Kopek The Destroyer - Causes of indigestion for a wolfy puppy

How I met Kopek the Destroyer and his owner Phil Owens

"Kopek the Destroyer" is a book of true tales about a wolfy puppy whose destructive adventures both frustrate and amuse his owner.
Kopek was the dog of the title, and I met up with him when he was fully grown.

I'd heard about the movie 'Marley and Me' and I thought, "How could a dog be so naughty? It must be a bit of the old Hollywood magic!"

Then one day I heard about Phil Owens, who had bought a British Inuit puppy called Kopek, and had kept a diary about his new dog's escapades.

After months of recounting Kopek's shenanigans to his friends, Phil decided to publish the best stories in a book -

"Kopek the Destroyer , Causes of Indigestion for a wolfy puppy"

I contacted the author and was invited to visit.

By then Kopek was a fully grown, large animal, as was his companion Malli - a Malamute / German Shepherd cross.

Being a small person, and knowing about Kopek's past behaviour, I admit I was nervous as I crossed the threshold.

However, I was pleasantly surprised at how well behaved and friendly they both were.
Malli stretched out on the floor in the middle of the room, ignoring me, but Kopek seemed to take a shine to me.

While Phil found me a copy of the book, and added his signature, Kopek kept prodding my hand with his nose so that I would stroke him.
He seemed to like it, but leaned heavily against me, so I said "SIT !" in my best Barbara Woodhouse voice.

Kopek promptly sat - on my foot!

When it was time to leave, both dogs came to the front door with me. I gave them both a farewell pat, and Kopek leaned against me one more time.
It was hard to picture this sweet, friendly wolfy dog being so destructive as a puppy, but judging by the size of him, I have no doubt that he was capable of being a home-wrecker!

The best line ever:

Why do dogs like to eat everything they shouldn't?

British Inuit Dogs

Kopek is a British Inuit Dog

Kopek 1 year oldKopek's breed of British Inuit was started twenty years ago - these dogs are pure bred and very expensive.
The breed is a mix of Malamute, Husky, German Shepherd and Czech Wolf Dog.

Kopek is a beautiful dog, but British Inuits may be unsuitable as a pet in some households.
The owner should be experienced and active, as trying to fill the puppy's days with exercise and training can exhaust you both mentally and physically.

Phil Owens, the author of this book, should be commended for his extraordinary patience.
In lesser hands this story could have had an unhappy conclusion, and shows that you should think long and hard before taking on a dog like this as a family pet.

The photo at the top of this page shows Kopek as a cute and adorable puppy.
Here we see him at the age of one year.

Kopek soon revealed his chewing tendencies - his dog toys were quickly destroyed.
Then he turned his attention to household things - anything that wasn't nailed down.

He particularly loved paper, which he could shred until it resembled snow.

He also turned his attention to the seats in the car.

Kopek all grown-up

Kopek grown-upThis book contains so many stories, but I won't spoil it for you by telling you more.

However, I can reveal that, in true Hollywood fashion, the story of Phil and Kopek has a happy ending.

Phil's love for his pet shines through and Kopek has become a handsome, proud and loyal adult dog.

Choosing a suitable pet

Words of wisdom from Phil

type=textPhil ends his book with a warning to anyone looking to acquire a dog like Kopek.

"Owning a dog like Kopek, and that includes any of the 'Northern' type breeds, is a lot of hard work. They are not a breed for the novice dog owner.

While having a fantastic temperament, they are all stubborn and single-minded; training one is a real challenge.

Despite how cute they look as puppies, please do your research before embarking on the life of destruction you will almost certainly have.

The rescue centres are full of these types of dogs, where novice owners just can't keep up with them.

However, if you do decide to get one, then you will find they have so much to give back.

For me they are the perfect dogs, and despite, or maybe because of, his antics I wouldn't swap Kopek for any other animal."

A great book, showing that it's important to choose an animal compatible with your own abilities and lifestyle, before committing to a dog.

Sorry, not my cup of tea.
