How to make Intersia/Fair Isle knitting graphs with excel

How to use Microsoft excel (or similar programs) as knitting graph paper to create fairisle or intersia knitting patterns.

Knitting graph paper

Because knitting stitches are wider then they are tall, Knitting graph paper should accommodate this and the cells should be rectangular and not square.

Open excel and choose all the cells (by pressing Ctrl+A) and go to Format> Column> width, and change the width to 0.8, then color the borders black

Now you should have a spreadsheet that looks like knitting graph paper.

Pick a color you like and start filling in cells. Go crazy, HAVE FUN!

I made a tutorial on this topic, with screenshots from excel.

Part 1: Setting up the Chart (http://www.chemknits.com/2010/01/how-to-make-knitting-chart-in-excel_9394.html)
Part 2: Drawing the Chart (http://www.chemknits.com/2010/01/how-to-make-knitting-chart-in-excel_25.html)
Part 3: saving and sharing your chart. http://www.chemknits.com/2010/01/how-to-make-knitting-chart-in-excel.html

I also chose a heart in the drawing the chart phase, so great minds obviously think alike!

Chris, to make the lines darker every 10 stitches, you highlight the cells and use the thick border option. You have to make selections of every 10 sts or so for this to work.

This is a wonderful idea, but how do you make the lines darker for every 10 sts? I am doing reversable knitting. My designs are my own and I would very much like to get them into the computer. Thanks for your help.
