Kokopeli - Character of Southwest U.S. Tribal Lore
Ranked #4,247 in Culture & Society, #91,984 overall
He's the funky little Native American dude you see all over the American Southwest
Kokopeli (known also as "Kokopelli" in American English--for linguistics basis of this, see some of my other lenses)--a hunchbacked little fellow with a few feathers in his cap and playing a flute. Boogying to some ancient tune. Found mostly in Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico petroglyphs--the ancient art carved onto old sandstone walls or on the volcanic escarpments or painted on kiva walls. There are all sorts of mysterious tales surrounding this fellow. Seems that he was somewhat of a "ladies man"...and now his image represents "fun and romantic" appeal to the gals of the Southwest.

Books have been written about him. Archeological treatises have been developed on him. And souvenir shops at airports and hotels and other tourist attractions have turned him into a souvenir icon of the Southwest.
Tony Hillerman has written many mystery novels set in the Southwest United States--including the "Four Corners" states of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. His books deal a lot with southwestern American Indian/Native American culture and anthropology and archeology and sometimes mention the Kokopelli character.

- I have always loved Kokopeli art. My mom does too. She has a huge iron Kokopeli wall decoration that is really nice. Great lens! Thanks for sharing.

- I don't have a southwestern house, but the little trickster Kokopelli dances everywhere around my home. He reminds me that life is a dance.
