My Kitchen Pantry List

Ranked #8,283 in Food & Cooking, #150,801 overall

Everything But...

I was making a lens about frugal recipes when I decided to list the staple food items I have at hand. The list was much bigger than I expected. Mind boggling, even. And that's without any extra goodies. It turned into a topic worthy of it's own lens.

I don't have it all in stock all the time but this is the mental list I usually choose from when planning and shopping. Items that are italicized I am planning on trying out.

Let's Start Something

My pantry list seems really generic to me, but I bet we all have pantry lists as individual as our fingerprints. So I challenge you to make your own pantry list lens and let me know about it. If there are enough I'll make a Squidoo group, and then maybe we can figure out a way to pool our talents to help stock public Food Pantries across the United States - maybe even around the world. With the downturn in the economy I know they are being stretched to their limits.

Home Canning and Preserving

i grew up with home canned vegetables and fruits. There is really no comparison between a tinned green bean or tomato or applesauce and what you can "put up" yourself. It's time consuming but by the middle of winter on into spring getting that taste of summer is well worth it.

Canning and Preserving For Dummies

There are official canning guides by the Department of Agriculture and Ball and Rodale but honestly I find canning to be a little intimidating - even with having been around it all my life - and those types of books don't help.

Despite the name I think that the Dummies (and Idiots) guides are easy to understand while being comprehensive.

Get Rid of Pantry Pests

A few years ago those disgusting pantry moths showed up at my family's house. Fortunately not too much later these moth traps appeared at one of the local garden supply stores. I suppose the traps are more readily available now but in case you can't find them here is a selection.

I love my pantry and was thinking of making a pantry list lens of all the essentials. You have covered pretty much everything. I'd have more spices, fresh garlic and coriander (cilantro) which I cannot do without.

If I had a pantry list like this, I wouldn't have to rely on substitutions. :D Bravo! 5 stars and lensrolled, too. Thanks
