Koalas might look like a bear but actually they are classified under as "marsupials", a type of mammal in which is the female typically has a pouch to rear its young up to the early infancy.

The word Koala comes from Daruk gula (also known as Dharug or Iyora as an extinct Australian Aboriginal language widely spoken in the region of Sydney, New South Wales.

The scientific name of the koala's genus, Phascolarctos, is derived from Greek phaskolos "pouch" and arktos "bear". Its species name, cinereus, is Latin and means "ash-coloured".
