Kitchener Oktoberfest in Ontario, Canada

The city of Kitchener in Ontario, Canada is home to the largest barvarian beerfest in North America each October. Many people come from other parts of Canada or the US to partake in the festivities which are complete with Oom Pa Pa bands, roasted beer nuts, german sausages and sauerkraut, the chicken dance, men wearing lederhosen and women in dirndls and of course, lots of beer on tap!

The first Kitchener Oktoberfest was in 1969. My first participation in the city's Oktoberfest celebration was in 2004. I had only just recently moved to the area but had enjoyed this German celebration at the Old Munich in Montreal in years past.

What To Wear?

You are welcome to wear jeans and a t-shirt - most people do. But, if you feel inspired and really want to get into the spirit of things, you can wear your lederhosen or dirndl to any of the clubs as there are quite a number of folks in traditional German dress.

You can purchase hats while you are at any of the clubs as well as a feather to go with it. Many regular Oktoberfesters wear the same hat every year, adorned with buttons from previous celebrations. You can also purchase the buttons at each of the clubs during Oktoberfest.

Family Fun at Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest celebrations are not limited to the festivities at the German clubs. Each year, there is also a pancake breakfast for families as well as a parade which is traditionally held on Thanksgiving Sunday and the Dogtoberfest. Yes, the Dogtoberfest is for our doggie friends and all proceeds go to the local Humane Society. Included in the doggie festivities is a doggie pageant, barrell rolling, carnival games and of course doggie food. Visit the main Kitchener Oktoberfest site for more information on these events.

Other Things To Do and See

Kitchener is part of the Waterloo Region which includes the cities of Cambridge and Waterloo. The region is located about one hour west of Toronto. Depending on how far you are willing to travel, you've got a number of things to do and see at your disposal. From the horseshoe waterfalls and wineries in the Niagara Region to the Wonderland amusement park north of Toronto to golfing on the numerous courses around Southwestern Ontario, you'll never be short on things to do.

A visit to Kitchener would not be complete without a visit to the nearby Village of St. Jacob's. The area was orignally settled by Pennsylvannia Mennonites in the early 1800's. At the St. Jacob's market, you'll be able to shop for Mennonite goods such as handmade quilts, furnishings and fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables. Visit this link for more information => Village of St. Jacob's.

This is a great Local Lens about the Kitchener Oktoberfest and it sure sounds like it would have been a wonderful thing to attend. Lensrolling to my Fall Harvest Festival which is quite small in comparison to the Oktoberfest. Blessed by a Squid Angel.

Sounds fantastic. I have only been to Canada once many years ago, although I do have friends in the Sardis, B.C. area. I get to Detroit, Michigan quite a bit and it's only a ten minute drive to Canada from my hotel downtown, but I simply have never gone except that one time. Perhaps I will make more of an effort for an event such as this. Wonderful lens.
