If you are new to knitting or crocheting your baby gifts, I've listed links to free patterns and books below for beginners that might be of help.There are also many tutorials on Youtube to consider. I am a very visual learner and watching someone do a stitch or pattern slowly really helps me to get it.
If you visit the different yarn brands websites, they usually have lots of free knit and crochet patterns to wade through.
Remember the local library as well is a great resource for books and possibly videos with tutorials to borrow to knit and crochet your baby gifts this year.

When I think of quick and easy gifts to knit or crochet for a baby, I usually gravitate to baby blankets. There are many free patterns on the internet for crochet and knitting as well as tunisian/afghan stitching. Some are more complex than others, but you can usually find one that suites your skill level quite easily.

I learned about this wonderful way of crochet/knitting recently and I've fallen in love with it! Feel free to check out these free patterns and download to give them a try.
I've only found a few patterns online for baby blankets in the tunisian stitch but I'll keep searching and will add to this list as I find them!
You can apply the instructions in the videos below and make up your own sizes as I have done. Usually if you start with an even number of stitches/chains then you will be fine.

Tunisian Afghan Stitch Video
There are several videos on Youtube about how to do different variations of the Tunisian stitch. One thing to keep in mind is that the simple Tunisian stitch will have a tendency to curl. If that doesn't matter to your pattern then go for it. If so, the next video after this one will show you another way to work the Tunisian stitch to help prevent the curl!
