What knives do you own and what do YOU think of them?

From the lens Fixed Blade Military Survival Knives for the Knife Hunter.

The one I carry most is a Remington 3.5" folding lock blade. My other blade is mostly handmade and too large to carry anywhere outside a dense forest.

Very nice list of survival knives, btw.

Great info, I liked your lens.

I am like many and have more survival / military type knives than I will ever need. I learned at a very early age that only buy a quality knife that you can bet your life on. I have a few Bucks, Gerber, SOG, Kershaw, KaBar, several old German mades and two that were made for me. If things fall apart and I take to the wildneress I will take at least two with me and I really believe that any of the ones I have would be a good choice for a survivlal situation. Buy a quality knife dont go for the cheap 9.95 hollow handle special because it will not hold up. Take your knife out in the back or woods and give it a real work out. Better to find out it will fail while at home than when you need to depend on it. You are putting your life in your own hands by your choice. Most of the time you get quality and you will be ok.

Got a Rat RC-4 about 2 years ago. That thing stays sharp.

Good lens. My favorite survival knife is the Becker BK2. That Rat RC-4 is a thing of beauty too!

Your tip about the Rambo knife is interesting. I've come across quite a few knives (not Rambo) that are like that.

Have had great luck with the SOG Seal PUP, SOG Trident and the BearGrylls (full size) Folder
  • Forester7 Aug 18, 2011 @ 8:17 pm | delete
This is a great review and covers some of my favourite fixed-blade knives: Ka-Bar, SOG Seal Pup Elite, Gerber LMF II/Bear Grylls ULK. There are a couple left off though:
    - Cold Steal Recon Scout: Great knife for survival. A bit pricey but will handle almost any task thrown at it and without serrations is better suited to battoning than say a Gerber LMF II.
    - Cold Steel SRK: Like the Scout Recon but smaller and cheaper, a great knife.
    - SOG Tech Bowie: Had to mention this due to it's history, and it looks cool!

Glad you included the Ka-Bar. Had mine for over 20 years, for my money it's the best knife ever made, bar none.
  • mtnmom5 Jun 9, 2011 @ 12:27 pm | delete
Wow, great site and info on knives.

I'm surprised Busse and (the more affordable...sometimes) Swamp Rat aren't mentioned here. Tough as the devil's nails and the best warranty out there. SRKW Ratmandu gets my vote for survival knife. I believe the Ratmandu is the knife that eventually took down Godzilla.

My knife collection consists of a simple Schrade Old-Timer 2-blade pocket variety; an Imperial Schrade Stainless Steel Single Blade Pocket Knife w/Accessories (a gift from one of my sons); a Victorinox Adventurer Swiss Army pocket knife; and a Ka-Bar USMC Plain Edge. I love all of my knives because each ones serves their own unique purpose. Whenever I'm outdoors, either hunting, hiking, or camping, I bring along at least 3 of the 4, mainly because...well...one never knows when a situation or situations may arise where the practical uses of one, or more, are completely impractical for the given situation. I have to admit, however, that rarely do I ever go anywhere outdoors without the Ka-Bar. When it comes to dependability, it works great. The Ka-Bar is easy to use in restricted spaces, very durable, and although it's not as sexy and sleek as some of the newer knives on the market, it has never let me down. What else can one ask for?

Recently purchased the Cold Steel Military Classic. As we're pretty much snowed-in, haven't had an opportunity to get out with it. My chief concern is falling into the old, first scratch trap. This knife is just, well, too beautiful ... a work of art. The classic Randall 1 design in state of art steel and micarta. If there's even a custom knife that's better finished, I haven't handled one. However, I'm determined to carry and use it, as that was my intent. I have "beater" knifes including the old Air Force pilot knife, and also the short, AF Survival School machete from my military days. They are inexpensive, work well, and if lost or destroyed ... no worry.

Nice lens with a lot of cool knives. Thanks for sharing

There are several knives to choose from and I commend this article for giving out some choices. On my preference, the best knife that any guy must have is the cold steel fgx.
You can never go wrong with that type of knife.

I recently found a knife with a wooden handle engraved R1 Arsenal Dept - D1, however I cannot find anthing on the internet about anything similiar. It looks antique. If anyone knows anything about what this is I would greatly appreciate a reply. Thanks!

I have the Buck 119 Special. Thanks for the lens! I enjoyed reading about the various types of knives available in today's market.

I've been using the Ka-Bar D2 Extreme Fighting knife for a while now and it's taken a lot of abuse without complaint. I love the serrated edge on it, though I admit I have no idea how I'm going to sharpen it when it finally wears down. The knife holds an edge forever.

I recently purchased a Rat 5, but haven't had a chance to take it in the woods yet. I bought it after taking one of Randall's survival courses and seeing first-hand how well the knife held up (two other guys in the group were using one, probably because of Jeff Randall). It is definitely heavier than the Ka-Bar, so I'm expecting good things.

I don't own any as my Dad won't let me have one yet but I will in the future.

Hi Maria, First of all, please tell your brother thank you for his service and may God keep him safe. In response to your questions the Gerber LMF II is an excellent knife, but I will tell you it is a little on the heavy side. I do own this knife and I usually keep it strapped to my pack, however, it is comfortable to wear on your belt it just takes some getting used to.

Infra-red resistance makes it harder to see with night vision equipment. Usually not a big deal for most people but in the military (depending on their particular deployment) a lot of the equipment they wear has infra-red resistance.

Whatever you decide on (please come back and post what you bought and how he liked it) I would suggest you buy something at least six inches long. Just in case you didn't get a chance, read SFC Dillard Johnson's story by following the link towards the top of this page. Also check out www.72hoursurvival.com for more info.

    I hope that helps,
    Marlin

    Question;
My brother just graduated from Ranger school and is heading up to Alaska where the army's currently commissioning him (and then off to Afghanistan). I'd like to get him a suitable, usable and economical gift that he can use both in the north, and possibly in the desert. Your research has definitely got me thinking that the Foliage Green LMF II ASEK would be best?

What is infra-red resistant anyway? Is that necessary for him?

It's not about price, really, just what would be the best. I really appreciate your input on this!!

I've had many of knives, and the KA BAR is a good knife. However, my personal favorite is the Cold Steel Military Classic. It has a 7" blade made of laminated steel and holds an edge like no other. I've chipped many of blades before, but to date, not this one. I've had other Cold Steel knives with this San Mai blade and have never, ever experienced a problem with them. It is also ergonomically perfect for me, and I have large hands. SOG bowie is also a great knife, but I prefer the Cold Steel. And the leather sheath is finely crafted and durable.

Hi, nice little lens you put together. I use a Ka-bar mostly. I like the gerbers.
  • ohiowolf813 Oct 1, 2008 @ 7:07 am | delete
Another great knife in my opinion is the Gerber Patriot. It is full tang with polymer type handle and comes with a hard sheath. That is if you can find one. I had one while I was in the military and it definately seen some use.

    Hi
I own the rambo knife and it is a great knife. Although, not a fixed blade I wouldn't go as far as telling people to "stay away" from this knife. This is a great knife which I also have in my collection which is a strong well weighted knife, that is durable and has lasted me many years. The features including the compass are very capable of getting me out of a jam. And also can be purchased at a great price. Fair assessment however.

Hey! Thanks for the info on the Gerber LMF II. I tried to buy it online and they were out of stock, but if they hadn't been, I'd have ended up with the wrong thing! Great info!!

Growing up in rural Minnesota, hunting in the fall was a given. My ex-military brothers prefered the KA BAR but the others prefered the Buck Knife. Me, I was just along for the ride.
    Great lens.
