Knitted Art

Knitted Art is More Than Just Craft

There's a phenomenon getting around called Knitted Art. Never heard of it? Then let me introduce you.

I loved knitting when I was younger but admit I sometimes found it a little boring. I am one of those people who tends to flit from one activity to another without any true dedication to one particular form. I wish I could claim a level of initiative and creativity to really break out of the mold but in some ways I find I am also one of those people who follows instructions.

But there is an element out there, a faction if you like, of artists whose medium of choice is yarn and their tools of the trade are needles. And they are creating truly inspiring works, full of colour and form and often on an amazing scale.

On this page, I have gathered together some of the more interesting, innovative and sometimes amazing creations using knitting (and the occasional crochet) as the creative method.

Guerrilla Knitting

Knitted Art in the Dark

Also known as 'Yarn Bombing', 'Grafitti Knitting' and 'Yarnstorming' is a kind or street art which is believed to have started in the US but has quickly gained in popularity worldwide. Considered to be non-permanent, it can easliy be removed if necessary. Often appearing overnight to surprise locals the next day, in some places they are actually welcomed and encouraged as part of a festival or event.

Examples of guerilla knitting include tree and lamp-post wrapping, adornment of public art and sculpture and additions to any street object or urban furniture which is a fixed or permanent structure.

Knitted Tree

Colourful Knitted Art in the Park

Tree Cosy

"Tree Cozy is a tree - a natural object representing masculinity and strength -covered with a crocheted cozy - an emphatically handmade blanket representing femininity and comfort. On the most obvious level, it is a piece of clothing, personifying the tree and keeping it cozy and colorful throughout the year, enhancing the beauty of nature. On another, the brightly colored crocheted cozy wraps the tree in personal and cultural nostalgia evoking memories of bygone times and places when life was good. On yet another level, the cozy softens the strong tree form while also emphasizing it. It simultaneously caresses and encases the tree. The cozy covering the tree fluctuates between comforting blanket and suffocating cover-up; it conceals as much as it protects; it hides as much as it reveals. Tree Cozy was on display from 2005 through 2008 in Cleveland Heights, OH in front of Cleveland Heights City Hall."

Pink Knitted Tank

Knitted Art not War

Pink Tank

This 'Protest in Pink' is constructed from more than 4,000 six inch pink knitted squares. A tank used in World War II is covered in the squares which have stitched together to cloak the vehicle. This protest which was held in front of the Nikolaj Contemporary Art Center in the centre of Copenhagen, was created by Marianne Joergensen with contributions from around 1,000 volunteers from all over the world. It was intended as a gentle protest against the war in Iraq. As Marianne says; "Unsimilar to a war, knitting signals home, care, closeness and time for reflection."

Knitting Art

Knitting ArtAs some knitters craft mittens and sweaters, others find themselves taking flight into the realm of art. Some become true fiber artists, creating exhibition-quality quilts and sweaters and shawls, yarn mobiles and sculptures and gigantic abstract installations. An exploration of art knitting, this book profiles eighteen of the most prominent and intriguing practitioners of this craft-turned-art. Karen Searle, herself a recognized fiber artist, examines the works and inspirations of each of these knit artists
