Does That Dog Come with an Owner's Manual?
A former co-worker of mine decided to get a dog for their oldest son. Neither he nor his wife had ever owned a pet before. They were inexperience. After a month went by, I asked about their dog. My co-worker replied, "We brought him to the Human Society a couple of weeks ago. He was shedding too much and we were tired of vacuuming."
If he had read the owner's manual first, would they have brought that poor dog into their home to begin with? If they had done their research, my co-worker would have had an idea on if a pet of any kind was right for them.
I am no Dog Whisperer or breeder. With the exception of the short time living in an apartment, pets have always been a part of my life. None of my pets came with an owner's manual. There were times that I wish they did.
Even so, we have taken the time to research and train ourselves so that we can understand and be better pet owners.
Presently, I have a German Shepherd name Buddy. He has been in our life since August 2003. The knowledge that we have gained over the years as pet owners has helped in the proper training of our Shepherd to be part of the family. And yes...he has trained us as well.

Debbie Ray's Passion for German Shepherds
Why she created this ebook
I have had the unique experience to correspond with Debbie Ray, the Author of
"Your Total German Shepherd Dog, A Pet Owner's Guide" This is Debbie's response to me.
German Shepherds are my passion and have been for as long as I can remember. I got my first German Shepherd, a white one, when I was around 10 or so. Since that time I have owned blacks, black and tans, black and reds, long coated and standard coats. Every kind but a sable till this point. Having been owned by, lived with and bred these dogs for well over 30 years I can honestly tell you that the German Shepherd Dog is the perfect dog breed for me and this is the very reason I wanted to create this book: to share my knowledge, expertise and passion with other German Shepherd fanciers, and with people wanting to learn more about the breed and to clear up any misinformation about the breed that many people have.
I am now working on a second edition as well complete with a paper book version that I hope to have done by April 2009.

German Shepherds
Alsatian or German Shepherd
Alsatian is another name for German Shepherd Dog which was invented during World War I, using Alsatian (Alsace being a region disputed by France and Germany) as a euphemism for German. It is commonly used in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and the Commonwealth of Nations.
Help My Dog is Chewing up His Toys!
Even the Pet Whisperer doesn't have a clear answer to stop your dog from chewing. All dogs have a need to chew. If they are puppies they have a need to chew. It feels good to chew when they are loosing their baby teeth. If they are adult dogs, they tend to chew out of stress or boredom. If they are not played with enough, they will chew up their toys. They could have issues about being home alone. The dog will turn to his or her toys to chew up or worse.
When I catch my dog chewing, I give a stern, "No, don't chew." I'm not saying it will work all the time. But it has worked for me. If that doesn't work, take the toys away for a short time. Then slowly bring it back to your dog and say, "Don't chew!" Dogs are smart animals. They do know what you are talking about. Your pet needs to know that you are the Alpha dog.
Another thing to do, is when you say, "No" touch you dog on the side of his or her body. The dog will respond to this and look at you.
When you are gone for a long period of time, replace your dog's toys with rawhide and long marrow bones. Once your dog can be trusted, you can start leaving the toys out when you are gone. Note: there are harder toys labeled chew toys. They do last longer.
Obedience Training is one of the best things you can do for your dog. Total German Shepherd offers that and more. It doesn't just have to be for a German Shepherd.

- We are still totally enjoying our Joey. After rescuing him, we found he has some hip displasia with some trouble on the left side on occasion. He is on meds for this and otherwise, is happy and healthy. We decided the hip problem is probably why he had been passed five times...such a shame. They were the losers because he is remarkably sweet, never meets a stranger (which in our close neighborhood is a real plus), loves children and other dogs, minds beautifully, no allergies so far, beautiful coat and loves to go to the groomer. At four years old, we couldn't ask for a better pet...everyone who meets him falls in love with him in minutes! They are wonderful animals!!

- German Sheppies or "Sheppies!" as I love to call them are the best dogs in the world. They make the funniest and goofiest sounds and are just the best all around dog to have even if they shed a lot! I used to own dogs in the past until I had to move to an apt. where no dogs were allowed.

- I'm living in an apartment right now and can't have a dog. Buddy looks like a honey...but then, I have a soft heart for the German Shepherd as my favorite breed and certainly would love to have another one in my life one day sooner than later. I did an eye roll about your friends that couldn't take all the vacuuming and totally agree that studying about various breeds and their specific needs is important before bringing one home. Created with love...and blessed. Congratulations on receiving a front page feature!
