Applique Felt Christmas Stockings

The stories of the exact origin of the Christmas stocking may vary from country to country. My favorite is that in some countries children filled their shoes or stockings with hay for Santa's reindeer and Santa returned the favor by leaving candy for the children. In America, the first settlers were European where much of our culture comes from. Santa was written about early in American history when Washington Irving wrote of St. Nicholas in 1809. In Clement C. Moore's poem. Twas the Night Before Christmas, written in 1823, Santa is a jovial fellow. The first verse states that "The stockings were hung by the chimney with care." Toward the end of the poem we read,

"He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.
