The History of the Kit Cat Clock

Kit-Cat Clock, Lime Green

In 1932, the California Clock Company made the very first Kit Cat Clock. No one had seen anything like this before: A clock shaped like a black cat, with a swinging tail and eyes that moved back and forth. The Kit Cat Clock brought a little happiness to Americans who were struggling through the Great Depression.

The original Kit Cat Clocks were black and white. But in the 1980's, the company started introducing Kit Cat Clocks in other colors--sometimes even with jewels!

What's the Correct Way to Spell "Kit Cat Clock"?

Kit Kat? Kit Kat Klock? Kit Cat Klock...?

Kit Cat ClockWhat's the "correct" way to spell Kit Cat Clock? This one has left me scratching my head for some time. I've seen it spelled different ways: Kit-Cat Clock, Kit Cat Klock, and Kit Kat Klock.

The "Kit-Cat Klock" spelling appears more than once on the old Kit-Cat website. Which drives me a little nuts, not because "Clock" is misspelled, but because "Cat" isn't spelled with a K. If you're going to be cutesy and say "Klock," why not "Kit Kat Klock"? It flows! It has symmetry! It's...

Then I realized that the acronym for Kit Kat Klock would be KKK. Oh. Okay, bad idea.

The new website has apparently dropped the "klock" spelling. Going by this, I think it's safe to say that the official name of our favorite kitty clock is "Kit-Cat Clock."

Looking for an Original Kit Cat Clock?

I have to admit, the new Kit Cat Clocks aren't in the same class as the originals that were made in the 1930's. In the 1980's, the California Clock Company was forced to completely redesign the Kit Cat Clock to help keep prices competitive. If they hadn't re-engineered Kit Cat, they would have been forced to move production overseas.

On the plus side, Kit Cat Clocks are one of the few things STILL made in America. The downside? They're made of plastic, and they don't work quite as well as they used to. Sometimes a Kit Cat Clock will stop moving, and the tail needs a quick nudge to get it swinging again. That's just the price we've had to pay to keep having Kit Cat Clocks made in this country.

If you want an original electric Kit Cat Clock to hang on your wall, your best bet is to look on eBay.

My First Introduction to the Kit Cat Clock

Kit Cat Clock - Honey I Shrunk the KidsThe first time I ever saw a Kit Cat Clock was in the Disney movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. The Szalinski family had a kitty clock that meowed on the hour. I was six years old and thought it was the greatest thing ever.

I was crushed when I learned that Kit Cat Clocks don't meow. I never quite got over it.

The Kit Cat Clock in Popular Culture

Kit Kat ClocksThe Kit Cat Clock has appeared in many movies, TV shows, and books. For example, it's just one of many clocks you'll see in Dr. Emmet Brown's house in the movie Back to the Future. There's a Kit Cat Clock that meows on the hour in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Stephen King even uses a Kit Cat Clock to creepy effect in his novel Bag of Bones.

Pay extra attention when you watch a movie... you just might see a glimpse of Kit Cat Clock's grinning face and wagging tail!

Fun Facts about Jeweled Kit Cat Clocks

Jeweled Kit Kat ClockEvery so often, the California Clock Company makes special Kit Cat Clocks that not only come in different colors, but are also decorated with jewels! And they don't just glue on cheap rhinestones or plastic gems: They use Austrian crystals.

A jeweler has to go to the trouble to place each jewel on the Kit Cat Clock. The crystals are placed with painstaking accuracy to ensure that they won't fall off later. That's why you won't see very many jeweled Kit Cat Clocks: These extra special clocks are released as limited editions at certain times of the year.
