Kona Hawaii Dream Vacation

Kona is the essence of Hawaii.  Small Pristine beaches and abundant snorkeling opportunities make Kona a favorite destination for island lovers.  Whether it's the sun, surf or island time that lures you to Hawaii.  Kona is sure not to disappoint.

Let's Go Snorkeling!!!

A few tips...

Snorkeling is great fun. If you have never tried, please promise yourself that you will.

I am not an expert, however, these are a few things I wish I had known the first time I went to "Snorkel Bob's" to rent snorkel gear.

Get the snorkel with a purge valve...it allows the ocean water to automatically drain out i.e. when a wave washes over you, your companion splashes you or you do a less than Olympic style swim move and get water in it all by yourself! If you do not get the purge valve kind the water goes right in your mouth through the tube you were trying to breathe out of.

This type of snorkel usually cost a little extra in rental or purchase fees. This extra cost will make your snorkeling experience much more enjoyable.

Make sure your mask fits you properly. Yes, it takes a little extra time, but again your snorkel time will be much more fun. Move all of your hair out of the way and adjust the straps to fit tightly against your face without making deep creases. Try on different ones to find the best fit. You do not want to be all poised to take your sea turtle or parrot fish picture and suddenly have salt water in your eyes!

Do you wear prescription eye glasses? See if you can rent a mask to match your prescription. This might make snorkeling easier for you without the worry or glasses or contacts. You want to see the pretty fish and coral as clearly as possible.

Fins...there are basically two kinds...some with straps and some without! The full foot kind fit more like a shoe and are generally lighter and more flexible. The advantage of the adjustable strap kind is you can wear neoprene booties to protect your feet from jagged coral or sharp objects in the sand. Try on both kinds and see what appeals to you.

Get one of those laminated cards with the fish pictures and names to help identify all the cool fish to see. These are great to identify the fish in your photos when you get home. You can also put them in your scrapbook or vacation treasures box.

Keep reading...the information continues in the next module. 2500 words was not enough!

Snorkeling info continued...

Choose a safe place to snorkel. Being swept out to sea could ruin your vacation! Check with your hotel, local dive shops and fellow travelers for the best spots. Read your guide book for a list of great snorkel beaches. Some beaches have life guards on duty. Obey the signs, many beaches have signs stating what part of the beach is safe and what part is not safe. Now that you are afraid of the water, let's talk about the good part...

Start in the shallow water...do not jump into forty feet of water to start. Stand in waist deep water, Put on your mask and snorkel, Place your face in the water and breathe. Is your mask adjusted properly or is water pouring in? Does the snorkel feel right? Do you trust that you can breathe the snorkel and stop holding your breath?

Give yourself a little time. All new skills take time to master. After you comfortable with the mask and snorkel, put on your fins. Float in water you can stand up in. When that feels natural, swim around a bit in the shallows. When you feel like a "fish in water" go snorkeling!

The underwater world offers so many spectacular views. Enjoy your new skill and all the beauty the ocean has to offer. Melissa :-)

Things to Pack...

2-3 Swimsuits (It's no fun putting on a wet sand filled suit! You could ruin one on rough coral, etc. Shopping is fun in Hawaii, but not on the best surf day!)

Sunscreen (If you have sensitive skin, try it out at home first, a skin rash on vacation is not fun)

Sunglasses

Sun Hat/Baseball Cap (Even the part in your hair can burn if you're not careful, besides, you look cute in hats!)

Journal (If for no other reason, so you can write down all the directions, dinner times, boat launchings, etc.)

Camera (film or card)

Disposable underwater cameras (great for snorkeling)

Comfortable Sandles (Wear around the house)

Tennis Shoes and Cool Socks (You may want to go for a run on the beach or a hike)

Swim Shorts (If you like to snorkel, your buns may need a little sun break)

Calling card (May be a little easier and less expensive to phone home)

Postage Stamps (Who wants to stand in line at the post office in Paradise to mail all those great postcards?)

Attractive cool casual wear (You may want to look a little nicer than beachwear going out to dinner or dancing!)

Beach Bag (You may not want your nice rolling Samsonite in the sand with your entire wardrobe.)

Great Swimsuit Deals on Ebay...

Don't wait until you go on your trip to buy a swim suit! I have done this and it has not worked out. Yes, you can find tons of cheaply made almost no fabric ones...however...finding one that looks great on you takes time. And my time in Paradise is limited, I want to spend it at the beach not shopping for an overpriced suit that I don't feel good about...just my two cents...

Points of Interest

Hulihee Palace--This two story New England style mansion was built by John Adams Kuakine, governor of Hawaii. Built in the 1800's with lava, coral, ohi'a timber. It is on Alli Drive in Kailua-Kona near the boat harbor. Admission charged by the Daughters of Hawaii who now operate it as a museum. Beautiful koa wood furnishings and artifacts can be seen inside. You can always just walk along the beach behind the structure, too.

SPF Clothing for Children

Must Have for Taking Kids to the Beach

These types of clothing are worth the investment. Keeping sunscreen on all body parts while little ones come in and out the water, dry off with towels and smear themselves with sand is a challenge. Of course, those with thin hair and fair skin are particularly challenging.

My son was not doing well with the constant sunscreen slathering. He got a sunburn even though we were using SPF 50 sunblock on him. The sunburn made him grumpy and uncomfortable. It mademe feel guilty! We got him a long sleeve SPF shirt and a SPF bucket hat. No more sunburn and being made to sit in a hot tent Mom made with hotel sheets and chairs which he was not crazy about!

Buy them ahead of time so you can get the right sizes and not traispe all over the place looking for them like I was instead of sitting on the beach!

Even if you are not planning on going right away...

You can always check prices to start saving!

Check different time frames. The off season is much less expensive. Sometimes there are even discounts for a couple of weeks before the off season. If traveling with a few folks check out house rentals along with condos and hotels for the best rates. Also, check package deals against the price of booking the airfare, accomodations and car rental seperately.

Pediatrician Recommendation for Kailua-Kona

It's not the best thing that can happen in paradise...but, it does...my little girl got sick. I did not know who to pick out the yellow pages for my angel. Her ears hurt, she stopped eating and slept all day. (Very out of character) I got lucky and picked Dr Robert Laird, pediatrician. The receptionist was nice and I was given an appointment the same morning.

Dr Laird was very polite and diagnosed her with ear infections on a Monday. Told me to call and let them know how she was doing. I called on Friday because she was not getting better. The nurse answered and was very nice and again I was given an appt. the same day. Dr Laird ordered blood work for her after her exam.

The clinic I was sent to for the blood test was reasonably priced and two sweet people gave my daughter her first blood draw in the arm. It turned out to be a pleasant experience for her instead of a nightmarish one! So thankful for those two women, who have saved her from fear the next time she needs one done. I asked for a butterfly needle and they were already prepared to use this type. (Butterfly needles are much less painful and more successful in my opinion, so ask for them yourself!)

Dr Laird called me personally to discuss her bloodwork. I have to repeat that...he called me personally to discuss my daughter's bloodwork and continued care. (SO Impressed)

My daughter did get well and I am so thankful for Dr Laird for being there to care for her.

Pharmacy Recommendation for Kailua-Kona

I asked for a reccomendation to a pharmacy in Kona and was given Mina Pharmacy. I used them twice and found them to be very helpful, polite and timely. It was very clean which is important to me for this type of business.

They have ice cream and cute gift items along with neccesities to browse while you wait.

So, if you need a drug store while in Paradise, you might want to give them a try...

Hi, I was born and raised in Kona. Nice perspective of my home. Just one tiny little thing. Some of your photos are from Kailua on Oahu, not Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. You might what to correct your information. Chinamen's Hat in the background is the giveaway.
