Kite Landboarding

A lens dedicated to the sport of Kite Landboarding.

Recently, a Kitesurfing and Kite Landboarding competition was held on my local beach. Until that time I had seen the odd large kite hovering over the beach from a distance, but had never before seen the Kitelandboarding riders close up.

I'm glad that I eventually did, and hopefully you will get some sense of the fun that they and I had from these pictures taken that day.

What a great time it was, the sun, the sea and a fascinating event and an enthralling sport to watch.

What is Kite Landboarding?

type=textBasically, Kite Landboarding uses the power of the wind and a kite to enable you to be pulled along on a wheeled board.

It is a cross between surfing, windsurfing and kiting. You control a kite to move along, or if your skills allow, you can perform jump tricks.

The sport is a growing one attracting more and more participants every year, although it still has a way to go before it becomes as popular as kitesurfing.

How Did It All Begin?

A good question, and it seems that a number of people where probably working / playing with similar ideas around the same time during the 1980's and 1990's.
Credit seems to have gone to people like Manu Bertin and Laird Hamilton who began experimenting with a kite that had been developed some years earlier. They built strapped boards to be used with the kites.

Oops - nearly lost it!

It should be remembered that kiteboarding is an extreme sport. Like any extreme sport, it can be dangerous if you try things beyond your ability.

Choice of location for your Landboarding is crucial, you need plenty of open space free of unnecessary obstacles and if it comes with soft landing such as the beach - all the better.

What equipment is needed?

As for any extreme sport, safety is important.

An absolute minimum would be a helmet and an impact vest.

Generally, you would need:
Kite & lines, harness, bar, board, wet or dry suit.....don't forget the helmet and an impact vest...oh and quite a bit of nerve....and wind!

Apart from that you need to give yourself open space in which to practice your sport. The organisers of the event had thoughtfully cordoned off an area of the beach - just as well given the speed and antics some of these competitors got up to.

Landboarding Tricks

Tricks include flips, rotations, grabs, removing your feet from the board in the air. Tricks can also be performed on the ground such as wheelies.

Landboards are a little like large skateboards, but curved to give the rider greater control.

Landboards also vary to allow the rider the choice of greater speed or ability to perform tricks.

DEFINITELY going to give this a shot. Saw a kite-boarder go right over a jetty (pier/dock) in Moorea in the South Pacific. Incredible.
