Well, I've been living in my 'new' apartment for a year now, but it's only in the last few months that I've discovered that this patch of green next to a canal is the best place to go walking. I am, generally, more a biking girl, but the neighborhood doesn't have parks large enough to make that fun nearby.
Instead this smaller park is there - it is big enough for an hour walk and has all kinds of scenery in a small place.
A path to go
Water, boats and green
Like a lot of Dutch cities, Leiden has it's share of water. My walk at The Korte Vliet includes sights of many boats like this one, parked outside their owner's homes.
In case you're wondering, the tree with the red berries is called 'lijsterbes' in Dutch and European Rowan in English (says wikipedia). I was lucky to photograph it at it's best. Usually the berries are either absent or not that dark.
The Canal - De Korte Vliet
Poplar Trees (Populus fastigiata) are a very common tree in The Netherlands, especially next to waterways. They're usually planted in a line, just like these were. I love the sound they make when there's a bit of wind.
Don't picture it as too romantic - this IS the 21st century
And yes, that means that most dutch bridges have graffiti underneath. This is one of the better done specimens under one of the bridges on my walk.
Geese
I saw a lot of birds on my walk, but loved these geese the most
One goose at least will be keeping watch whenever you see a pack of geese.
Trees, trees and more trees
These pictures were all taken very near to each other.
One of the more scenic views
If you had to live in an apartment building, wouldn't this one be just lovely? What a great view!
A great place for biking, hiking, walking the dog and jogging
As I walked the round to take pictures for this lens, I saw many people. It was early Saturday morning in the middle of summer, but still people were up to walk their dogs or have their weekly jog. I saw several dads with kids. Perhaps mom was out shopping and dad took charge of the kids?
The Petting Zoo
One of the perks of this park: a petting zoo with sheep, goats and chickens.
So what do you think she's saying?
This toddler didn't say much the whole time I was taking pictures of her. She just sat on her bike - not yet trying out the peddles much. She did say 'bike' at one point. And she was clearly wondering what the heck I was doing there.
But what do YOU think she was thinking?
Okay, enough with the pictures me and this goat needs to get back to our conversation!

There's a playground too
This is just one of the best open playgrounds I've ever seen.
House with a green roof
Sometimes you take a camera with you and you see more than you would if you hadn't been taking pictures. I must have walked past this house half a dozen times at least, yet it never registered.
Clearly this house has one of the modern ecological green roofs. Literally green with foliage. The advantage of such roofs is that the rain water doesn't go straight into the sewer, which may get overloaded, but is filtered through the plants.
So where is this beautiful park of yours?
It's the Korte Vliet walk in Leiden, The Netherlands
Doesn't mean anything yet?
