Energy-Efficient Building Systems

Energy spent for powering buildings accounts for 40% ($320 billion) of the total U.S. energy expenditure. It is estimated that substantial savings of energy can be earned by using existing hardware, energy-efficiency modeling tools and algorithms (such as "Energy Plus") for retrofit of old and the design of new buildings. But much more can be achieved with modern analysis and control tools based on dynamic systems and control theory methodology, when these are used to optimize the performance of the building system. UCSB highlights the research, commercial, and government laboratory perspectives on the problem of energy-efficient retrofit and design of building systems. [10/2008] [Science] [Show ID: 14827]

Why Energy Efficient Environment Friendly House?

Klimahaus - CasaClima - Clima house

According to EEBS

Effective green building can lead to:

1. Reduced operating costs by increasing productivity and using less energy and water.

2. Improved public and occupant health due to improved indoor air quality.

3. Reduced environmental impacts by reducing and/or eliminating greenhouse gas emissions, use of our natural resources, recyclability, on-site and off-site waste, and construction time.

In the United States buildings account for:

* Between 40% and 49% of total energy use
* 25% of total water consumption
* 70% of total electricity consumption
* 38% of total carbon dioxide emissions

According to Wikipedia.org

In the developed world, energy-conservation has grown in importance in house-design. Housing produces a major proportion of carbon emissions (30% of the total in the UK, for example).

Development of a number of low-energy building types and techniques continues. They include the zero-energy house, the passive solar house, superinsulated and houses built to the Passivhaus standard.

KlimaHaus Construction

Constructing Climatic House

Climatic House is the crucial challenge for all climate engineers. The room and energy requirements go far beyond the scope of conventional systems.

Energy efficient house / building design is a location dependent. The local environment must be considered when selecting appropriate home/building construction design strategies.

Casa Clima i.e Klimahaus building focuses on:

1. Living comfortably with low energy costs and protecting the environment.

2. Home compatible to nature are pleasant and extremely comfortable.

All this requirement in home is possible if it environment friendly construction systems planned carefully and engineer know how to use advanced technologies.

Rubner is a pioneer in this business sector as it has built the first CasaClima Home

Home Energy Efficient Design (HEED) software

Created by UCLA University

Home Energy Efficient Design (HEED) software allows designers and builders to develop simple models of house designs to compare.

The program begins by asking six simple questions to determine the parameters of the house design, including house type, size, and location.

Using this basic information, the program creates two scenarios: the first a basic code-compliant house and the second a more energy-efficient house.

The user can then modify the design and perform energy performance calculations within the program, seeing how design decisions affect energy performance.

The program is set up to work only for locations in California.

Passive House

The term passive house (Passivhaus in German) refers to the rigorous, voluntary, Passivhaus standard for energy efficiency in buildings. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling.Definition of Passive House A similar standard, MINERGIE-P, is used in Switzerland. Minergie-Standard The standard is not confined only to residential properties; several office buildings, schools, kindergartens and a supermarket have also been constructed to the standard. Passive design is not the attachment or supplement of architectural design, but an integrated design process with the architectural design.Yan Ji and Stellios Plainiotis (2006): Design for Sustainability. Beijing: China Architecture and Building Press. ISBN 7-112-08390-7 Although it is mostly applied to new buildings, it has also been used for refurbishments.

Estimates on the number of passive houses around the world range from 15,000 to 20,000. The vast majority have been built in German-speaking countries or Scandinavia.
