Got The Bill Collector Blues?

Getting behind on your bills is tough.

Dealing with bill collectors is even worse.

There are a number of ways to make life a little less stressful, as you try to pay your debt off. There's no need to have those pesky phone calls disturbing you day and night. Here are some tips I have learned about my rights (and yours!) :)

I've Had These Rights Since When?

Good Golly...Never Knew That!

The fair debt collections act was passed in 1977. This piece of legislation was passed to protect citizens rights in regards to debt collection and collection practices.

Did you know...

1. Debt collectors may only call you between the hours of 8am & 9pm, unless other times have been agreed upon by you.

2. Debt collectors are not allowed to call you at work, if they have been informed that your work does not allow it.

3. Debt collectors are not allowed to harass, opress or verbally abuse you or anyone else in your family they contact.

4. Debt collectors are required to provide you written notification of the debt owed, to whom and how much, within 5 business days of their first contact with you.

The Value Of Retaining A Lawyer

..Because We All Could Use Some Representation!

Perhaps the best rule invoked within the fair debt collections act, is this one:

"If you have an attorney, the debt collector must contact the attorney, rather than you."

Isn't that great! O.K., I know...most of us don't have an attorney available to take care of every Tom, Dick & Harry debt collector that comes around. Wouldn't it be great if there was an ultra-affordable way to retain an attorney on a regular basis for these types of daily issues?

I'd Love To Have My Own Attorney

Isn't That Like $200 per Hour To Start?

Yikes!

When a friend of mine first asked me if I had any interest in having my own lawyer, I laughed at him!

The truth is that most lawyers will charge you an easy $100.00 just for a simple 15-20 minute consult. If they are doing any type of significant reviewing or documentation on your behalf, you can expect to pay at least $200.00 per hour to start.

Once my buddy got me calmed down from laughing, he introduced me to the concept of Legal Insurance. We have so many other things in life that we insure. We have insurance for cars, homes, boats, health, life, pets and valuables. But there's something many people don't insure...

Their Civil Rights!

When I learned that I could have 24/7 insurance for my rights as a citizen of this great country, and for less than half the cost of my daily cup of coffee, I knew I had to get it. Not only have I been able to use it with debt collectors, but I've also used it in disputes with my landlord, during traffic stops and with my local car dealership, when they refused to honor my warranty.
