Mind Their Business

"Mind your business" are words you hear from a well-meaning parent,
the kindergarten teacher or a disgruntled associate. You can almost sense the "or else."

To challenge this advice, a well-known safety net, would seem absurd.

But what if when you mind their business" you do not simply meddle in private matters but you become concerned about the plight of local business owners?
A developed sense of awareness could lead you to supply a missing resource.

However, why should you take care of a business in your neighborhood ? Who wins?
.
Let's see:
Take the concern for one needy local farmer and the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) trend.
Membership dues from your food-purchasing club provide a farmer the benefit of ready overhead funds for seeds and equipment .
A decrease in delivery distance brings less pollution to your community and fresher goods to your table.
In this situation, everyone wins.

The Greatest Salesman in the World" by Og Mandino

Hafid, a young camel boy has intentions to become a salesman. He fails his first assignment.
He's unsuccessful in selling a precious robe after several days. Instead he gives it to a cold, shivering child. He returns to his mentor Pathos, without money or a business deal.

Yet, mysteriously, he receives a reward for his thoughtfulness.
A star appears in the sky. The needy child had been a very special child.
Soon after, Hafid receives a rare manual from his dying mentor, Pathos.

Although he's on his death-bed, Pathos minds Hafid's business.
This mentor is concerned about the young man's intention to become a successful salesman.

Hafid recognizes the value of this unusual gift,
The ten scrolls of selling" becomes the guide that helps the amateur salesman.
He seizes the opportunity to increase his awareness by following the directions inside each scroll, every day.
Hafid begins to believe in himself and in the work that he's doing.

After the completion of this exercise, he becomes the greatest salesman in the world.
Hafid wins in a roundabout fashion from minding the business of a needy child.

The Benefit of Minding Their Business

    Business-to-Business Support

Local Business flourishes when merchants take care of each other.

Here are the suggestions that were offered in this lens for you, the local business owner:

  • Purchase your fellow merchant's products, by adopting the Community Supported Agriculture pattern.
  • Offer your services as a mentor or a micro-lender.

  • Provide a business tool to increase that merchant's business volume.

  • Supply a safety net for that business, if possible.

  • The main goal of this article is to promote business-to-business support.
The entrepreneur who takes care of his neighbor's business, to the extent of supplying a missing resource, will get the support to win, in the end.
