Tol-Korean First Birthday Celebration

Ranked #6,515 in Holidays & Celebrations, #109,807 overall | Donates to Save the Children

I will bring your children from the east...

With the popularity of Korean adoptions, the centuries old traditional Korean Tol celebration is alive and well in the USA. (You will also see this occasion spelled "Dol" or "dol janchi") This first birthday of a Korean child is still celebrated as a time of congratulations for their parents and family. In Korean culture this milestone event is marked with the making and wearing of the Hanbok, the traditional dress worn during festivals and celebrations, and tables set with dozens of varying symbolic foods.

In the modern Tol, taking a picture of the child is an important part of the event. The photo is generally taken with the child seated and a Korean traditional screen used as the background. These photos can be taken in advance and used as the focus of the Tol invitation.

Steeped in custom and tradition, this birthday celebration continues to say "Saengil chukha hamnida". Happy Birthday.

Fun, handmade gift items with Korean flair

From this helpful article on Tol celebrations, "It's also traditional to bring gifts for the baby. The most traditional, and still given by grandparents, are baby rings and charm bracelets. Kate received a gold ring decorated with a pencil engraving and a red painted flower (for good luck) and a charm bracelet with bells and pigs (pigs symbolize wealth and good fortune)."
