Pre-partum Depression Rule #1: Never Wear an Empire-Waisted Dress to a Baby Shower
If you've been asked the question "When are you going to have a baby?" so many times that you feel as though your uterus is starring in a new reality TV show, this hilarious, insightful book is for you.
Carrie Friedman shares her daily struggles with what she calls her "pre-partum depression" from baby lust to panic, and everything in between. Fending off the "dreaded question" from everyone, including her yoga teacher, and navigating the minefield of toddler birthday parties, as well as creating her own faux baby registry under an assumed name, Carrie Friedman captures the process of deciding to have a baby with humor and smarts.
Whether you're uncertain, ambivalent, or scared about having kids, Friedman offers a dose of comfort and a bellyful of laughs in this witty, insightful book.
Carrie Friedman is a freelance writer who lives in Los Angeles with her husband. She graduated from Boston College in 1999 and has since done postgraduate work in writing at UCLA. Carrie has been published in Newsweek, on several websites, and currently writes a column for Mad As Hell Club called "Discount Therapy."
"A very honest, personal, and humorous exploration of one woman's pre- pregnancy journey." --Christie Mellor author of Three-Martini Playdate
"Carrie Friedman is an absolute delight!" -- Jamie Cat Callan, author of French Women Don't Sleep Alone: Pleasurable Secrets to Finding Love
"Pregnant Pause is insightful, touching and incredibly funny. Carrie Friedman finally gives a voice to the non-pregnant and persecuted! If you're looking for refuge from the pressure of prying questions, pet substitution and the call of your biological clock, her sharp wit is a hilarious diversion." -- Adrianne Frost, author of I Hate Other People's Kids

Review
I've been a big fan of Carrie Friedman since her Newsweek article a few years ago. I think it was the first time anyone had talked about societal pressures on women to have kids - if not ever, than at least in such a funny way. I just finished her book and it did not disappoint, expounding on all of the thoughts and feelings she's had on her pre-partum journey - reading this book was like talking with a trusted (and really funny) friend!

Hands off my Belly
And other attitude maternity shirts

Why do people think the belly of a pregnant woman = public property and can not keep their hands off the belly of "the preggo princess". It seems that many think it is OK to touch the belly of all pregnant ladies they meet. Put an end to this using humor (if you do not like them to do so...)
From PreggoPrincess. Also available on buttons, tote bag and many other shirts.

Hands off My Belly
Small kids can say the funniest things to a pregnant woman. Things that can bring a smile on her face no matter how tired she is. Kids can find it difficult to understand that the belly contains a baby and may want to touch it. In most cases this is only fun, but when adults you do not even know reaches out to touch your belly when you stand in the line at the mall or when you visit the cinema, park or ... then it can be realy annoying. Use humor to remind them that you prefer that they
keep their hands away from your big belly.

Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care
According to writer and editor Block (Our Bodies, Ourselves), "the United States has the most intense and widespread medical management of birth" in the world, and yet "ranks near the bottom among industrialized countries in maternal and infant mortality." Block shows how, in transforming childbirth into a business, hospitals have turned "procedures and devices developed for the treatment of abnormality" into routine practice, performed for no reason than "speeding up and ordering an unpredictable...process"; for instance, the U.S. cesarean section rate tripled in the 1970s, and has doubled since then. Block looks into a growing contingent of parents-to-be exploring alternatives to the hospital-and the attendant likelihood of medical intervention-by seeking out birthing centers and options for home-birth. Unfortunately, obstacles to these alternatives remain considerable-laws across the U.S. criminalizing or severely restricting the practice of midwifery have led the trained care providers to practice underground in many states-while tort reform has done next to nothing to lower malpractice insurance rates or improve hospital birthing policies. This provocative, highly readable expose raises questions of great consequence for anyone planning to have a baby in U.S., as well as those interested or involved in women's health care.

Review
"A gripping expose... Provocative and hotly controversial analysis of a side of reproductive rights feminism seems to have forgot." -- Kirkus Reviews, (Starred Review) 5/15/07
"A stirring discussion of reproductive rights, informed consent, and the rights of the mother vs. the fetus... Recommended." -- Library Journal, 5/15/07
"The book is loaded with interviews, statistics and...some quietly deft storytelling." -- Chicago Reader, 6/29/07
"This is a worthwhile book for anyone who cares about reforming our health-care system--right from the start." -- Kansas City Star, 10/02/07
"[Block] really gets that maternity care is a woman's issue that all people should care about, not just mothers, and she has no agenda through a birth experience or professional work in maternity care. Pushed shines a spotlight on maternity care and asks important questions about the standard practices in America." -- BOLD Book Club, October 2007
