Kipsy's Return

Ranked #3,503 in Squidoo Community, #259,105 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund

What is Kipsy's Return?

Kipsy is depressed. She needs to lose a lot of baggage, balance her lifestyle, and get a new look while working through her depression over her love running off with a younger man.

She has not been in the public eye for some time, but has landed a return role from her former days of fame. Too bad she has gained about 10 dress sizes. She needs to get in shape and come back stronger than ever. But the same old routine just isn't going to cut it anymore.

This is a challenge in proportion to the great Miss Piggy or Kirstie Alley. Perhaps not grace, but guts will win this battle of the bulge!

This lens chronicles how I solved and traveled this particular Squidoo quest. Please share your Kipsy Quest or comeback from depression stories in the comment sections. IF you have a lens about this, let me know so I can add them to the roll or honor below!

If you are just beginning, get creative, get practical, or just get silly. Happy depression dueling to you all.

This lens may be never ending and is changed and updated often. It is quite likely Squidoo's first soap drama lens.
The characters and tale will evolve over time as lenses and lensmakers are discovered for incorporating into it.

If you have an idea how the story should go, or wish it would have happened a different way, do speak up. We can afford to be flexible here....

So please continue down this lens, for a bit of a soap drama with some purpose in mind.

Dedication of this lens and a big Thank You

Middle aged or feeling like forty something just got a middle school assignment?

This section is for Kipsy's story from the bottomless pit of despair to her comeback ways.

I dedicate this lens to my former virtual coach and current friend, Ariane Benefit.
(thanks for teaching me kindness to self and constantly reminding me how smart I seemed to you while beating my head against those same walls over and over again)

One of a kind Story begins below:

One of a Kind Story by RhondaSueDavis and other lensmakers on Squidoo

Below is the main story of this lens, by chapter and verse. Please enjoy and share your story ideas!

Chapter One-What is your Prediction?

Can lasting change come from the depths of despair?

This lens takes a lighter approach to depression, but many of the things people deal with are far more serious than what Kipsy experiences in this story. How does one handle being diagnosed with an incurable disease, or losing a loved on suddenly. Returning from the battle field or leaving an abusive home? These are few that come to my mind.

Do you think people can make positive and lasting chagne? Is it worth it?

My prediction

Kipsy will change out her depressing ways for happier days

Quite often from the pits of the deepest despair sprout the heights of unimagineable joy. One can't see it from the darkness, but others who have been in the pit can bring sparkles of light.

Many in hindsight reflect upon their 'greatest despairs at the time' as their greatest gifts.

Thank Kipsy will have many ups and downs, but that over time she will make the changes she needs to make to pull out of her depression and have a more fulfilled life.

Chapter One "Leftovers"

Kipsy's Return-Setting the Stage-Chapter One "Leftovers"

We pick up the story on a frightful Friday afternoon.

Kipsy realizes once and for all her man really has gone for good, He ran off with Giggly the ice cream truck driver, and apparently they are extremely happy together.

She feels fat. And part of her could care less, about anything. And she is about two thirds of the way done eating an oversized bag of puffed cheese curls, Her fingers and the edges of her mouth and teeth are covered with the orange greasy residue, and she keeps wiping her hands and face off on her white t shirt, so that is a mess as well.

Then the door bell rings, and although she would rather not answer it, she does. It's mom. Great.

Mom is clearing out her storage unit, currently full of mostly her three now middle aged childrens belongings. She has brought Kipsy's collection of bicycle parts to be left at Kipsy's place, for keeps. Double great.

The bike is a mess and it has a fat seat. They unload mom's trunk and back seat of all the bicycle stuff and other boxes, putting these in Kipsy's apartment living room for now. After mom has had her usual cup of tea, sweetened with a Splenda packet she brought from home, she heads back home.

Kipsy really doesn't want to mess with all the stuff that just landed in her living room today, so the various pieces of bicycle and boxes just kinda sit there, an eye sore to anyone who will enter the front door. Triple great.

Fast forward to next morning, Saturday.
Kipsy and her man had agreed last year to coach the local YMCA roller hockey team. The YMCA will have to cancel this season's reality show if she cannot keep her commitment. Too bad she is going to look so fat during filming.

She spends some time getting together some information from the Y, and puts together an equipment list for the parents and kids that will be meeting at the local skating rink next Thursday. Then when she calls the skating rink to confirm the practice time, she finds out they are only available for games (which will be at 7 am in the morning on Saturdays), and she will have to find another location for practice sessions.

She calls the Y and they let her know one of the other coaches for the older team is looking at securing an airport hanger for the practice sessions.

This could get interesting. Kipsy is gonna need a set of roller skates and has not been roller skating for at least a decade. And her workout clothes don't even fit anymore. And her car just broke down. Fabulous.

She decides she better start on getting her bike together and getting her own equipment in order for the season. And decides she will start on that right away. Right after she finishes off the three pieces of leftover cheesecake sitting in the fridge.

Make your own and own it! Beyond the blame and shame is a diamond in the rough that wants to sparkle and shine.

I was asked to make a positive set of words about me from my name and then look at them at least three times a day, to help in looking at things in a more positive light of what was working and build on that instead of focus to what was broken or past worth worry over.

This was hard. Too many choices! And the negative words seemed to come easier than the rest. After about 15 variations I settled on a set for my first name, then I could not be stopped. I made on for my whole name and it fits.

Here is my name below, and who I am that makes me worth sharing and being. Can you do one? don't be shy and ok to try until you get one that fits for the time and travel toward home.

Rod Manwell says: (posted to facebook) I would really like to comment on the site about Kirsty Alley, she gained a whole lot of weight for a movie role then tried to make an additional profit by being a spokesperson for Jennie Craig. She found out that it is much easier to pack pounds on than take them back off. Jennie Craig had to fire her since she didn't lose enough weight, quickly enough for them. Is really sad that a once attractive lady felt the need to try and make money by manipulating her shape.

Poll Module-who deals with depression the most in life?

By the way the picture is of my sister, who happens to be one of the least depressed people I have ever known. And she is always going through major stuff. She is 19 years my junior and was one of the bubbliest babies you ever did see. She donates much of her time and most of her talent serving others, fundraising, being a teacher's assistant, swimming, and creating one of a kind art work items for her friends and family.

Factiod-depression in the older populations is increasing

Today medical practitioners are seeing a rise in depression among white males over 55. This is attributed to smaller family size. With less siblings to share life with, many families have lost structure and integrity, leaving the workplace the main focus for young and middle aged men.

Many in today's older population do not know that depression is not normal, or know what it is, or that it is treatable if identified and addressed with others in their community.

Some of the best ways to begin to address depression in the elderly is to help them identify what they perceive as their unsolvable problems, brainstorm ways to work on that TODAY, without staying stuck in the past or the can't do anything about it mode, and follow up on what is working as they go. Also help them find and schedule many activities they enjoy doing, to help them back from the isolation and self loathing that can occur in the depressed state.

(This section curated from PEARLS caregiver training class taken in Lakewood, WA on September 2011)

Battling Depression-not a light matter

If you need it, get some professional help!

This lens is not complete without mentioning the darker side of depression, and how facing it in community makes all the difference.

Isolation and denial are harmful habits for the person who finds themselves depressed. Know the signs, ask for help and know that everyone gets depressed sometime. It is when you no longer are you and it just won't go away that the game has got to be changed for the better.

I went through a time in my life I could not even get dressed, felt like "I just can't do this anymore" and had not desire to be a mom, wife or anything. I was not myself and was irritable and angry and cried a lot, which just reinforced the self loathing thinking of " I am no good for anyone" Two things I heard around this time that I feel helped me, was a neighbor sharing how her mother had committed suicide when she was a kid, and how someone who does that is committing one of the most selfish acts possible, even if they are stuck "feeling sorry" for them selves. I was able to call a helpline through my husbands employer that got me into a talk counselor. That was the break I needed to stop the downward cycle of self destruction. It has not been an easy journey, but always eventful and forgiving and so much better than the broke down on the side of the road mess I had made of myself back then, mostly from trying to run about 100 miles per hour on very little rest, relaxation or self care.

These links show typical symptoms and strategies and solutions known to be effective battling major depression. It is usually more than a trip to the beauty shop or pulling oneself up by the boot straps.

Relationships, nerves and confidence can take years to recover and rebuild. But what a worthy challenge!

You don't have to be rich to combat depression. If insurance is not available, it is worth finding resources in our local community to help with this common and treatable, and deadly condition.

I remember someone telling me that a person who commits suicide is doing an extremely selfish thing with their pain. Not an easy nugget to face up to.

People who are depressed often cannot see beyond the agony or apathy they are in, and one good nights sleep is not just going to fix everything if there are chronic issues at hand. Responding to them in a callous or feel sorry for them manner is not usually going to help for the longer haul (in my opinion)

Mercy in grace is more than moving on or giving in.

Giving up is for the dying, living is something a human can do as long as they have a heartbeat.

Live well in times of plenty and in times of toil. No one does it alone. And no one rides the wave all their days either.

Press on and embrace hope, especially when enjoyment of anything has escaped you. Life does resume with help, depression is treatable and it takes tenacity to tread the road toward health. (in mind, body and/or soul)

What is the differnece between depression, delirium, and dementia? They are often confused for one another.
Med Scape news article on this worth a read.

I took a caregive class on this topic last year, it really opened my eyes. It is not good enough to just say people are all depressed or all old people are just going senile. There are some different situations going on and the identification and best case response varies.

Biggest differences are the causes and cures available for dementia, depression, and delirium.

Dementia is caused by many conditions and is when the brain has essentially "unplugged" and begun to die, can take 5 to 20 years for the individual to run it's course. It is not curable. People with dementia are often also depressed.

Delirium is caused by to much or too little of a substance in a persons body. Being drunk or undernourished are two good examples. Delirium is treatable, provided the cause is identified, corrected, and the person survives the overdose or lack of essential nutrients long enough to recover.

Depression is treatable, but if it is missed in the equation and not treated, is deadly. Medication, cognitive therapy, healthy social and physical activity, as well as aid in building positive self image are best known modern day practices.

I really learned from this lens depression is healed when you give it all to Jesus completely, the way of thinking will be change according to His word from the Bible it help me not to give up and help me to be more confident in what I do now. The Word of God is Life to me and my two girls. No medicine will help take away depression only our Hope to Jesus will Heal us.

Thank you unqedomain! Jesus is Lord. I used to be anti medication, but have seen people I care about do better when needing medication when properly fit to the individual and when added to other treatments (professional help, not self medication) Some people do not respond well to medication and some have addiction issues, so not for everyone. Depression does not always need medication, or professional counseling, however if it is something that is just not going away and the person is not the person that is usual for them, it is time to ask for help. Sometimes just the talk therapy does wonders and some cases medication is at least a consideration. my opinion from observation, not fact. Medication and costs and quality of the medical individuals and effect on economy & environment is a whole other can of worms. If you have faith in Christ, prayer with other believers and consultation with pastors and medical professionals is good to search this out.

Maybe Kipsy could use a virtual coach, a talk counselor or fitness trainer, instead of another box of tissue.

Somewhere Down the Road by Amy Grant

Can't say enough in appreciation of this album

I like every song on this newer release by (surprise) Amy Grant. It is a collection of songs I listened to on many a bike ride in a year when everything seemed to be very very hard.

The been through tougher time and lets get real tone of these songs still really inspire me each time I hear them.

"Every Road that's traveled" sounds like unresolved conflict, or conflict realized and left alone.

Let me know if you have heard this collection and what your favorites are. I have trouble picking one, but it would be "Overnight" which she recorded and sings on this album with her daugher, Sarah Chapman. And another is the song she sings about her aging mother "Unafraid".

Listening to this again "Hard Times" kicks.

Then there is "Find what you're looking for" which points out you can find bad in the best of people and good in the worst of things. ...

"Come into my World" sounds like the song of depression. Who is she singing to in that one? A person, an addiction? A person who sticks around even in dark times?

This album has quite a range of songs, all in some way about relationship to others, self and disconnect.

To listen to some samples of the titles, check out the Mp3 module I have placed at above in this lens.

These songs carried me through some dark and cloudy times. It wasn't all the songs, but they really resonated, and still do.

Quite a range in this album, but all in keeping with the cover.
