Kitty Talk: Meow, Purr or Swish Her Tail

Ranked #2,873 in Pets & Animals, #72,994 overall

Welcome to Kitty Talk!

Welcome to a lens that is filled with a growing storage of facts and information about about the way that cats communicate and the way we communicate with our feline friends. Kitty Talk looks at the way a cat communicates with it's body as well as it's voice. Observe when your cat is active and when it is napping.

Come share your experiences with cat communication. The more we share our successes and failures with trying to talk with our furry companions the better we will become at knowing just what our cats are trying to say.

Nezumi the Communicating Kitten

Nezumi and Tsunami 2010

Our Two Kitties who love to Talk

Nezumi, my black tabby-and-white kitten, communicates 24/7, even when we don't know it. Of course, not literally, because we have to sleep, and cats are much too smart to talk to themselves.

When I get home from school, Nezumi runs to the door, tail up, whiskers flying, purr in her throat, and shoves her head into my hand. She's so adorable!

She also loves to talk, especially when she wants something done.

After a while, you can learn to distinguish what she wants from the tone and where she calls from.

Her favorite message to get across is "Open the door, please?" But most doors are closed for a reason, so instead I grab her favorite toy and distract her by throwing it across our huge living room. She's so full of energy, she'll bring it back in seconds!

Cats vs Dogs

Which is better, a cat or a dog?

Which pet is easier to communicate with, a cat or dog?

Dogs

heber says:

dogs,because they sit when they are
told

jp1978 says:

Dogs. Cats do what they want!

Pukeko says:

I am more of a fish person in general - but between dogs and cats, I would pick dogs

Upon-Request says:

I'm a dog person, but having lived with several roommates now that all own cats, I can truly say cats are pretty easy to communicate with -- they just don't mind as well as dogs! ;)

Cats

Paul W. says:

A cat is better because it will be your best friend . It will play when you want and love you no matter what... I have 3 cats and i LOVETHEM ALL 3....

penny says:

cats are much easier, you can leave water and food out for days and as long as they have a clean litter box, you can go away for 4 days or so. I know my last kitty would rather be left alone than have a stranger in the house. She lived to be 20 yrs. old. I miss her.

exotickitten731 says:

CATS CATS CATS ! Dogs dont know what they want most of the time -_- lol

says:

I have to say cat. Mine talks back to me when I talk to him.

Harryjthomas says:

Here three kittens talk in body language.
Left: "Don't scare me, I'm warning you!"
Center: "You look funny!"
Right: "I'm sleepy."

I Love Little Pussy

I love little pussy,
Her coat is so warm;
And if I don't hurt her,
She'll do me no harm.

So I'll not pull her tail,
Nor drive her away;
But pussy and I
Very gently will play.

I'll pat little pussy,
And then she will purr;
And thus show her thanks for
My kindness to her.

I'll not pinch her ears,
Nor tread on her paws;
Lest it should provoke her
To use her sharp claws!

She shall sit by my side,
And I'll give her some food;
And pussy will love me
Because I am good.

These three easily remind me of Tsunami (right) our newest kitten, Nezumi (left) who is almost always in that position, and Lionheart (bottom) who is a stray male living in our neighborhood. Tsunami likes pouncing, Nezumi likes being worshipped, and Lionheart likes serenading Nezumi and sleeping in our backyard and our neighbors'. Tsunami is easily bored and likes meowing out challenges left and right. Nezumi is the quiet type, but she is constantly scolding Tsunami. Lionheart is a loud serenader, but a little tone-deaf, and Nezumi heckles him a lot. Every time she hears him yowl her ears go back and she glares at him.

    I really wish I could understand mine. So far I think I figured out the "You are not paying attention to me" and "I require more scratching" tones.

    Great lens with nice pics. As a kid we had a big red tom who was the sweetest cat ever. If I want a cat it has to be a red tom again.

    Very cute lens! Our cats talk to us all of the time too! Our tortoise shell will actually go turn the timer button of the oven on to alert us that she needs our attention...usually to be fed.

    One time my little kittens were taking a nap, and I went over with my video camera and said, "Okay, which one of you is the cutest?" They all poked their little heads up and said, "Mee! Mee! Mee!" LOL. Anyway, you have a good lens here!

    We just got back from Vermont. Our kitty, Nasumi, road all the way up in the car and back. She talked about the huge trucks on the road, told us how content she was to be with us and complained about not being able to get to the birds flying past the window. She certainly knows how to communicate.

    ALL three of my cats talk to my husband and I all of the time! I think it's because we have had all of them since they were very small, and we constantly talk to them. It's so funny because they definitely show their personalities through the way that they talk to us. It's one of the best parts of my day - communicating with my kitties. :) 5 stars!
  • mbrownauthor May 3, 2009 @ 11:26 am | delete
    I have 8 cats. Some are "talkers" others are more quiet. I have one who talks every time something is said to her. I have some that follow me around like dogs. Some are very obedient, others not so much. They are fun! 5*s.

    My sister-in-law has this calico cat I would love to take home. But she would be a chew toy for my dog. Seriously, I do like cats too.

    I have always had cats in my home. There communication is unique and very specific. They are extremely intelligent and really will let you know if they approve or disapprove.

    We are cat lovers in this household! We have two cats, and the communicate in different ways. Maxie is more physical, and Oreo is more verbal. We love them both.
