Kitchen Flooring and What Your Choices Are
The choice of kitchen flooring materials today is overwelming to say the least. You want a material that is going to look great, hold up to daily use, last for years, and not break the bank. The real question is where do you find the information to make sure you are making the best choice for you and your family. The flooring that you pick is probably going to be something that you have for many years to come unless you have lots of money in which case you probably can hiring someone to do the research for you.You have a lot of choice ranging from the old standby of laminate and linoleum to up-and-coming options like bamboo, cork, and rubber. Some are better then others depending on what you are going for as far as looks and functionality. Most flooring materials today will last at minimum ten years and some will last longer then you will (those are also typically the more expensive ones as well).
There is a lot of information out there if you want to go searching for it but honestly who has the time to do that. Well I have but that is because I have heard so many horror stories because of the line of work that I'm in that I wanted to try and help people and try to avoid the types of stories that I hear on an all to regular basis.

Bamboo Kitchen Flooring

Bamboo is a grass that grows very quickly. When it matures, the stalks are milled into strips. These strips are then used as floorboards. Also in addition to strips you can also go for plank bamboo flooring. You can get both unfinished and pre-finished boards. The unfinished bamboo kitchen flooring comes with squarish edges. Roughly 3/8 or 5/8 inches thick the boards are arranged to look like a hardwood floor.
The best thing about bamboo is that it is environmentally friendly. It is available pre finished. It is a durable as well as looks great. Bamboo is stronger than most woods and lasts for decades. It has high fire resistance.
Probably the only shortcoming is that there is not much choice in color since you must confine yourself to the natural to dark shades. However, recently a lot of bamboo manufacturers are offering a much wider choice.
Your investment in bamboo kitchen flooring will run from $ 3 to $9 per square foot. Installation will cost extra. The pre finished bamboo involves additional expense.
Ceramic Tile Kitchen Flooring
Being dense, they are water resistant. Unlike earlier times, we now get ceramic kitchen floor tiles that measure 18 inches square, giving the room a spacious look. Kitchen designers love to use ceramic tiles. For kitchen floors, professionals suggest the group III tile among the grades I to IV for reasonable slip resistance. These tiles can be glazed or unglazed. The unglazed ones are more slip resistant when compared with glazed tiles. Some prefers the textured tiles, as they are even less slippery. You also get environmentally friendly ceramic tile composed of recycled materials.
The most important thing about ceramic kitchen tiles is the installation. The grout lines must be perfectly sealed using the right sealant. It is best to get the floor professionally installed. Maintenance is of course, very easy and only requires warm water and any household cleaner.
Ceramic tile can be very difficult to install if you are new to it but it can also save you a load of money if you install it yourself. The real question is how to learn without wasting a lot of money? Answer a wonderful video I found that makes the task of installing tile easy and mistake, and in turn cost, free. The video can be found at TileMadeEasy.com which cost $27.95 but it could easily save you hundreds of dollars and hours of wasted time, not to mention all of the personal frustration.
Pros and Cons of Ceramic Tile Flooring
Ceramic tiles are scratch resistant, water and fire resistant and strong. They can take a good beating in a high traffic area like the kitchen. These floors are easy to maintain.
While the variety available is mind boggling, there is a possibility that you may not find replacement tiles that are identical after a few years. Also, during installation, if the right glazing / sealant are not used, the tiles can come loose. Care must be taken to see that very heavy objects are not dropped on these surfaces as the tiles could break.
Cost of Ceramic Kitchen Flooring
When it comes to ceramic kitchen floors, the pricing can be quite flexible depending on the kind of tile you invest in. So it can range anywhere from $ 1 to $ 10 per square foot. The good news is you can achieve a really nice look thanks to the variety available in terms of shapes, sizes, colors, finish and thickness. There is a ceramic tile to suit every budget.
Cork Flooring is Quickly Gaining Popularity
Cork is one of the new 'green' kitchen flooring materials on the market today. It has been gaining in popularity the last few years which has also prompted new suppliers and added choices that where not available just a few years ago. Cork is known for its high level of strength and durability and can withstand a lot of abuse and keep coming back for more. If you are looking for a great option for the earth as well as your family cork is a great choice. You Tell Others Your Favorite Flooring Material
