The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns: Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes & Gauges (Interweave)
When you want to start designing, this is a great place to start.
Shawls and Scarves: The Best of Knitter's Magazine (Best of Knitter's Magazine series)
I've found this to be most useful - educational articles and great patterns. Make sure to look up the errata, though.
