Chair design

Some years ago I came across pictures in a German magazine that really opened my eyes. One shows a chair woven from a white fabric around a steel frame and I think it looks magnificent.  A real inspiration. I made a few enquires but nothing came of it. I even tried Koloron So if it was you or somebody you know I would you pleased to hear.

How I feel about Chairs

Chairs are my Art

Today I have a number of chairs I have made along similar lines and I have exhibited them in local art shows and always receive a number of compliments and questions about the way I work. A good reason to share.

The fabric I use is called Koloron, it is a cross between paper and fabric. It is really nice to handle and strong so it works well for seats. Koloron also doesn't fray so I can use scissors where I need without having to worry about hemming edges so it fast too. The more complicated bit comes with the frame because it needs to be strong and well made. Steel and welding is the only really successful way to introduce the shapes and the structure I look for. Fortunately I work with an art college and these things become easy.

The frame is the heart of he design and once complete the fun starts. I wrap the complete frame with strips of Koloron because it helps securing the weave later on. I find taking long lengths of Koloron about 8 inches wide they plat well into 2 inch squares that provide all the strength necessary. I work across the seat in both directions and tuck the ends onto the covered frame and glue with PVA. The joins are strong and last well, if the chair is to be used continuously I stitch and glue. Now the bit I haven't shown you, colouring.

Koloron will take almost any colouring medium, I use acrylic followed by a polyurethane spray when I want a really shiny finish. Creativity can be so exciting and Koloron opens up every possibility imaginable and gives me the opportunity to exhibit something really different every time. Along with chairs I also used this art fabric to dress tables for special occasions like parties and weddings. I have a single picture to thank for my inspiration so who ever you are thank you.
