The History and Progress of Kona Coffee Beans

Cultural traditions are as important to the future as they are to the past, whether it be drink, food or clothing, for as these long held traditions are passed down to many generations, new ones are most certainly added. One such tradition, began in 1828 by a young man of only 19 years of age named Samuel Ruggles, who arrived unexpectedly one day on the island of Kona, Hawaii. He brought with him the best arabica coffee beans ever tasted. These were planted in the rich, black volcanic earth, where they flourished, hence the name kona coffee beans was born.

By 1842, a tax was implemented on all coffee beans brought into Hawaii to prevent contamination and disease.

By the 1880's different nationalities of people arrived on the island, most being from China and Japan. These individuals were provided with 5 acres of land each and proved they were worth more than their weight in gold. It is directly due to their hard work and persistence that Kona coffee has been and still is today the most valuable and best tasting coffee in the world today.

Throughout the years, droughts, plagues, and the depression, threatened to destroy kona coffee fields...

yet even with a change of ownership, the kona coffee beans on the island thrived. By the late 50's over 5,000 more acres the bright red cherry trees were planted. Because this flavorful, robust coffee is only grown on the island of Kona, it can be quite expensive, especially when it takes over 100 lbs of cherry beans to make 12 lbs of coffee. Due to its rarity and value, many companies offer discount brands, and some others such as Colombian, Jamaican and Italian coffees contain a blend of 10% kona to 90% other high quality coffees. The flavor of the combination tastes very rich and it makes no difference in the taste whether the beans are added before or after roasting. It does however make it much more affordable to more of the population.

Kona coffee is served in so many different ways...

One popular way is with cinnamon and shaved dark, semi sweet chocolate on top with cream or without. Millstone coffees sell organic, flavored, decaffeinated, and blends, which are immediately packed to preserve freshness and flavor. If you've walked down the coffee aisle at the store and were hit by the wonderful aroma of fresh coffee beans, you were probably enjoying the scent of Millstone coffee. Green mountain coffee is an organically grown fair trade coffee company created in 1841 which strongly believes in earth conservation. No matter which company or flavor you prefer, always remember to begin your day with a great tasting cup of coffee.
