Things to look for when buying a kitchen sink...

The 'sink' sense: choosing a sink that's right for you

  • The main disadvantage of cast iron sinks is that they can chip or scratch, exposing the black surface underneath. it can often lead to rusting
  • Hot water does not hold its temperatures for very long in a cast iron sink.
  • Cast iron is one of the most difficult to install because they are are heavy and bulky in nature.
  • When choosing a stainless steel sink consider the gauge (thickness) of the steel. The thicker the better.
  • Consider the sound deadening ability (how loud the noise is when something is dropped into the sink).
  • Choose a stainless steel model with a satin texture finish. A 'mirror finish' may look nicer but they have a hard time holding up to normal wear and tear.
  • Stainless sinks are resistance to chipping, cracking or peeling.
  • Polyester/acrylic sinks are susceptible to scratching and staining.
  • On the flip side they keep their "shiny" look longer. Also available in a variety of colors. And affordable to those who have a tight budget.
  • Quartz composite sinks resist everyday cuts, scuffs and dents and can easily stand up to harsh cleaning materials or liquids that can stain other sinks.
  • The excellent thermal conductivity of quartz composite as well as the nature of the material means it will keep dishwater warm longer and also be able to take boiling pots straight off the stove.
  • Granite-Based sinks are the most scratch resistant of the lot.
  • Granite-based sinks are only available in matte finishes, so those who prefer a glossy look will have to look elsewhere.

What's the difference between a topmount and undermount sink?

An undermount sink sits below the cutout in the granite or marble. The stone overlaps part of the sink's rim, which provides for very easy care and maintenance.

A topmount sink sits above the cutout in the granite or marble with a lip or flange of the sink overlapping the stone.

Cleaning Your Kitchen Sink

Chances are that when you think of household germs, you think of toilets. It turns out though, that sinks, in particular kitchen sinks, not toilets, are one of the most germ-ridden areas of the house. The smooth surface of a sink is like a landscape of nooks and crannies for microbe's such as bacteria. Whenever bacteria find a site harboring moisture and food, they will set up house and grow. Resident bacteria can only survive for a few hours on a dry surface.

Ordinary scrubbing with a disinfectant will dissolve food particles and remove clinging microbes. Using a new or sterilized sponge, scrub the sides and bottom of the sink. Follow up with a sanitizing rinse with a solution of diluted household bleach, which will destroy even the most tenacious microbes. Let the solution stay wet in your sink for five minutes before drying off with a clean disposable paper towel.

For stains, porcelain and stainless steel can tolerate light abrasive cleaners such as liquid cleansers or baking soda. To remove stains from a porcelain sink, fill it with warm water and add a few tablespoons of chlorine bleach. Let the solution stand for an hour and rinse. If the stain persists, line the sink with paper towels, saturate them with chlorine bleach and let soak for a half-hour. Wear gloves and make sure the area is well-ventilated when using this technique.

Don't use abrasives on cultured marble, fibreglass or plastic. It will scratch the sink and cause it to become porous and prone to stains and germ growth. Always read product labels for proper use and safety precautions.
