Knit a Cap, Save a Life

Save the Children is asking knitters and crocheters to knit or crochet one baby cap by December 31, 2008 and then to write a personal note to the President-elect asking him to lead the way to save millions of babies globally.

Knit One Save One is a joint project from Save the Children and the Warm Up America! Foundation. These two organizations are encouraging people who knit and crochet (and those who want to learn how to knit and crochet) to make hats for newborns. The Knit One, Save One Project is a great way to introduce children to knitting, crocheting and activism.

Four million babies die each year within the first month of life in developing countries. A cap is a simple solution, which can provide warmth to newborn babies can help improve their survival.

Background Information on Newborn Survival

Research shows that 60 percent of the 4 million newborn deaths that occur each year could be prevented if mothers and children in poor countries had access to a simple package of health measures.

This low-cost, effective package includes antibiotics to fight infections, immunizations against tetanus, training for birth attendants, education on breastfeeding and basic care for newborns such as keeping a baby - even those born in hot climates - warm with a knit cap.

America's leaders could save millions of newborn lives by increasing international assistance for programs that offer these affordable, life-saving tools.

It's a simple and easy way to help, and sends a message of love and support to moms and babies
around the world

Predictions about the Knit One Save One Campaign

In 2007 Save the Children recruited knitters through the Internet to knit and crochet 280,000 caps for infants.

What do you think the response will be for 2008?

SquidooLibris predicts:

I predict there will be a lot of children saved through this campaign.

Being a mother, I know how vulnerable a child is during their first few hours and days of life.

So when I was told that something as simple as a knit cap can help save a baby's life by keeping him dry and warm, I was moved to act.

Encouraging New Knitters

The Knit One Save One project sponsored by Save the Children has inspired some Hollywood artists like Mischa Barton to pick up knitting for the first time.

"It's great that you can help change a baby's life in just an hour -- or more like a few hours if you're just beginning to knit like me," said Mischa Barton.

Knit One, Save One is a great way to introduce children to knitting and to being a craftivist, a craft person who is giving back.

Getting Started

To get started you need three things:
    1. Yarn that would be comfortable for a baby to touch.
    2. Knitting needles or a crochet hook.
    3. A Pattern.
Knitters and crocheters can make hats using any pattern they wish, but keep in mind that because the babies that Save the Children serves are often low birth-weight, the caps should be on the smaller side.

A circumference of 9 to 11 inches is ideal. Any smooth, washable yarn can be used.

Will you be knitting or crocheting a cap?

  • daoine Sep 16, 2010 @ 2:27 am | delete
Oh what a lovely idea! And so good to see all the celebrities who are knitters. I think this is worth doing every year.

Kirsti, your lenses are always educational but also so very well written and designed. They are a pleasure to read and keep me hooked. Thank you for writing about this important topic, and thank you for submitting it to the Building Ordinary group. I'm starting a new category there for it and others that may come: Protecting our Children.
  • cappuccino136 Nov 3, 2008 @ 4:09 pm | delete
What a great way to help and a wonderful lens. Thanks for the idea and the inspiration. After I'm done with my afghan and another Christmas project I'll have to come back and check out how to participate.
