Knights Templars: Military Friars Who So Strangely Blended The Character Of The Monk With That Of The Soldier

The Knights Templar trace their origin back to shortly after the First Crusade.

A French nobleman , Hugues de Payens, collected eight of his knight relatives including Godfrey de Saint-Omer, and began the Order to protect pilgrims on their journey to visit Holy Places.

On approaching King Baldwin II of Jerusalem, they were allowed to set up headquarters on the southeastern side of the Temple Mount. This was the site of biblical King Solomon's Temple, the Order took the name "The Poor Knights of the Temple of King Solomon", which later became abbreviated to "Knights Templar".

The two most distinguished members of the fraternity were Hugh de Payens and Geoffrey de St. Aldemar, or St. Omer, two valiant soldiers of the cross, who had fought with great credit and renown at the siege of Jerusalem.

Hugh de Payens was chosen by the knights to be the superior of the new religious and military society, by the title of " The Master of the Temple ;" and he has, consequently, generally been called the founder of the order.

As Grand Master, De Payens led the Order for almost twenty years until his death, helping to establish the Order's foundations as an important and influential international military and financial institution. The Templars soon became, in fact, the most distinguished of the Christian warriors.

The Order of the Templars consisted of three distinct classes, knights, chaplains, and service-brethren.

The Templar Reputation Grows

The name and reputation of the Knights Templars speedily spread throughout Europe, and various illustrious pilgrims from the far west aspired to become members of the holy fraternity.

Many illustrious knights of the best families in Europe aspired to the habit and the vows, but however exalted their rank, they were not received within the bosom of the fraternity until they had proved themselves by their conduct worthy of such a fellowship.

An astonishing enthusiasm was developed throughout Christendom on behalf of the Templars.Princes, nobles, sovereigns and their subjects, vied with each other in the gifts and benefits they bestowed upon them.

Many illustrious persons on their deathbeds took the vows, that they might be buried in the habit of the order ; and sovereigns, quitting the government of their kingdoms, enrolled themselves amongst the holy fraternity, and bequeathed even their dominions to the Master and the brethren of the Temple.

Branches were frequently formed, and houses, many of them as well fortified as castles, were built in the Holy Land and in nearly all the countries of Europe.

The Order's efforts were helped substantially by the patronage of Bernard of Clairvaux, the leading churchman of the time, and a nephew of one of the original nine knights.

He championed their mission and defended the idea of a military religious order by appealing to the long-held Christian theory of just war, which legitimated "taking up the sword" to defend the innocent and the Church from violent attack. By so doing, Bernard legitimised the Templars, who became the first "warrior monks" of the Western world.

By the direction of Pope Honorius, the council appointed them a white mantle as their peculiar dress, to which Pope Eugenius some years
afterwards added a red cross on the breast-the symbol of martyrdom.Their banner was of the black and white stripe, called, in old French, Bauseant the word became their war-cry.

The chivalry of St. John vied with them, it is true, in prowess and valour, but they do not occupy the same space in the History of the Crusades.

Jealously Of Kings

Two hundred years later, and the Templars had become an entirely different association. Their numbers had increased greatly because they admitted as partial members many persons who simply wished to make sure of protection.

In the early days of the order they had lived upon charity and had chosen for their seal a representation of two knights riding upon one horse to indicate poverty ; but now they had become enormously wealthy.

More than one king became jealous of their power, and were exasperated because the Church forbade taxes on them.

Falsely Accused

Stories were spread by their enemies that instead of fighting with the Turks they were ready to make any sort of treaty that would secure their own property in the Holy Land.

King Philip of France was already deeply in debt to the Templars from his war with the English and decided to seize upon the rumors for his own purposes accusing them falsely of heresy and immorality.

He began pressuring the Church to take action against the Order, as a way of freeing himself from his debts.

Under the threat of military action Pope Clement V, based in France, issued the papal bull Pastoralis Praeeminentiae which instructed all Christian monarchs in Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets.

Philip ordered de Molay and scores of French Templars to be simultaneously arrested. Some of them were tortured until they admitted that the charges were true, and fifty-four were burned at the stake.

Grand Master Jacques de Molay, who had confessed under torture, retracted his statement. His associate Geoffrey de Charney, Preceptor of Normandy, followed de Molay's example and insisted on his innocence. Both men were declared guilty of being relapsed heretics, and they were sentenced to burn alive at the stake.

Other countries followed the example of France. Further threats forced the Pope to agree to disband the Order, citing the public scandal that had been generated by the confessions.

At the Council of Vienne in 1312, he issued a series of papal bulls, including Vox in excelso, which officially dissolved the Order.

Both Grand Master Jacques de Molay and Geoffrey de Charney were burnt alive at the stake in Paris on March 18, 1314.

With the last of the Order's leaders gone, the remaining Templars around Europe were either arrested and tried under the Papal investigation, or absorbed into other military orders such as the Knights Hospitaller.

Part of their property was given to the Hospitallers, but by far the larger part of it went to the rulers of the lands in which it was situated.
