

Prince Charles' sons

Prince William and Prince Harry

Prince William was born at 9.03pm on 21st June 1982, weighing 7lb 1 ½ oz. He is second in line to the British throne.

Following his early years school, William attended Eton College from July 1995. After a gap year in which he visited Chile, Belize, worked on British dairy farms and visited countries in Africa, Prince William chose to study at St Andrews University in Fife, Scotland. He graduated with a degree in Geography in 2005.

After a period of work experience, Prince William joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as an Officer Cadet. He was commissioned as an army officer in front of Her Majesty The Queen at Sandhurst in December 2006 and joined the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals) as a Second Lieutenant.

Due to his position as second in line to the British throne he will not be allowed to undertake active service, both to ensure as much as possible his personal safety, but also those who will be serving with him. His position in British society would make him a sought after target.

Prince Harry is the younger son of The Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales.
He was born at 4.20pm on 15th September, 1984 weighing 6lb 14oz. He is third in line to the British throne, but will move further down the line if Prince William has children.

Harry's education followed the same path as his older brother and he attended Eton College from September 1998 where he took his GCSEs and A Levels. After completing his A Levels, Prince Harry took a gap year during which he visited Australia, Argentina and Africa, where he made a documentary about the plight of orphans in Lesotho.

Prince Harry entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in May 2005. He completed a 44-week training course as an Officer Cadet, before being commissioned in April 2006 as a Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals).

Originally it was decided that as with his older brother, he would not be allowed to undertake active service. It is believed that the Prince was extremely upset about this decision, which was revoked and in February 2008, Harry completed more than two months service with the British Army in Afghanistan.

The prince, known as Lieutenant Wales, served as Forward Air Controller from December last year until February of this year at Garmsir and Musa Qaleh. But the planned four-month tour of duty was cut short after 10 weeks when a media blackout broke down, forcing him to return home. As Prince Harry served more than the minimum one month in a theatre of war, he qualified for a campaign medal and was the first Royal to serve in a war zone, since his Uncle, Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, who flew helicopters in The Falklands Conflict in 1982.

Harry's Commanding Officer said: "The way it came out was a bit disappointing, especially because he had to leave. It doubled up the workload that we had and every time we had a major operation we had to get someone to replace him. A lot of people were disappointed about it, that he did have to go. He was just one of the lads."

The Death of Diana

Prince Charles went to France to escort the body home

When The Princess was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31st August 1997, Charles flew to Paris with Diana's two sisters to bring her body back to London. On the day of the funeral, The Prince of Wales accompanied his two sons, aged 15 and 12 at the time, as they walked behind the coffin from St James Palace, where the coffin had lain in state, to Westminster Abbey. With them were The Duke of Edinburgh and The Princess' brother, Earl Spencer.

The Prince of Wales asked the media to respect his sons' privacy, to allow them to lead a normal school life. In the following years, Princes William and Harry, who are second and third in line to the throne, accompanied their father on a limited number of official engagements in the UK and abroad. However, it must have been very difficult to shield Diana's sons from all the constant speculation, published in the British media as to the cause of their mother's death. The long awaited Coroner's Inquest concluded in April 2008 that Diana had been unlawfully killed by the driver and the following paparazzi.

A statement by Prince William and Prince Harry - 7th April 2008

We should like to thank the members of the Jury at the Inquests into the deaths of our mother and Dodi Al Fayed for the thorough way in which they have considered the evidence. We agree with their verdicts, and are both hugely grateful to each and every one of them for the forbearance they have shown in accepting such significant disruption to their lives over the past six months.

Both of us are much indebted to the Coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, for his unfailing courtesy, and for all the consideration shown by him and his staff not only to us but to all those involved in this hearing. We are particularly grateful to Trevor Rees, and to others who came forward to give evidence - in many cases reawakening their painful and personal memories.

Finally, the two of us would like to express our most profound gratitude to all those who fought so desperately to save our mother's life on that tragic night.

On 17 November 2005 the BBC reported:

Prince Charles is to stop playing polo, Clarence House has said. The prince has played polo for 40 years, but only in charity matches since 1992.

A spokesman from Clarence House said the prince had recently decided it was the right time to retire "gracefully, but regretfully".

Prior to 1992, the prince played for competitive teams, and has raised more than £12m while playing in charity matches since.

The prince, who celebrated his 57th birthday on Monday, broke his right arm badly in a fall during a polo match in 1990, which required lengthy treatment. He suffered a fall again in a charity match in 2001 when he fell awkwardly from his horse and fell briefly unconscious, but was not injured. The prince also fell from his horse earlier in 2005.

The Prince of Wales has passed his enthusiasm for the sport to his sons William and Harry, who are both known to be keen players.

Camilla - The Duchess of Corwall

Prince Charles' second wife

Adapted from: Wikipedia

Camilla Parker Bowles, nee Shand (born on 17 July 1947) became Charles' second wife on 9 April 2005. The relationship between Camilla and Charles began when they met at a polo match in 1970. Camilla was seen by royal courtiers as an unsuitable match for the future king. Robert Lacey wrote in his 2002 book: Royal: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II that Charles had met Camilla too early, and that he had not asked her to wait for him when he went overseas for military duties in 1972.

Camilla married, Andrew Parker Bowles and they had two children. She emerged into the public eye when it was revealed during the idiomatically dubbed War of the Waleses that it was she who was the third person in the marriage that Diana referred to in a TV interview by Martin Bashir.

Following his divorce from the highly popular Diana, Charles' household worked on Camilla's public relations, and she gradually became a part of royal life.Charles attempted to make his relationship with Camilla more public and accepted, having her become his unofficial, occasional companion at events.

This "coming out" temporarily ceased at the time of the Princess of Wales' death in 1997, but Camilla and Charles were photographed in public together in 1999, following a birthday party. This was regarded as a sign that the relationship was now official, a feeling that was further enhanced when Camilla met the Queen in June 2000.

Camilla then moved into Charles' household in 2003, but marriage between the couple remained elusive. As the future Supreme Governor of the Church of England, the prospect of Charles marrying a divorceé, and one with whom he had conducted a relationship, was seen as controversial. Opinion - of both the public and the church - shifted, though, to a point where civil marriage was seen as an agreeable solution.

On 10 February 2005, it was announced that Camilla and the Prince of Wales were engaged; Camilla was presented with an engagement ring that had belonged to Charles' Grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

The marriage was to have been on 8 April 2005, but on 4 April it was announced that the ceremony would be delayed by one day to allow the Prince of Wales to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II.

As Charles' parents did not attend the marriage ceremony (the Queen's reluctance to attend arising from her position as Supreme Governor of the Church of England), neither did Camilla's. Instead Charles and Camilla's children, acted as witnesses of the union. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh did, however, attend the service of blessing, in St George's Chapel, Windsor and held a reception for the newlyweds at Windsor Castle, afterwards.

Following the wedding, the couple travelled to the Prince's country home in Scotland, Birkhall, and carried out their first public duties as a couple during their honeymoon.

Article about Prince Charles

By Andrew Roberts for the Daily Telegraph

Shortly before the Prince of Wales's landmark 60th birthday, the historian Andrew Roberts said the heir to the throne, far from being an interfering eccentric, has always been ahead of his time.

Extract from an article that appeared in the Daily Telegraph on 22 October 2008

It's a far calmer and more serene Prince of Wales who contemplates his 60th birthday than the one who turned 50. The circumstances of the death of Diana the previous year were still raw, and the world seemed an unforgiving and hostile place, both for him and his then mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles. The prospect loomed of that most dangerous concept for any constitutional monarchy: an unpopular King. Things could hardly be more different today.

Those close to the Prince say that the sudden furious rages that would sometimes overcome him - reminiscent of his grandfather King George VI's famous 'gnashes' or 'veiners' - are rarely seen nowadays, an unmistakable sign of his new-found calm.

With his grandfather it was always the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother who would be able to douse the flames of the King-Emperor's fury, and with the Prince it is the Duchess of Cornwall who exercises precisely the same relaxed but engaged, loving but rational influence.

The Prince has been in love with the Duchess of Cornwall since the late autumn of 1972, 36 years ago, an important fact that the story of his first marriage slightly obscures, and it is generally recognised that, without her, these past 10 years might have been severely disorientating for him.

Adopting the traditional royal consort's role of staying a dutiful two steps behind her husband, never giving interviews and not trying to create a separate power-presence, the Duchess has dumbfounded those critics who thought she would be a gaffe-prone liability.

In fact, as well as bringing humour and a sense of fun to Clarence House, she has been a hugely stabilising influence on the Prince, as the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have recognised implicitly in public and explicitly in private. Her easy and mutually affectionate step-motherhood of Princes William and Harry has also confounded sceptics.

Prince Charles - The Environmentalist

Prince Charles is passionate about the environment

Much of this text comes from a speech made to The Women's International Media Group Inc by Joan Veon

In a 1988 speech at a European Environment Conference, the Prince said, "There is a growing realisation that we are not separate from Nature, a subconscious feeling that we need to restore a feeling of harmony with Nature and a proper sense of respect and awe for the great mystery of the natural order of the Universe...We are beginning to realise that whatever we do to Nature-whether it is on the grandest scale or just in our own gardens-is ultimately something that we are doing to our own deepest selves."

Interesting enough, it was in the early 1970s that the United Nations adopted the environment as its "mantra". Known as the "green prince" or "Eco-King," from his first speech on the environment given at the Countryside Conference in 1970, to his global push for sustainable development, the environment is key-key to changing society, how we live, where we live, and lastly, our value.

Do All The Good You Can

Most people will not find Prince Charles or his environmental activities reported in headlines of the major newspapers. For example, as a means of pushing the radical United Nations environmental agenda to the forefront of the world's attention, Prince Charles held a two-day international seminar in April, 1991 aboard the royal yacht Britannia moored off the coast of Brazil. Among others, he invited [then] Senator Albert Gore, senior officials from the World Bank, chief executives from companies such as Shell and British Petroleum, the principal non-governmental organizations, European politicians, including the British ministers of Overseas Aid and the Environment." If Prince Charles is only a prince in title and heredity, supposedly without any power, why did he host a pre-conference of great magnitude to set the tone for the United Nations Rio "Earth Summit," which was held over a year later? Why did he not attend the conference with great fanfare, revealing his part?

It should be noted that Vice President Al Gore and Prince Charles have a common mentor, now-deceased oil industrialist Armand Hammer, who was god-father to Charles' firstborn son, Prince William. The top environmentalists in the United States and United Kingdom are Al Gore and Prince Charles. It should also be noted that the former Prime Minister of the UK, Tony Blair, is a friend of Prince Charles and supports his environmental positions.

The Trust's first year was funded with HRH's severance pay from the Navy - £7,400 (approx $15,000).

The Trust has become the UK's leading youth charity, offering a range of opportunities including training, personal development, business start up support, mentoring and advice.

Pierce Brosnan is an Ambassador for The Prince's Trust and says: "The Prince's Trust is not afraid to take risks, and trusts in young people who society have given up on."

On 12th November 2008, the Prince Charles' mother, the Queen, visited the Prince's Trust HQ, with his father Prince Philip, and said:

As we celebrate the many extraordinary achievements of the Prince's Trust today, so too I should like briefly to reflect on the role of The Prince of Wales who has given enduring inspiration to it. In public life, highlighting the success of individuals can be a hazardous and invidious occupation.

But as The Prince of Wales, our son, approaches his own sixtieth birthday, may I say that we are both enormously proud to have been reminded here today of his personal contribution to this remarkable organisation.

Royal aides act to avoid scandal

20 January 2009

Sir Fred Goodwin, Disgraced head of the UK's Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is being axed as the head of Prince Charles' personal charity, The Prince's Trust. Known as "Fred the Shred" due to his ruthless cost cutting, royal aides are anxious to distance the Prince from the scandal surrounding RBS. Sir Fred was dismissed by the RBS in 2008 after leading the bank to ruin. The UK Government kept the bank afloat by buying shares with taxpayers money.

Frequently described as arrogant Sir Fred had previously insisted to his friends that his work with the charity would continue. But royal advisers insisted he had to go to avoid tarnishing the Trust's good reputation.

Prince Charles's spokesman confirmed that Sir Fred, 50, was leaving. A royal source said:
"Sir Fred's position has become untenable. The Prince initially decided to stick by him - but that's become impossible. The bank is in such dire straits Prince Charles had no option but to part company with him, and quickly. It is out of the question for a business charity to have as its figurehead and role model a man who's caused such economic damage."

An RBS insider said:
"Losing the Prince's Trust will be huge, humbling blow. He revelled in being Charles' favourite banker."

Is Prince Charles a racist?

Racist accusations January 2009

Adapted from a report in the Daily Mail on 14 January 2009.

Splashed all over the papers was a story that an Indian polo-playing friend of the Prince of Wales and his sons is known to them as 'Sooty'. The friend is multi-millionaire businessman Kuldip Singh Dhillon, who plays polo with the Princes Charles, William and Harry at Cirencester Park Polo Club close to Highgrove, Charles's Gloucestershire home.

According to members of the polo club, Mr Dhillon has been 'affectionately' known as Sooty 'for as long as anyone can remember'. When news of the stories of the press reached him Kuldip issued a statement, denying the Heir to the British throne is in any way a racist:

I have to say that you know you have arrived when you acquire a nickname. I enjoy being called Sooty by my friends who I am sure universally use the name as a term of affection with no offence meant or felt. The Prince of Wales is a man of zero prejudice and both his sons have always been most respectful.

Kuldip, who uses the name Kolin socially, is described by friends as 'genial' and 'utterly charming'. He has known Prince Charles for more than 20 years.

One member of the polo club said:

To be honest when I first joined I was rather taken back - particularly as Kolin was, how can I put it, our only black face - but it was a nickname he used personally so I, along with many others, thought there was no harm whatsoever in it. Kolin is certainly happy with the moniker [nickname] and, to be honest, it rather amuses us. It has become something of a running joke at the expense of the politically correct brigade. A sort of "two fingers" to the PC mob.'

Princes William and Harry and are particularly good friends with Mr Dhillon's youngest son, Satnam, a professional polo player who keeps a string of ponies in his father's stables. A friend said:

I remember being at a tea there in, gosh, the late 1990s at which Charles was present. When it was time for him to go he stood up and said loudly, "I must just go and say goodbye to Sooty". No-one even blinked.

Prince Charles office at Clarence House declined to comment on what they described as a 'private nickname allegedly used at a private club' but a source said:

To imply that any of the princes are racist is ridiculous.

Soil Association awards

The Prince of Wales presents awards to British caterers who serve British meat

20 February 2009

The Prince of Wales presented Food for Life Catering Mark awards to leading caterers at the UK's Nottingham City Hospital.

The Food for Life Catering Mark is an accreditation scheme that provides a step-by-step route to sustainable catering. The Mark has three tiers: bronze, silver and gold, with the gold standard requiring the caterer's menu to be 75% freshly prepared, 50% local and 30% organic.

The scheme grew out of the Soil Association's work with school dinners, and the Catering Mark was originally intended for third party suppliers of food to schools. However, the scheme has now been expanded to include caterers from nurseries, hospitals and sports stadia.

During a speech delivered at the Food for Life Partnership Awards Ceremony in December 2008, The Prince of Wales said:
Now we are beginning to make progress with healthy eating in schools, we need to tackle how we feed patients in our hospitals. As we are what we eat, and we know that the food we eat makes a difference to our health even when we are not ill, it would seem sensible that the food patients are given, helps rather than hinders, the process of recovery. So we need to encourage hospitals to maximise nutritional benefits by sourcing locally, seasonally and, where possible, organically.

In the wake of Jamie Oliver's call for the UK all to choose higher welfare British pork, this new award scheme from the The Soil Association - the Food for Life Catering Mark - is helping British caterers reassure their customers that the meat they serve exceeds British welfare standards.

Explaining the importance of the Mark, Joanna Lewis, Policy Manager at the Soil Association said:
The Food for Life Catering Mark has been launched in response to public concern about the implications of 'cheap food' for health, animal welfare and the environment. It gives caterers across the public and private sectors a way of proving their commitment to the freshly prepared, ethically sourced food that customers are asking for.

When eating out, people want reassurance that their food, and their children's food, is fresh, honest and additive-free. They want to know that the issues they care about, from animal welfare to climate change, have been taken care of.

The Soil Association's Food for Life Catering Mark helps leading caterers give their customers that reassurance.

Prince Charles to write new book

"Harmony" is planned for 2010

In a Press Release timed to coincide with Earth Day on 22 April 2009 publisher Harper Collins has announced that Prince Charles is to emulate Al Gore by releasing a book and documentary. The Publisher said:

"The Prince's practical, accessible narrative on how each of us can make a difference to ensure our children's future, and the survival of our planet, is of utmost importance today".

Planned for 2010, the project which is named "Harmony" will explore the effect of big corporations on the environment. A picture book version for children is to be published in 2011. All royalties will be donated to the cause and the Prince will collaborate on the project with Tony Juniper, former director of Friends of the Earth, who is Prince Charles' special adviser on The Prince of Wales' Rainforest Project.

The Prince's "Harmony" project will highlight how relentless human industry and consumption has dangerously effected the planet. Charles will argue that the world's pursuit of economic growth and technology has become "dangerously disconnected" from nature.

Prince Charles said

"I believe that true 'sustainability' depends fundamentally upon us shifting our perception and widening our focus, so that we understand, again, that we have a sacred duty of stewardship of the natural order of things. In some of our actions we now behave as if we were 'masters of Nature' and, in others, as mere bystanders. If we could rediscover that sense of harmony; that sense of being a part of, rather than apart from Nature, we would perhaps be less likely to see the world as some sort of gigantic production system, capable of ever-increasing outputs for our benefit - at no cost."

Charles added that society needed to rediscover a sense of harmony, of being a part of nature.

Our family didn't come over on the Mayflower on my mother's side (Dunton), we are daughters of England, we don't drink our tea with milk and it is very possible I am the lineage of the true Queen of England, what Prince Charles couldn't find when he came over to the states and married Di, at that time my mother was living, so it would have been her he was suppose to marry. I think its hillarious that after the boston tea party our family records were hidden so well by the government to insure separation from England that Charles couldn't locate us In Las Vegas, Nevada or my cousins if still living in Massachussettes. I am also english on my father's side (Blake). Helen C. Hafen P.O. Box 363905 North Las Vegas, Nevada 89036-7905
