Things to look for when buying a kitchen sink...
The 'sink' sense: choosing a sink that's right for you
- The main disadvantage of cast iron sinks is that they can chip or scratch, exposing the black surface underneath. it can often lead to rusting
- Hot water does not hold its temperatures for very long in a cast iron sink.
- Cast iron is one of the most difficult to install because they are are heavy and bulky in nature.
- When choosing a stainless steel sink consider the gauge (thickness) of the steel. The thicker the better.
- Consider the sound deadening ability (how loud the noise is when something is dropped into the sink).
- Choose a stainless steel model with a satin texture finish. A 'mirror finish' may look nicer but they have a hard time holding up to normal wear and tear.
- Stainless sinks are resistance to chipping, cracking or peeling.
- Polyester/acrylic sinks are susceptible to scratching and staining.
- On the flip side they keep their "shiny" look longer. Also available in a variety of colours. And affordable to those who have a tight budget.
- Quartz composite sinks resist everyday cuts, scuffs and dents and can easily stand up to harsh cleaning materials or liquids that can stain other sinks.
- The excellent thermal conductivity of quartz composite as well as the nature of the material means it will keep dishwater warm longer and also be able to take boiling pots straight off the stove.
- Granite-Based sinks are the most scratch resistant of the lot.
- Granite-based sinks are only available in matte finishes, so those who prefer a glossy look will have to look elsewhere.
