Kitsilano Beach History

Kits Beach was originally known as Greer's Beach, named for Sam Greer, one of the first non-native settlers in the area. In 1882, Greer built his homestead on the site where the Watermark restaurant now sits, and challenged the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) for rights to the land. Unfortunately for Greer, the CPR won that battle and took the land in the 1890's.

Kitsilano Beach, as it is today, owes its existence to private citizens, who raised the money to purchase the land from the CPR, and to the Vancouver Park Board, who leased additional lots to create the extended park.

Kits Beach is the easternmost beach in the chain that curls around Vancouver's western coast. Southwest of Kits-traveling along the coast toward the University Endowment Lands and UBC--is Jericho Beach, Locarno Beach, Spainish Banks Beach, and Wreck Beach.

So come with me on this wild journey where I'll wax poetic on all that is obvious and obscure about Kitsilano!"

Khatsahlanough

Named for Khatsahlanough, a Squamish Nation chief, Kitsilano's storied past includes being a hippie and counterculture haven in the 1960's and 70's and the home of both Greenpeace, founded in 1975, and the BC Green Party, founded in 1983.

Today's Kits is a combination of the eco- and hippie-spirit of its past and 21st century gentrification, emblematized in the neighbourhood's organic markets, multicultural restaurants, and shops like Lululemon, Vancouver's famous yoga-wear chain, which opened its first store here in 1998.

Storm Boy

Food Vancouver's Select Guide: Kitsilano

In this issue of "Food Vancouver's Select Guide", we will take you on a tour of Kitsilano. Vancouver is best known for its trendy, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods like Denman Street, Yaletown, South Granville and Downtown-Robson Street. Shops, boutiques and restaurants are within feet of one another and there is never a shortage of things to do; places to see or food to eat!

While none of these neighbourhoods disappoint, it seems that Kitsilano, or 'Kits" as the locals call it, is the place to beat when it comes to all of the above. With West 10th to the south, Cornwall Avenue to the north, Alma to the west and Granville to the east, Kitsilano has something to suit every mood, palette and budget.
