Kitchen Table Considerations
A list of things to think about before you buy a table
- How big is your family, and will you be eating meals at the kitchen table (or is it just an area where the kids can do their homework or have a snack while a dining room table handles family meals)?
- How big is your kitchen? (A huge table doesn't make sense in a small space, and likewise a tiny table can look silly in a cavernous kitchen.)
- Is the kitchen table a place where your family will sit and eat or do you want to use it more as a place for food preparation? (If so, you might want to look up portable kitchen islands or kitchen carts, which often come with butcherblock surfaces and are designed with storage and food prep in mind.)
Round Kitchen Table Ideas
The round kitchen table is a popular choice and comes in many sizes and styles
However, if you have a larger family, or do a lot of entertaining, you may want to hold out for a rectangular table with drop leaves that can be added.
Below, there are several round kitchen tables you can click on (these are available at Amazon). Some include matching dining room chairs, and some are just for the table (great if you already have chairs or aren't into the matchy-matchy style).
Should you buy a kitchen table online?
You can find a lot of great deals on the Internet, but is it smart to buy furniture online?
I love shopping online, especially when it comes to furniture. It takes forever to physically visit furniture stores, and they're huge, so it can take a long time to find what you're looking for when you do arrive. When it comes to something like a kitchen table, there may only be a few models for you to look at in each store. On the internet, you can click through thousands in a single evening!
But will you regret ordering a table you've never sat in?
If you're a smart shopper, you can eliminate most of the risks. Buy from well-known stores (such as Amazon), and get the measurements of the table before you decide on one. Take a tape measure into the kitchen, and make sure that table will fit well before you lay down your money.
Shipping is a consideration when you're ordering something as heavy as a table, but many online stores take this into account and discount their prices enough that it more than makes up for the cost of the shipping. Also, some stores have specials where they pay for the shipping themselves.
So, in short, buying a kitchen table online gives you a much larger variety of choices than you would have offline, and as long as you take a few precautions, you should have a good experience with ordering from an Internet shop.
Small Kitchen Table Sets
The perfect tables for small families or small kitchens (or both)
Consider drop leaf tables, or pub tables with just a couple of stools or high chairs.
Should your kitchen table have chairs or benches?
Which seating option makes more sense for your kitchen table?
When it comes to a kitchen table, the common seating options are chairs and benches. Chairs are most common, but benches are popular in rustic and country kitchen style sets and outdoor kitchen tables (AKA the picnic table). So, which seating choice is right for your family?
Obviously a bench won't work with a round table, so you need to be considering a rectangular table if you like the idea of benches. Benches really work well with larger families where you need to seat more than four people. Frequently two benches will seat six people comfortably.
As we mentioned, benches are more common in country kitchens or with rustic tables. You're less likely to see them with modern sets.
At the end of the day, though, it's really up to you. Which do you prefer? Benches or chairs?
And if you can't decide, you can throw the rules to the wind and choose a combination of both.
Corner Kitchen Table Ideas
A corner kitchen table takes up less space
A square or rectangular table can fit nicely into a corner and be pulled out to add more seating when needed.
You can also get "nook" tables that come with benches and chairs and are designed to fit into a corner and still provide seating for the whole family.
Glass Kitchen Table Ideas

Also, a glass kitchen table makes a space feel larger!
