steve irwin

liverpool 1st team

Steven Irwin is a versatile Academy graduate who was promoted to Melwood in July 2008.

The midfielder cum defender has made great strides since featuring as a substitute against Manchester United in the 2006 Youth Cup final.

He captained the under-18s in 2007-08 before joining up with Gary Ablett at Melwood.

Irwin is a player with a bit of everything: nice touch, a fierce tackle and great leadership qualities.

Academy manager John Owens said: "Steven is very versatile. His all-round ability means he can play in just about any position - and he has done. Central midfield is probably his best position, but his reading of the game allows him to adapt."

the new lfc stadium

stanley park

PREPARATORY works on Liverpool FC's new stadium on Stanley Park have started, the club's American owners said last night.

Tom Hicks and George Gillett announced the development on the club's website - their first joint statement of the year, and a possible sign of the thawing of tensions between the pair.

The club said that contractors Laing O'Rourke had been instructed to start enabling works under a licence granted by Liverpool City Council, and that works had started on Monday.

The stadium will incorporate a club shop, conference and banqueting facilities, parking for almost 1,000 vehicles, and a community partnership centre.

Its design is ultimately capable of accommodating up to 73,000 spectators, subject to further planning permission.

The club said it was anticipated the stadium would open for the beginning of the 2011-12 season.

Last night, the situation regarding the financing of the £350m stadium was unclear.

In January, the club's owners refinanced the debt they took on when buying the club in 2007 in a £350m deal.

It is understood that included in that deal was £60m to get work started on the stadium.

The Daily Post also understands that sum would be enough to cover costs of the build until around the end of 2008.

Gillett said: "This is a significant milestone for the club and I am delighted that the design received full planning consent and that we are now on site.

"We have been working very hard over the last six months to move the details of the design along, but this is the first tangible evidence for fans that a new LFC Stadium will be built.

"The stadium design is unique and will be recognised across the world as the Liverpool FC Stadium.

"It incorporates a Kop stand that will hold 18,000 fans, and we hope that the stadium will be as noisy and atmospheric on a matchday as Anfield."

Hicks added: "We recognise the importance of a new LFC Stadium as part of the wider regeneration of the local area.

"We have watched the council transform Stanley Park over the last six months, and the ongoing refurbishment of houses in the Anfield/ Breckfield area.

"I am pleased that, now the club has received full planning permission, it can join the regeneration process with the commencement of enabling works."

club anthem

youll never walk alone

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown...
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone... You'll never walk alone.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...
You'll never walk alone

2.andrea dossena

1st team profile

Left-back Andrea Dossena signed from Serie A side Udinese in July 2008.

The Italian was a direct replacement for the outgoing John Arne Riise.

Dossena began his career aged 14 with Hellas Verona in northern Italy, coming through the ranks before spending four seasons in the senior squad.

His big break came when he signed for Udinese in 2005, though he was immediately loaned to Treviso FBC 1993 for a year.

The defender returned to the Stadio Friuli ahead of the 2006-07 campaign, where his form eventually earned a first international cap in a friendly against South Africa in October 2007.

By the end of the season his move to Merseyside had been confirmed, with Dossena saying: "Liverpool are a great team and it is great to be linked to such a famous club.

"I want to play Champions League football. The Reds have already won it and they often get to the big games. In England, they are on the same level as Manchester United."

3.steve finnan

1st team profile

Right-back Steve Finnan signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2003.

A model of consistency, it is often said that the one-time Republic of Ireland international is an unsung hero. Not that you'll struggle to find anyone on the Kop willing to sing his praises.

It was a long journey to the Premier League for Finnan, who began his career with non-league Welling United before turning professional with Birmingham City in 1995.

After only a handful of appearances he was on his way to Notts County, where a string of excellent performances attracted the attention of Fulham boss Kevin Keegan.

Finnan became a firm favourite at Craven Cottage following his £600,000 move in November 1998. Three years later he played a key role in the Londoners' promotion to the top flight.

Having made his international debut against Greece in April 2000, Mr Reliable had no problems adapting to the Premier League, and in 2001-02 he was selected in the PFA Team of the Year ahead of the likes of Gary Neville.

From there he appeared in all four of Ireland's matches during the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

Gerard Houllier was suitably impressed and swooped ahead of the 2003-04 season.

Finnan made his Reds debut in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on August 17, 2003. However, a series of injuries disrupted his first year on Merseyside, and the appointment of a new manager in the summer of 2004 prompted some to cast doubt on his future at the club.

The arrival of Spanish defender Josemi did nothing to strengthen the right-back's position, but his ultra-professionalism and composed defending won the day.

A host of players have since arrived to challenge for his slot, but none have come close to ousting the number three.

Finnan started the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul, though injury meant he was forced to withdraw at half-time.

In May 2007 he featured in his second European Cup final, playing 88 minutes before Benitez introduced Alvaro Arbeloa.

The popular Irishman signed a new two-year deal in August 2007, with the option of a further year beyond that.

Six months later he announced his retirement from international football.

4. Sami Hyypia

Position: Defender
Squad number: 4
Date of birth: 7/10/73
Birth Place: Porvoo
Former clubs: Pallo-Peikot, KuMu, MyPa Anjalankoski, Willem II
Transfer Fee: £3m
A superb acquisition by Gerard Houllier. Signed from Dutch club Willem II, with whom he captained to a place in the Champions League, Sami Hyypia became the cornerstone of Liverpool's defence during the 1999-2000 season, forming a rock-solid partnership with Stephane Henchoz.
Finnish international Hyypia began his career with little known club MyPa Anjalankoski and helped them lift the Finnish Cup in 1992. He made his international debut against Tunisia and his performances soon attracted the attentions of Dutch outfit Willem II, who went on to sign him in 1995.
Hyppia sacrificed the opportunity to play in the Champions League to move to Anfield and proved to be an absolute steal at £3 million.
Dominant in the air, commanding at the back and cool under pressure, Hyypia fast became a Kop idol. Gerard Houllier later named Hyypia captain in the absence of the injured Jamie Redknapp and vice-captain Robbie Fowler, as he led the team out in the UEFA Cup and FA Cup finals of the 2000/01 treble winning season.
He later assumed the captaincy on a full time basis in 2002 before being replaced by current skipper Steven Gerrard in the autumn of 2003. The writing may have appeared to be on the wall for Hyypia's future at the club but his professionalism and commitment allowed him to survive the Benitez revolution at the club and he played an important role in the European Cup triumph of 2004/05, scoring a vital goal against Juventus in the quarter finals and playing his part in the defensive line-ups that secured famous victories over Chelsea in the semi-finals and AC Milan in the Istanbul final.
He also played his part in the following season's FA Cup win, scoring the opening goal in the 7-0 rout of Birmingham City quarter-final stage as well as nearly scoring a memorable extra-time goal in Cardiff against West Ham in the final.

5. Daniel Agger

Position: Defender
Squad number: 5
Date of birth: 12/11/1984
Birth place: Denmark
Former clubs: Rosenhoj, Brondby
Transfer fee: £5.8 million
THE highly-rated Danish international was captured by Rafael Benitez when the youngster arrived from Brondby for £5.8 million in January 2006.
Since leaving first club Rosenhoj and making his Brondby debut as a 19-year old, Agger has impressed for club and country in central defence.
He played during Denmark's 4-1 humiliation of England against the likes of Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, proving to be good in the air and have a good left foot.
Agger arrived on Merseyside an exciting prospect and has impressed another Reds legend and fellow countryman, Jan Molby, during his short career to date.
Agger made only four appearances for the Reds during the latter half of the 2005/06 campaign but established himself as Jamie Carragher's centre back partner the following season, scoring an incredible 30-yard strike against West Ham at the start of the season and also contributing a clinical strike against Chelsea at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final to help send the Reds to their seventh European Cup final.

7.robbie keane

1st team profile

Irish striker Robbie Keane has been tearing Premier League defences apart for years - now he's doing so with a Liver bird on his chest.

The forward arrived at Anfield in July 2008 in what was his sixth major move since starting out with South Dublin side Crumlin United as a schoolboy.

Fourteen years before joining the Rafalution, Keane chose Wolverhampton Wanderers over Liverpool in order to gain first-team experience.

The decision seemed justified when, in 1997 and aged just 17, he burst onto the scene with a raft of spectacular goals which were usually followed by his trademark cartwheel celebration.

It was no surprise when Premiership side Coventry City agreed to fork out £6million in 1999 - then a British record for a teenager.

A tally of 12 goals in 34 games for the Highfield Road club soon made Keane one of the hottest properties in football; someone with the ability to turn a game with a sublime touch of brilliance.

Even so, one or two eyebrows were raised when Marcelo Lippi, manager of Italian giants Inter Milan, offered £13million for his services in 2000.

The Republic of Ireland captain would team up with Ronaldo and Christian Vieri in Serie A, though the move was to turn sour when Lippi was sacked.

A loan move to Leeds United was arranged in December 2000, where nine goals in 14 games persuaded David O'Leary to write a cheque for £12million.

Unfortunately, Keane's arrival at Elland Road coincided with a growing financial crisis, and he was to join the exodus of stars in 2002 with a £7million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

Over the next few years the prodigious talent finally settled, tallying an impressive 107 goals in 253 appearances and becoming a firm fans' favourite.

So good was his form in February 2006 that Inter president Massimo Moratti admitted his regret at letting Keane go.

Three months before departing for Merseyside he won his first senior honour as a player after helping Spurs beat Chelsea in the League Cup final.

Keane has also carved out a name for himself on the international stage having made up part of the so-called Golden Generation which emerged in the late 1990s.

The frontman was part of the Irish side which triumphed in the 1998 European U18 Championships just months after making his senior bow against the Czech Republic.

His first international goal came against Malta in October 1998 and he is now the Republic's all-time record scorer ahead of Niall Quinn.

Keane famously scored a last-minute equaliser against Germany in the 2002 World Cup, one of three in the tournament.

Few were surprised when former Reds defender Steve Staunton handed him the captain's armband upon taking the Irish reins in 2006.

8. steven gerrard

1st team profile

8. Steven Gerrard

Postition: Midfielder
Squad number: 8
Date Of Birth: 30.05.80
Birth Place: Whiston
Former clubs: Trainee
Transfer Fee: N/A
Skipper of Liverpool and the driving force of the Reds' midfield, Steven Gerrard fulfilled a lifetime's ambition when he captained his boyhood idols to Champions League glory in May 2005.
It was his headed goal which began the amazing comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul, which culminated in Liverpool's fifth European Cup win.
Having made his way through the ranks, Gerrard - then only 18 - made his debut in a UEFA Cup tie against Celta Vigo in November 1998.
A product of the Liverpool Academy, Gerrard is versatile enough to have played at right back and even right midfield, but it is at centre midfield where he has made his mark.
Indeed, his early performances in a Liverpool shirt were rewarded when he was called up to the England national squad for Euro 2000.
It was ex-Anfield favourite Kevin Keegan who handed Gerrard his full England debut against Ukraine in May 2000. He has since gone on to establish himself as a regular in the national side.
Although missing out on the 2002 World Cup through injury, Gerrard did take part in Euro 2004 in Portugal, scoring one goal during the tournament.
Gerrard also captained Liverpool to FA Cup glory in May 2006, scoring twice in the final itself against West Ham, including a last minute wonder goal, to rescue the Reds and take the match to extra-time.
In what was a gruelling 2005/06 season, he netted an impressive 22 goals in all competitions.
He also starred for England in their 2006 World Cup campaign, scoring twice.
Tough in the tackle, and a sublime passer of the ball, Gerrard is capable of scoring spectacular goals and is under contract at Anfield until 2011.

9. fernando torres

1st team profile

9. Fernando Torres

Position: Forward
Squad number: 9
Date of birth: 20.03.84.
Birth place: Madrid, Spain
Former clubs: Athletico Madrid
Transfer fee: £20m
Striker Fernando Torres is Liverpool's record signing, moving from boyhood club Athetico Madrid in July 2007 for a fee of around £20m.
Beloved by Athletico fans, his transfer to Liverpool was met with protest and even petitions by the supporters in Madrid.
The Spanish side did not qualify for the UEFA cup in the 2006-2007, meaning Torres would have to look elsewhere for European football.
He now wears the famous number 9 shirt which both Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush wore before him.  Rafa Benitez said that Torres had taken a pay cut in order to join Liverpool.
Torres was snapped up by Athletico Madrid at the age of 11 where he quickly became a hot prospect for the future, making his first team debut at a club record age of just 17.  In his 214 appearances for the Spanish side, the player scored 82 goals.  He was the team's leading scorer for five seasons in a row, coming behind only David Villa in Samuel Eto'o in La Liga goals scored.
Torres has played for Spain at international level throughout his career, figuring in the Euro 2004 tournament as well as the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where he scored three goals, catching the attention of foreign clubs.
Following the World Cup, Torres turned down a move to Chelsea to spend another season with Althetico.
Torres has represented his country since his teens, winning the Algarve tournament with Spain's under-16 squad in 2001 and winning UEFA's European under-16 tournament in the same year- finishing as top scorer.
Nicknamed 'El Nino' ('The Kid') for his youthful looks, Torres was Athletico's youngest ever Captain- leading the side at the age of just 19.
Forward Luis Garcia, who had been at Liverpool since 2004 moved in the opposite direction to Torres during the summer break, signing a three-year deal with Athletico for a fee of around £4m.
Like Gerard Houllier before him, Rafa Benitez has had a tendency to buy players from his home country, which has had mixed results as many players stuggle to adapt to the physical, high-tempo pace of Premiership football.
Torres however has made an immediate impact on Liverpool's Premiership campaign, scoring an important goal against Chelsea on his league debut and netting two in the Reds' 6-0 thrashing of Derby County at Anfield.

10.andriy voronin

10. Andriy Voronin

Position: Forward
Squad number: 10
Date of birth: 21.07.79.
Birth place: Odessa, Ukraine
Former clubs: Chornomorets Odessa, Borussia Monchengladbach, Mainz, Koln, Bayer Leverkusen
Transfer fee: Free transfer
Andriy Voronin joins Liverpool from German side Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer and will start the 2007-2008 season in the number 10 shirt.  The Ukrainian international can be deployed as a striker but can also be used in midfield, as he frequently is during international appearances.
Voronin enjoyed an excellent strike rate at his previous club, netting 32 goals in 92 appearances and was even more prolific during his time at 2. Bundesliga side Mainz with 29 goals in 75 games.
Rafa Benitez has described Voronin as a 'clever' player, stressing that his abilities to play both in midfield and upfront can increase Liverpool's attacking options.
The striker began his career at Ukrainian outfit Chornomerets Odessa before transferring to German side Borussia Monchengladbach at the age of 15 where he learned his trade playing primarily in the youth sides.
Borussia found themselves relegated to Germany's second tier of football in 1999 and after just one season in the 2. Bundesliga, Voronin joined Mainz for a fee of just %u20AC45,000.  This successful spell at Mainz left the player as top scorer for both of his seasons at the club, finishing as 2. Bundesliga's highest goal scorer during the second season, with 20 goals.
The Ukranian has been capped more than 40 times for his country, playing in the Euro 2004 qualifiers and featuring as part of the squad which made it to the quarter finals of the 2006 World Cup.  He has scored five times for Ukraine.
Voronin has demonstrated that he can extend his impressive strike rate into the Premiership by scoring twice for the Reds in three league appearances.
A four-year contract should keep Voronin at Anfield until 2011.

12. Fabio Aurelio

Position: Defender
Squad Number: 12
Date of Birth: 24/09/1979
Birth Place: Sao Paulo, Brazil
Former clubs: Sao Paulo, Valencia
Transfer Fee: Free
Fabio Aurelio became the first Brazilian to play for Liverpool, when he signed in at Anfield in July 2006, signing a four-year deal.
Rafael Benitez swooped to secure his services on a free transfer from his old club Valencia, where Aurelio spent six years.
Comfortable at full back or wing back, the Brazilian adds depth to the left hand side.
Aurelio has won championships in both Brazil and Spain.

14. xabi alonso

1st team profile

14. Xabi Alonso

Postition: Midfielder
Squad Number: 14
Date of Birth: 25/11/1981
Birth Place: Spain
Former clubs: Real Sociedad, SD Eibar
Transfer Fee: £10.5m
Having been courted by some of Europe's top clubs, midfielder Alonso joined the Reds from Real Soceidad for a fee of £10.5 million in August 2004.
During his first season at Anfield, he became a firm favourite with the crowd, displaying a superb range of passing and proving a man for all occasions. An injury sustained in the New Year's Day defeat to Chelsea kept him out until mid April, when an assured display against Juventus in Turin saw the Reds through to the Semi-Finals of the Champions League.
His equalising goal in the final of that tournament already has its permanent place in Anfield folklore.
Alonso shot to prominence at the Spanish club during the 2002/03 season when Sociedad finished as runners up behind Real Madrid in La Liga.
While at Real Sociedad, Alonso was seen as an extremely promising central midfielder in La Liga. He rose up through the youth ranks and first played with the San Sebastian team during the 99-2000 season.
In 2000/2001 Xabi spent a loan period at minnows SD Eibar before going back to Real Sociedad later on in that season when he would break into the team.
The 2002/2003 campaign was when Xabi really rose to fame and he was a crucial performer as Sociedad ended up second in La Liga behind the champions Real Madrid.
Alonso was then taken into the Spanish national football team for the first time during the year 2003 and kicked off at the age of 21 with a 4-0 friendly win against Ecuador.
During 2003/2004 Alonso took part in 35 games for Real Sociedad and scored a goal against Valencia that nobody will forget soon, offering Rafael Benitez a glimpse of his full talent. He also played with Spain during Euro 2004.
Xabi originates from a renowned footballing family. His father (Miguel Angel 'Periko' Alonso) was famous with Barcelona and while with Real Sociedad won two league titles. Xabi's brother, midfielder (Mikel Alonso), is also on the books at Real Sociedad.
He signed a new contract at Anfield in the summer of 2007.

16. Jermaine Pennant

Position: Winger
Squad number: 16
Date of birth: 15.01.83.
Birth place: Nottingham, England
Former clubs: Notts County, Arsenal, Birmingham City,
Transfer fee: £6.7m (Could rise to £8m with add-ons)
Jermaine Pennant's performances during his first season at Liverpool have impressed boss Rafa Benitez enough to earn him a stay despite his revamp of the team.
The midfielder, who joined from Birmingham City at the end of the 2005-2006 campaign, put in an impressive performance during Liverpool's Champions League Final defeat against AC Milan- earning him the man of the match award.
Pennant came to Liverpool following club Birmingham City's relegation to the Championship, signing for a fee of £6.7m- potentially rising to £8m with add-ons.
From an early age it was clear that Pennant's pace and skilful dribbling abilities would make him an asset in the Premiership and he was snapped up by Arsene Wenger at the age of 15, transferring from boyhood club Notts County to Arsenal for a fee of £2m- a record for a trainee at the time.
Pennant gained a reputation for trouble whilst at Arsenal, committing a string of misdemeanours which included staying out late before an important England under-21 game, punching a Polish player during another match and turning up late to training.
The player continued to court controversy, being sentenced to 90 days imprisonment while playing for Birmingham City on loan in 2005, after being found guilty of drunk driving while already banned.
Although released from prison after just thirty days, Pennant was required to wear an electronic tag - meaning he had to play his Birmingham city games with the tag.
Despite being a regular first team player for Liverpool and often turning in some excellent performances, an England call-up has eluded Pennant, despite the 24 caps he received representing his country at under-21 level.
The winger, who was a regular fixture for Liverpool throughout the 2006-2007, has two Charity Shield honours to his name and won the FA Youth Cup with Arsenal in 2001.

17. Alvaro Arbeloa

Position: Defender
Squad number: 17
Date of birth: 17.01.83.
Birth place: Salamanca, Spain
Former clubs: Real Madrid C, Real Madrid Castilla, Real Madrid, Deportivo de la Coruna
Transfer fee: £2.5m
Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa joined Liverpool in January 2007 following a spell at La Liga outfit Deportivo de la Coruna, signing for a fee of around £2.5m.
Arbeloa is a product of Real Madrid's youth system, signing for the team at the age of 16.  The defender played at three different tiers of the club, including the full side, second and third reserve teams.
The majority of Arbeloa's Madrid football was spent playing in the Real Madrid Castilla side, Real's reserve team who currently play in the Segunda Division B, where he notched up fifty appearances between 2003 and 2006.
Spanish reserve teams are allowed to play in the conventional league system, unlike their English counterparts, meaning that Castilla played at a level equivalent to League One in England.
Craving first team football, Arbeloa left for La Liga side Deportivo de la Coruna halfway through the 2006-2007 campaign
He cited the difficulty which home-grown players, in the face of competition from the cream of the worlds' top footballers, have in breaking through to a regular place in the first team squad as his reason for leaving the Bernabeu.
After signing for Deportivo, it wasn't long before Arbeloa's quality attracted the attention of Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who recruited the defender after just 20 games and half a season at the Spanish club.
Arbeloa previously worked under Benitez whilst part of the Real Madrid youth team.
The player's first full debut came against former rivals Barcelona in a Champions League clash, where his staunch defence and cool containment of dangerous striker Lionel Messi helped Liverpool to an unlikely 2-1 victory over the reigning champions.
Liverpool managed the feat once more on the home leg, putting the side into the quarter finals of the contest.
