When I get interested in an advanced knitting technique, I start collecting links and  tutorials. I'll assemble some of my best resources here for easy reference.

Currently, I'm trying to solve some problems with short row heels on my knitted socks.

I've had trouble with unintentional holes in my toe-up, short row heel socks. This is a collection of links to tutorials for the many short row techniques.

Alison's tutorial and free ankle sock pattern use the backwards yarnover method.
Spindlitis Scrap Socks
This free pattern has photo tutorials for all key sock parts. Also uses PG-R's backwards yarnover method.

Knit (and Purl) Enroachment Short Rows 

This technique closes short row gaps by lifting the stitch below the next stitch and knitting (or purling) together with the next stitch.

HipKnitism's Knit Encroachment Method
Big photos, but a bit tough to read.

The counterpart purl technique.
Toe Up Sock Pattern
This free pattern uses the HipKnitism encroachment method for the short rows.
Unwrapped Short Rows
This photo tutorial appears to describe a similar encroachment method.

Japanese Short Rows - tutorial and descriptions 

Grab a safety pin or a removable, pin-type stitch marker. This is widely regarded as the least visible method.
