Knit One Below: One Stitch, Many Fabrics

This is one of the most important books on my knitting shelf. I was initially inspired to purchase this book because the sweater on the cover was stunning. When you Knit One Below (K1B), you don't knit into the stitch on the needle as you ordinary would, but you knit into the stitch just below. In one row, you would K1, K1B across the row. In the next, you would K1B, K1 across, resulting in 1 visible row per 2 rows knit.

My only disappointment with this book is that the yarn used in the sample would cost over $100... My favorite Men's sweater would cost around $200 for the featured yarn! Since I've begun dying yarn on my own, I think I could achieve similar looks with custom made colors, at a reduced cost (hopefully!). The exact yarn contributes greatly to the finished project, but this technique is so versatile I believe you can use it to elevate any project.

Despite my complaint about the pricing - I L O V E this book. The technique is so unique, and creates such a versatile fabric. I was so inspired that I went and designed two patterns that used the K1B technique, and am planning to do more in the future. The K1B technique allows only involves carrying one strand at a time across a row, but you achieve a stranded knit look. You can create vertical stripes with ease, without having to worry about floats. The instructions are beautifully laid out, as certain common stitches have to be tweaked to accommodate this technique. Pick up a copy for yourself and your friends!
