When it comes to koi fish care, there are certain things that you must have to take care of your fish. I know a lot of people have a lot of questions. So between this lense and my blog, I hope that I can answer as many of your questions as I can.

Proper Filtration.

Proper filtration is very essential to koi fish care. Without proper filtration, your fish pond will have problems. There are those that believe that adding a waterfall to your pond will eliminate whatever filtration problems you have. This is not true. First of all, most people cannot afford to add a waterfall. And for those that can, all the waterfall does is help with aeration! Aeration will help the fish and the pond with a continuous supply of oxygen. It does nothing for filtration.

Different varieties of food.

When you feed your koi a wide variety of food, you are essentially giving them a well balanced diet. This diet of different foods will give your fish a balanced diet, and the opposite positive effect will be your koi exhibiting brighter colors. Regretably, the most expensive foods will make your koi show the brightest colors.

I know that this is bad news, especially in this economy. But in the long run, it will all be worth it. So I say, bite the bullet, buy the expensive food, and enjoy the beautiful display that your fish will put on!

Heater.

Having a heater will be an invaluable addition to your koi pond. In the winter months, a heater will make sure that your pond does not completely freeze over. And in turn, this will ensure that your pond has some kind of oxygenation in the winter.

How many koi fish are too many?

This is one of the most hotly debated questions about koi fish care! Some people say 2 fish for every 100 gallons. Some say 3 koi fish for every 100 gallons. Do you know what I say? It all depends on two things. What are those two things?

The size of your pond and how your fish react. If you have a 200 gallon fish pond with 5 fish and you want to add a couple more, then by all means, do so! But do this with a watchful eye. A 200 gallon pond might sound like a huge space, but it's not. It's only when you get into the thousands and thousands of gallons do you have PLENTY of space for your koi. Koi ifsh, like any fish, need their space. And when you have too many koi in a small pond, they are soaking up all of the oxygen from each other. (That's when you start to see them come up to the top of the water for air .) This can really stress your fish.

So put the extra koi in your pond. See how the other fish react to the new occupants. Notice if any of your fish get stressed and take the appropriate action. Personally, I think that having 6 or 7 in a koi pond is okay. But your fish are going to be the real judges of the situation.
