Korean Indie Rock: A Primer on K-Indie Music
Ranked #1,348 in Music, #36,191 overall
Discover hot new indie music by K-indie bands and artists.
If you're into indie rock and are open to listening to alternative music by foreign acts, I highly recommend that you give K-Indie -- short for Korean Indie -- a try. It doesn't matter if you can't understand the lyrics, the K-indie sound is awesome and I guarantee that you will enjoy every beat and catchy hook.
Since K-Pop is what's dominating the music charts for some years now, I was only exposed to K-indie after watching the Korean drama The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince. The Coffee Prince Soundtrack is peppered with the Korean indie sound and I like what I heard so I decided to learn more about the bands whose music were featured in the series.
If you're tired of K-Pop and are looking for hot new indie music, please read on.

My Quest for Korean Indie Music started with Coffee Prince
How I got into K-indie and a brief write-up about Korea's independent music scene.
The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince is my favorite Korean drama series and aside from the stellar acting and creative storyline, I love it even more because of its awesome soundtrack. It was through this OST that I discovered great K-indie acts like The Melody, Tearliner, Belle Epoque and Casker so I looked for more music from them. I also learned that they've all released albums under the Korean independent music label Pastel Music which was established in 2002 and described by The Korean Herald as a "prominent indie label". It was also awarded "Best Label" at the 2006 Korean Popular Music Awards.
Through Pastel Music's Myspace, I discovered other Korean indie bands Donawhale, Peppertones, Misty Blue, Humming Urban Stereo and many other K-indie acts.
Right now, Pastel Music is in the forefront of Korea's indie scene but according to Indieful ROK, there was a time when the top Korean indie label was Moonrise Records. I can't find any information about (seemingly defunct) Moonrise but it appears that the label was supportive to Pastel when it was just starting out. Several Moonrise artists signed with Pastel Music and even Moonrise Records founder K-indie act Sweetpea's latest album was released under Pastel.
This year, Pastel Music released a tribute album for Moonrise Records titled Homage to Moonrise, Pastel Music Presents. The compilation is available as a 3CD set and as a single CD. The single CD contains Moonrise covers by Pastel artists and the other two CDs in the set compile some of the finest Moonrise songs.
I am an avid alternative rock listener so if you ask me to compare K-indie with indie rock as we commonly know it, I would say that from what I've heard so far of Korean indie music, the songs have a happier, more sensitive and romantic vibe despite possessing the familiar low-fi sound of their Western counterparts. Even the melancholic songs sound more hopeful, a quality that must be an Asian sensibility.
The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince OST
Where I "discovered" Korean indie music
The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince is the K-drama that spawned my interest in Korean indie music. If you're considering getting into K-indie and are looking for a place to start, this is certainly it.

Listen to "Crazy" by The Melody
Find yourself entranced by this lively, catchy tune.
I first heard Korean indie rock band The Melody on The Coffee Prince' OST and was blown away by their bright & cheerful style. (Listen to the sugary-cute La La La It's Love to see what I mean).
When I listened to their self-titled album, I found more of the same infectious beats, whimsical instrumentations and soft vocals (courtesy of lead vocalist Taru). Crazy, below, is one of my favorite tracks from the album but I can honestly say that all songs in this album is worth listening to so it's a shame that they've disbanded.
* Crazy is a track from The Melody Vol.1.
Listen to "April Funk" by the Peppertones
A song you will find yourself relentlessly dancing to.
From the second this song starts, you will find yourself tapping along to the beat -- at the very least. See if you don't get up and dance! Irresistibly catchy and cheerful, listen to April Funk by Korean electronic / house duo Peppertones when you're feeling blue. I guarantee that you'll feel happier by the time the song is done three minutes later!
* April Funk is a track from the album Colorful Express.
Listen to "Morning Call" by Peter Pan Complex
An easy-listening tune you can relax and groove to.
Morning Call by South Korean rock band Peterpan Complex is one of those songs that can erase the days worries away. Just play the track, sit back and relax to the calming vocals and sweet, jazzy melody.
* Morning Call is a track from Peter Pan Complex Vol. 4 - Love
Listen to "Flowerpot" (Hwabun) by Loveholic
A soft and sweet haunting love song.
I first heard Flowerpot by Loveholic on the 2nd episode of Coffee Prince (it's on Coffee Prince's Unofficial Soundtrack) and I fell in love with the song instantly. The song is about unconditional love -- specifically about wanting to be a small flower pot on the lover's sill so she can feel his love even if they're far apart. How sad! I tear up a little whenever I listen to this song.
* Flowerpot is a track from Loveholic Vol. 3 - Nice Dream
Listen to "Coffee Smell" by Mojoharnic
A groovy, danceable track with a sweet melody.
Coffee Smell (what is it with Koreans and coffee?) by Korean indie / electronica group Mojoharnic is a happy, head-bobbing electronic dance track with soft, breathy vocals, a sweet melody and an infectious beat. Definitely a song to listen to if you need a Monday morning picker upper -- yup, it works just like coffee. Get up and dance, right now!
* Coffee Smell is a track from The Cat Return

Although k-pop is infectious and very entertaining, there is a point when you have to say enough. The generic beats and often autotuned voices cannot hold a candle to the often hauntingly beautiful, simplistic yet profound sounds produced by k-indie. K-indie is, overtly a genre where musicians, not idols, come to play and that makes all the difference. In essence, like the k-pop, love the k-indie.

Sometimes, the easiest way to discover a lot of great music is to buy a soundtrack or compilation CD. Dive straight into the K-indie scene with this 5-CD 5-year anniversary collection from Pastel Music, the label that houses most of Korea's indie musicians.
Founded in 2003, Pastel Music is Korea's leading indie recording label. Their music pushes for gentle, soothing melodies like the murmuring of the river or children's laughter resonating from a nearby playground.
Pastel Music 5th Anniversary - We Will Be Together celebrates the marching spirit and the musical accomplishment of the label over the last five years and brings together a collection of some of the best known Korean indie artists.
This compilation is comprised of five discs. The first CD comes under the theme of "We will be together: Pastel Season Edition" and contains 15 songs in total including a new track, Sweater (CD 1 - Track 2), which features the amazing vocal collaboration of Humming Urban Stereo and Taru. Known as the voice behind Naegen Sarang Hana... from the New Heart soundtrack, Taru is hailed by many as the next promising newcomer. Another new talent, Yozoh provides his debut solo in Harmonica Sori (CD 1 - Track 7). Other tracks to look out for are Regretto (CD 1 - Track 13) by Tearliner, the musical director of The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince soundtrack; Bogoshiperseo, Angoshiperseo, Manjigoshipersero (CD 1 - Track 5) by Low-end-Project, the enigmatic voice featured in The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince soundtrack; and Misty Blue's Hanjokbbameuro Wootneun Yeoja (CD 1 - Track 6).

Listen to "Stepping Out" by the Clazziquai Project
I don't think you will be able to resist dancing along to this song.
The Clazziquai Project is one of Korea's "best-known" indie bands and it's not fair to make a K-indie list without them. My husband loves this group whose music is described as a fusion of electronic music, acid jazz and house. They released their first (unofficial) albums online in 2001, capitalizing on netizens' word of mouth. They stayed in the underground scene until the release of their debut, Clazziquai Vol. 1 - Instant Pig, in 2004. They have become popular since then with their music gracing the soundtracks of TV commercials, K-dramas and movies. Listen to Stepping Out, a powerful bass-heavy track that you won't be able to resist dancing to -- this I guarantee.
Gear up for your party with albums by Clazziquai Project
A popular Korean indie fusion band
Clazziquai Project's music is a melange of electronic music, acid jazz and house so anything by them is a guaranteed hit on the dance floor. You can't ever go wrong with them so collect all their albums if you can.
BONUS: Listen to a live performance of "Yesterday" by Taru
A shiny, happy pop song.
I admit that Yesterday by Korean singer Taru sounds more K-Pop than K-Indie but I like the song and I thought she deserves a spot on this page since she's the former vocalist of (now defunct) indie group The Melody. Listen to a live performance of this shiny, happy song below.
R.A.I.N.B.O.W., Taru's solo mini-album
Mainstream K-pop with an electronic vibe.
I wanted to spotlight the self-titled album by The Melody here but it's not available on Amazon so I'm featuring lead vocalist Taru's first mini album R.A.I.N.B.O.W. instead. Her music in this album sounds more mainstream than her previous sound in The Melody but I still enjoyed it and I think it deserves a chance from you as well.
R.A.I.N.B.O.W.
Amazon Price: $19.47 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
R.A.I.N.B.O.W fills itself with the electrifying sounds of electronica and boasts a featured artist lineup that includes guitar pop band Swinging Popsicle and popular electronica band Sentimental Scenery. Taru has already built a formidable reputation for herself through her impeccable display of music craftsmanship as the vocalist of The Melody. This time, she branches out to lyric writing, adding personal touches to her songs as well as demonstrating her potential as an all-around musician. (Review from Yesasia)

Hongdae, the mecca of Seoul's Indie scene
Experience the K-indie scene right smack in its center.
Hongdae (short for Hongik University) is the center of Seoul's indie culture so if you ever find yourself in the land of kimchi, make sure to visit it. Stepping out of the subway into the street, you will get a feel of the indie scene right away. There are murals and graffiti on the walls, little shops that sell odd knick knacks, art galleries with funky exhibitions, flea markets, clubs, bars, a playground, and of course guerilla K-indie concerts every so often.
The following are photos that show Hongdae's indie culture from the Flickr community.
