Kitchen Cabinets - The One Thing Everyone Forgets
Many years back my wife and I decided to redesign our kitchen - mainly to get an easier work-flow and to add a breakfast bar. And after all the planning, designing, choosing the right cabinets and doors to fit, the disruption and finally paying (!), we were delighted with the result. We had an elegant, stylish brand-new kitchen, cabinets, worktops, breakfast bar and equipment...everything as required.
But only a few short weeks later, we discovered the key question we had forgotten to consider...

Our First Kitchen was Tiny!
We Had to Build In Wall Cabinets to Make the Best of It.
But 10 years earlier...
The kitchen in our first apartment measured just 3 x 9 feet (yes feet, not metres!). We were just married, and I was still an Engineering student at Glasgow University. There was just room for a small sink, and an even smaller cooker. It was in an awful state when we bought the place, which we completely gutted and refurbished, including the minuscule kitchen. We left the sink in place, but to replace the oven, it had to be lifted out over the sink, and through the kitchen door. And vice versa to install the new unit.
We ended up building smaller than standard kitchen cabinets, with sliding glass doors - no room to have opening doors, you see. This provided at least some storage space - but that would mean anyone planning to replace the cooker in future would need to first remove the built-in wall cabinets...
So with our newly remodeled kitchen, plus a shelved cupboard in the sitting room, just by the kitchen door, and the help of a few kitchen cabinet organizers, we managed to get ourselves set up.
Mind you, there was only room for one person at a time in the kitchen, so preparing meals and washing up afterwards were solo tasks, which we took in turns.
Fast forward 35 years and something like 12 homes later...
...and we've gone from the ridiculous to the sublime! The kitchen in our home here in Scotland is, if anything, overly spacious!
But it is an elegant design, with oak kitchen cabinets and doors, all the appliances we need, and still plenty of room for our breakfast bar!
No need for any kitchen cabinet refacing in the immediate future, but when we have some spare funds available we might upgrade the existing work tops with quality granite kitchen countertops.
