Wait! What On Earth Is A Dog KONG?

A Volksvagen Van, a German Shepherd and a guy named Joe

Classic Kong Dog ToysIn the early Seventies, a guy named Joe Markham had a problem with his German Shepherd dog Fritz (now *that's* as German a name as they come). The former police dog had the unhealthy habit of chewing on rocks, which was really a bad idea for his teeth. One day, while working on his Volkswagen Van, Joe discovered that a yummy, chewy piece of suspension he had pulled from the van finally convinced Fritz to give up his rock habit. In fact, Fritz was so crazy about his new toy that his owner Joe came up with the idea to develop a whole line of dog toys known as the KONG.

Meet The Inventor Of KONG

Mr. Joe Markham

He's not just a brilliant inventor and businessman, he also seems to be a really nice guy. In this clip, Mr. Markham shows us his entire line of Dog KONG toys, and some specialty Kongs as well.

The Evolution Of KONG

From Car Part To Interactive Dog Toy

Black Extreme KONGSome 30 years later, the classic KONG toys come in 4 different rubber types to best match the specific needs of individual dogs or life stages:

  • Red, for average chewers
  • Pink or Blue for puppies
  • Purple, for senior dogs
  • Black, for extreme chewers

The Classic Kong looks a bit like a snowman with 3 balls stacked on top of each other. The toy is hollow, and this is where the plot thickens: You can stuff a yummy treat into the toy which is almost guaranteed to drive every pup and hound *nuts*!

Now, more than 30 years after Fritz invented the first dog KONG, the company has expanded their range of toys to include KONG balls, tug toys, plush dog toys, dental chews and other interactive toys and accessories. Cats now have their own line of KONGS, and even horses and birds have been reported playing with them. There's no way telling where this madness will stop.

The Classic Kong Dog Toy

To provide your dog with the best possible KONG experience (and to save yourself from aggravation as well) it's important to get the right kind of KONG toy for your chewer. Depending on such factors as age, size and tenacity of your pet there's a specific KONG to best meet the needs of each individual.

We started, like most folks I guess, with the classic KONG. It's held up really well and has since been supplemented by various additions. These are the classic dog KONGs for puppies to seniors, they each come in different sizes as well.

Specialty KONG Toys for Dogs

PhotobucketThere are now a myriad of dog KONGs, not to mention those for cats, ferrets, horses etc. But, since we're focused on dog toys only, here's just a small glimpse of product varieties offered by the KONG Company. Some are for stuffing and chewing, some for playing catch, tug-of-war or chasing. And there are new products constantly being added to make sure we never get bored. w00f!

In my experience Kongs are great ! My gorgeous Goldie adored his Kongs and I got quite creative stuffing them! Kept him occupied for ages and he would carry it around with him too. We never went anywhere without it.

Our dogs chew Kongs to bits in less than an hour. We just give them the classic dog toy: a mateless sock tied in a knot.

Daisy started out with a cute, pink puppy Kong but has graduated to black - she's a chewer! She loves her Kong bone and brings us to it whenever she's bored or wants a treat. In other words, many times a day! I need to get more creative with the stuffing and challenge her more. Kongs rock!

We just got a Kong Stuff-A-Ball and I think my dogs have met their match. My dogs are moderate chewers and although it drives them nuts to see and smell the treat they can't really get to it. A "black" chewer like Daisy might conquer it though. :)
