Knitting is Relaxing
Knitting is a wonderful and relaxing activity for me. I like to knit sweaters, caps and scarves and toys for my children . I learned to knit from my mother who is a real "Queen of Knitting". She is knitting very beautiful and very fast. We often made " knitting contests" and she always won.
I like to knit sweaters with Intarsia motif , we know this kind of motif as Norwegian motif, and today I design the models I'd like to knit.
Making different combination of motifs, planning and designing the model and finally knitting the sweater with this model it's a great and exciting thing.
Knitting it's not a complicated thing, though it's good if we know few basic notions. Maybe the tips I want to describe it will look very simple, but I think they have a great importance because a simple miscalculation can cause problems .
From Store to First Stitches on Needle
After you find the model you want to knit and you will have to decide what color of yarn you will use to knit the sweater. Now , we will go to the store to buy the yarn we need for knitting.
Tip 1. If you want to knit a sweater with Intarsia motif, choose a yarn which is not fluffy. During knitting the fluffs can stick together and you will have to break the thread and tie the thread again in order to continue your work.

Two different threads.
Tip 2. Always buy more yarn ! If you'll need 600 g of yarn for a sweater, buy one more role because you might needed it later.
Tip 3. Choose your needles !
No, this is not a duel but you will have to choose the proper knitting needles . Look at the yarn's label. Usually the manufacturer indicates the number of needles that you have to use at knitting.

I must admit that I seldom follow the manufacturer's indications. I usually use thinner needles that is indicated to knit because in this way your work will be denser and will stretch harder after several washes.
Tip 4. If you will use thinner needles that is indicated on label you will need a bigger quantity of yarn in order to finish your work.
Another Knitting Tips
Now, we have yarn and we chose the needles. It's time to begin the work. Put the proper number of stitches on needle ( be sure that the number of stitches fits with the size of what you want to knit).
Tip 5. Before you start to knit the model , you will have to calculate how many motifs will be in your work .
For Example: I am knitting a cap for my daughter and I have 156 stitches on needle. I'd like to knit in the cap a snowflake motif and cable motifs/patterns. For the snowflake I need 21 stitches and for the cable motif I need 6 stitches.
Let's see what we obtain if I divide the 156 stitches on paper.

So, I can knit four snowflakes and three cable motifs in my work.

And this is how my work looks .

My work ,closer .
Tip 6. When I knit a cable motif/pattern I use a circular needle to permute the stitches; in this way it's easier for me to knit the stitches from needle after they are permuted.

Tips for Intarsia Knitting
Tip 7. When you knit Intarsia you need one or more colors in order to make the motifs. Be sure that every thread has the same thickness. If one of the thread is thinner, the motif will not be nice.

Tip 8. You will not have holes in your work if you will twist the yarns.

Tip 9. When you knit Intarsia the thread on back of your work must not be tensioned.

Tip 10. Try to choose a simple motif if you are knitting Intarsia for the first time.

Knitting Intarsia Motifs
A Customer's Opinion from Amazon
I love this little book! It's the perfect size and weight for the knitting bag. PLUS, it is just jam-packed with knitting info, all in color photos, and all very clearly written. I learned to knit from Sharon Turner's other Visually book, and I'm so happy to have this lightweight handy book to toss in my carry-out knitting bag. As with her other knitting books, the instructions and the photos that go with them are written and arranged such that even the most inexperienced beginner can understand what to do. On top of containing everything you need to know on the go (plus a lot more), this pocket-size book also contains tons of fun tips that you would never have thought of yourself. A++++ keep the knitting books coming!

A Customer's Review from Amazon
I've been knitting simple projects for years, but I was ready to move to the next level by taking on more challenging projects. The Visual Quick Tips Knitting book has great color pictures, good tips, and really simple instructions. I learned a new way to cast on called,long-tail cast on, that has a beautiful, clean edge - I never knew that there was a better way! There are so many instructions for doing things like cable stitches, multiple increases, yarn overs, making pompoms, buttonholes, and even fancy borders like a curly ruffle. I also like the Stitch Pattern section that shows a sample of a knitted work (like the Seed Stitch) with instructions for how to knit it. It's a very fun little book I carry in my knitting bag -- even fun for a knitter with some experience!

Knitting is a method by which thread or yarn may be turned into cloth. Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other. The active stitches are held on a needle until another loop can be passed through them.
Knitting may be done by hand or by machine. By hand, there are numerous styles and methods. Flat knitting, which can be done on two straight needles or a circular needle, produces a length of cloth, while circular knitting, which is done on circular or double-pointed needles, produces a seamless tube.
Different yarns and knitting needles may be used to achieve different end products by giving the final piece a different colour, texture, weight, or integrity. Using needles of varying sharpness and thickness as well as different varieties of yarn adds to the effect. Read more in Wikipedia

- Loved the snowflake design. I have tried knitting, but found it quite difficult, which was disappointing because I so admire handknit pieces. Perhaps it has something to do with being left-handed. Anyway, I switched to crochet and concentrate on stuffed animals, afghans and potholders, etc., because then it doesn't matter if I create 'backwards' (left-handed)...hee, hee. I MAY someday try knitting again - perhaps a simple design on a square potholder. Sweaters are WAY beyond my ability. :)

- I love to crochet, but so far I've only knitted socks. I love Addi Turbo needles. Knitting is one of those things that are pretty easy to learn the basics of, but you can spend a lifetime learning more and more and more things to do.
