Basic Facts about Kinyarwanda
The Kinyarwanda language is a Bantu language spoken primarily in Rwanda, where it is one of the official languages of the country. French and English are also official languages in Rwanda. It is also referred to as Rwanda or Ruanda.
It is also spoken well in southern Uganda as well as in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Interestingly , Kinyarwanda is related to Kirundi, which is spoken in Burundi and Tanzania. Kinyarwanda is mutually intelligible with Kirundi which in turn is an official language of Burundi ( Ethnologue, 15th ed).
Kinyarwanda is spoken by approximately 7 million speakers.Like many African language, Kinyarwanda is a tonal language which makes it sometimes challening for native English speakers.
