Everything you could want to know about Kitesurfing and Kitesuring Kites

Controlling your Power Kite

If you are a beginner in power kiting, there are a number of different kitesurfing kite models and makes that will affect your control and maneuverability. Kite size is inversely proportional to wind speed; i.e. you'll want a smaller kite for windier days, a larger kite for less windy days. For beginners, it's a good idea to start with a small kite so you can hone your skills in more confined areas such as parks or the beach.

Of the different kite control systems available, each of these will affect your experience differently, in addition to kite size. Basic power kite configurations range come in two, three, four, five, and six line set ups. If a kite has fewer line controls, it is easier to set up and control. So it's a good idea to buy your first kite with only 2 or 3 kite lines. Kitesurfing kites with more strings will offer greater responsiveness and control, but at the same time will be much more difficult to maneuver for someone who is inexperienced. The number one rule in kiting is to always stay within your abilities! Never venture into conditions that you don't feel totally comfortable, or if you don't think your kite can handle it.

The most important things to be aware of when kiting are wind speed and wind direction. Before going out on any given day, you'll want to know inside and out the way wind will cause your individual kite to react. Regardless of your string configuration or kite size, wind balance is the most important aspect. Too much wind and you risk injury or damage to your equipment; too little wind and you won't be able to generate enough pull to take off. The "wind window" is a common term in kiting that explains the area and direction of the wind that allows your kite to generate pull. You'll want the ideal wind window to be about 100 degrees to either side to the direction of the prevailing wind to generate sufficient pull.
