Kitsilano Beach History

Coffee and Sunset at Kits Beach

Kits Beach was originally known as Greer's Beach, named for Sam Greer, one of the first non-native settlers in the area. In 1882, Greer built his homestead on the site where the Watermark restaurant now sits, and challenged the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) for rights to the land. Unfortunately for Greer, the CPR won that battle and took the land in the 1890's.

Kitsilano Beach, as it is today, owes its existence to private citizens, who raised the money to purchase the land from the CPR, and to the Vancouver Park Board, who leased additional lots to create the extended park.

Kits Beach is the easternmost beach in the chain that curls around Vancouver's western coast. Southwest of Kits-traveling along the coast toward the University Endowment Lands and UBC--is Jericho Beach, Locarno Beach, Spainish Banks Beach, and Wreck Beach.

Tree Lined Streets- Cherry Blossoms

There are hundreds of different individual trees in front gardens, alleyways and public places

Vancouver, apart from the mountains and the ocean, is famous for its variety of trees, tree-lined streets and cherry blossoms in the spring. No area more so typifies this veritable tree heaven than Kitsilano. Walk down most of the streets in the neighbourhood and you will find yourself beneath one stunning canopy after another. As well as street plantings of the same species of tree, there are hundreds of different individual trees in front gardens, alleyways and public places. One of the most famous tree avenues in Vancouver is the Tulip trees on 10th Ave from Blenheim to Dunbar.

Kitsilano Neighbourhood
Kitsilano is a great neighbourhood within the bounds of Vancouver and is full of character and history.
THE Kits Blog
"Kitsilano: You gotta admit the area is hard to beat: the young'uns, the beaches, the hippy-yuppies AND there's a Lululemon store. What's not to like?

So come with me on this wild journey where I'll wax poetic on all that is obvious and obscure about Kitsilano!"

Vancouver Park Board - Kitsilano War Memorial Community Centre
One of Vancouver's oldest Community Centres, the Kitsilano War Memorial Community Centre was founded in 1951 as part of a grassroots movement to provide indoor public recreation services while commemorating those Vancouverites lost in the Second World War. Located on the western portion of beautiful Connaught Park (5.99 hectares) at Larch Street and West 12th Avenue, Kitsilano Community Centre also offers a full-size indoor ice rink open from October to May for public skating and lessons.

Relaxing on Kits Beach

Khatsahlanough

Named for Khatsahlanough, a Squamish Nation chief, Kitsilano's storied past includes being a hippie and counterculture haven in the 1960's and 70's and the home of both Greenpeace, founded in 1975, and the BC Green Party, founded in 1983. Today's Kits is a combination of the eco- and hippie-spirit of its past and 21st century gentrification, emblematized in the neighbourhood's organic markets, multicultural restaurants, and shops like Lululemon, Vancouver's famous yoga-wear chain, which opened its first store here in 1998. The Kits Pool

In our family the number one best pool in the world is Kitsilano. It's huge: 137.5 meters long (11 laps = 1 mile), so you don't have to do too many laps before you get a good workout. Although the pool is salt water, it's heated so you can last a long time before you start feeling cold. The kids love it, because it's like the beach--you can walk in at your toe nails and just play in an inch of water if you want to. Speaking of beach, it's a stone's throw away. Kitsilano beach is at the same location.

Kits Dining

Just 160 Chefs on five continents claim the coveted Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef status. In all of the eastern US there are but 12 Grand Chefs, of which Daniel Boulud is one. In western Canada there is but one Grand Chef, and he resides in Vancouver, presiding over the kitchen of the Grand Chef Relais & Châteaux class restaurant, Lumière - sister to and adjoining db Bistro Moderne.

Food Vancouver's Select Guide: Kitsilano

In this issue of "Food Vancouver's Select Guide", we will take you on a tour of Kitsilano. Vancouver is best known for its trendy, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods like Denman Street, Yaletown, South Granville and Downtown-Robson Street. Shops, boutiques and restaurants are within feet of one another and there is never a shortage of things to do; places to see or food to eat!

While none of these neighbourhoods disappoint, it seems that Kitsilano, or 'Kits" as the locals call it, is the place to beat when it comes to all of the above. With West 10th to the south, Cornwall Avenue to the north, Alma to the west and Granville to the east, Kitsilano has something to suit every mood, palette and budget.
